170 council jobs face axe to cut costs
Saturday 17th October 2009, 10:57AM BST.
More than 170 jobs are set to be axed at Wolverhampton City Council by next March as part of a major cost-cutting drive, it emerged today. Walsall Council must also save up to £43 million in five years.
This would also raise fears of redundancies.
The revelations are the latest cuts by West Midland councils looking to save from budgets in order to keep council tax rises low.
Around 78 of the expected job losses at Wolverhampton Council will come from the adults and community department, which includes library, parks and cemetery staff, while the rest will come from across all other areas of the council.
The job losses are part of plans to cut £40 million from the budget by 2011, and are revealed in a report going to the Tory cabinet on Wednesday which says 111 staff have already taken voluntary redundancy this year.
Wolverhampton Council is going to launch a new voluntary redundancy scheme on Thursday, and has allocated £5.4 million to paying staff off.
Walsall Council, which says its cuts are designed to keep council tax rises to 4.5 per cent, is shedding 50 jobs, Cannock Chase District Council is letting 27 staff go, 10 are being axed at Sandwell Council and warnings of possible redundancies in Dudley by the spring.
Councillor Joan Stevenson said: “We are being open and honest about it, we are in a mess.”

Top Tip for Tory Candidates planning to stand for election in Wolverhampton.
Declare your hobbies and interests such as using your home as a brothel or recreational drug use before asking people to vote for you and thus avoid embarassing headlines in the paper.
You may even win more votes by being open and honest.

here we go again. last year many many workers had a massive pay out. could this be the reason for the cut backs?

I wonder what odds I would get from Ladbrooks that all these job loses will come from the “injuns” while the “chiefs” remain safe ?

And then there’s Axon to pay off from the Tories bungled attempts to transform the council. How many millions and job cuts will that cost?

If i remember rightly it was the woeful mismanagement by the Labour council over the last 10 years that has got us into this mess. Now the Tories have to make painful cuts to get us out – same as on a National scale.
I’m pretty sure Wolves Council are trying to minimise costs so there is NO rise in council tax next year. I welcome the fact the council are no longer treating taxpayers as a bottomless pit of funds to waste on their favoured projects.
That said, I still think cuts should be from the non-essential middle management jobs and from the weird Labour job creations of ‘inclusion officer’, ‘outreach worker’, ‘diversity coordinator’ and ‘personal fitness trainer’.
What a waste of money. Time is was cut back where not needed.

Lets also cut back on councillors expenses, most of them claim a fortune every week for travel, food and other expenses.
