Back to action for the Baggies
Friday 16th October 2009, 9:10AM BST.
Albion blogger Jarrod Hill takes a look at the Reading game as the Baggies regroup for action after a long international break.
As a number of our players come back from international duty, we take a look at this weekend’s game against Reading.
My congratulations go out to Marek Cech, as his national team Slovakia have booked their place at the World Cup in South Africa next year. We now wait to see if Cech will be joined by his club mates Chris Wood with New Zealand and Robert Koren for Slovenia through the play-off’s.
In fact we could have a whole host of players at next year’s competition with Gonzalo Jara also confirming his trip, as Chile have qualified from arguably the toughest groups of all in South America.
Onto tomorrow’s game, although Reading are not the team they were a couple of seasons ago, in recent years they have proved difficult opponents for us. This summer saw their squad stripped of their best players and it’s taken them until the last few league games to hit any form.
I am sure the players will be glad to be returning to the Hawthorns after trips to Barnsley and Preston and the fans will turn the volume to maximum, especially after being starved of club football for two weeks.
Not for the first time this season, our injury list is a concern heading into the game. I just can’t wait for the time when I can write a blog leading up to a game and not have to mention our walking wounded.
The good news is the continuing improvement of both Ishmael Miller and James Morrison, who will be like two new signings when ready for first team action. But the news that Chris Brunt, Luke Moore and Graham Dorrans are struggling with niggling injuries is just a continuation of our season so far.
For a number of weeks, I have hoped extra funding could be found to strengthen the squad via loan signings. Although the rumour mill has linked us to a number of defenders, like Gabriel Tamas and Sol Campbell, nothing looks like materialising until the January transfer window.
I still have a slight fear over our strikers and our capability to score enough goals to get out of this division, but then I comfort myself with the confidence that at least one of our midfielders will hit double figures – and my money is on Chris Brunt.
Winger Jerome Thomas is back available for tomorrow’s game and I hope he has not only learned a valuable lesson, but has also been re-energised by his enforced break. When the wide man is on his game I can see him becoming one of our greatest weapons this season, but maybe it’s because I am a self confessed fan of old school wing-play.
If only we could discover the next Laurie Cunningham, but in fact wingers seem to be re-emerging as key parts of many teams. After years of witnessing many sides devoid of width, it now seems managers are again focusing on playing two wide players.
The fact we now have strikers like Roman Bednar and Chris Wood available, who are both decent in the air, serves to feed my desire that we field wingers who can get quality balls into the box.
Tomorrow’s game also re-acquaints Simon Cox with the club who let him go – if he gets on the pitch- although strikers usually return to haunt their past clubs it seems it is a law that only relates to the Baggies in a negative way.
I can name countless former Albion players who have scored against us since leaving, but struggle to name many who have scored for us against their former clubs, with only Kanu springing to mind in recent years.
So lets hope Cox nets against the Royals, Mattock scores against Leicester, and Brunt notches one when we play Sheffield Wednesday!
But I will just settle for a win.

Good blog as ever. I think that you are alluding to the “thin” nature of our squad. The mind plays tricks and I have no stats to support what I am about to say but I am sure that during our last promotion campaign we had Philipps, Gera, Brunt and Morrison on the bench on a fairly regular basis. It was this strength in depth that saw us through. Plus players like Martis, a regular this season played twice I think. When the injuries and suspensions kick in (and in some ways they already have) I feel our overall squad may be no stronger than several other clubs.

I think it was Preston the other week which could not field their full compliment of substitutes against us due to a lack of bodies so whilst we could probably do with extra cover at full back and central defence especially if Olsen was to pick up a similar injury to last year we would be in trouble and I think RDM realises this. I suppose we have to be mindeful of the economic situation and large squads for all clubs may be temporarily a thing of the past. You mention Jarrod that fans are starved of football after yet another international break. We are only in mid October and this was the third break since the season started. Attendances are traditionally higher up till mid November when they decline in the run up to Christmas. These disruptions have taken place in the period when the weather is reasonable for fans and interest is at it’s highest level. I am suprised that SKY have not objected as I didn’t bother to watch one game last weekend on TV. There are too many qualifiers with too many teams without a prayer of qualifying being involved. The major teams should be seeded and the minnows should play against themselves so that one or two get a chance to qualify. If we did this qualifying matches could be played over a two week period at the end of the season and we the fans could get back to a proper season.

Our squad is paper thin and we lack quality in depth. If Olsson gets injured we are in alot of trouble, he is so good he holds a very poor back line together. Hopefully Zuiv will have rested his tired little legs now! What happened with Mogga’s transfer request in all went very quiet after that? Be glad to see Miller back lets hope the injury has not effected him as a player. If we cannot beat last seasons readings reserves we do not deserve anything. That said I am glad to be back at the Hawthorns, up the Baggies!

I cannot wait to get back to the Shrine tomorrow!!
After recent performances and results, as long as I’m walking back to the car after the match with us having gained 3 more points I really don’t mind!!

I can see Albion putting 4 past Reading tomorrow, apart from Chris Brunt RDM has a fully fit
squad to choose from,Iam expecting our line up
to look like this:
CARSON,ZUIVERLOON,MEITE,OLSSON,MATTOCK,
THOMAS,MULUMBU,DORRANS,CECH,BEDNAR,MOORE.
KIELY,BARNETT,MARTIS,KOREN,REID,WOOD,COX.
If people think our squad lacks depth then just
look at poor old Sheff Utd with about 12 players available.
I`d like to give a mention to Birmingham City,
its good to see them with a new owner and 40M
to spend in the January transfer window, but
even if they had 100M to spend it wouldnt make
any difference as they will be down before
christmas anyway.
BLUES will always be known as a Joke Club
who have never won anything apart from that
Laylen Daff trophy, and have a tin pot football
stadium which they try to make out is Premier
League.

Number5 DLB. You have made my point succinctly. Who of the outfield players on your bench for tomorrow, apart from Koren, would have got anywhere near the team in the last 2 seasons. And I don`t care about Sheff Utd, only the Baggies.

1 Paul.
When you start the season with three potential first teamers (Miller, Morrison and Clement) unable to play a game and a fair sprinkling of other injuries on top, any team would struggle. It’s difficult enough keeping quality players happy playing first team. football in the CCC, never mind if they’re not going to get a regular game. Look at the squad printed by 5 DLB, add the three I’ve mentioned plus Texeira and Jara and you have 23 players, just how big a squad do you think we should have? definitely not paper thin.
2 RB.
What a good post. Like you I didn’t watch any football last weekend, it was a dead weekend. Likewise I watched the England match in the week out of a sense of duty, I find it very hard these days to get any feeling of attachment to the England football team. Your ideas for reforming the qualification games are spot on.

In respect of Morrisons injury,I nderstand it all started with a “Blister” on his heal. How on earth did it get to this stage? He’s been out for yonk’s.A blister? who was looking after this guy?A blister? some bl99dy blister.I mean how many of us have had blisters after being in the garden all day,or even at work. This injury should never have got as bad as this.Somebody has a lot to answer for.Hope he’s back soon.

Good blog, superb comments from the cognoscenti. Many teams are feeling the pinch right now and as you may have noticed, the JP knockers have gone very quiet. We have a good fan base of around 20K to 25K, sell players for excellent money, (Ellington at Watford makes me want to add a ‘t’) and are looking at bringing in new signings. Very healthy. Oh, and there’s a match tomorrow in about 21 hours and 50 minutes. Not too bothered.
