Wolves not interested in Best

Tuesday 13th October 2009, 10:37AM BST.

leon bestWolves have scotched talk of any interest in Coventry’s £1.5million-rated striker Leon Best.

Best is out of contract in the summer and has started the season on fire with six goals for the Championship club. Reports haves suggested a bid from Molineux will arrive in January.

The story is the latest twist in striker links between the clubs, after Sam Vokes’s collapsed loan move and the protracted transfer of Freddy Eastwood to Ricoh Arena that has left relations strained at boardroom level.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said: “There’s nothing in it – I’m happy to say there’s no truth in this.

“Mick has always thought of Leon Best as a good player but we have bought Stefan Maierhofer and we still have Chris Iwelumo to come back from injury, so we have two players covering the role that player can play.

“Given the player’s contractual status, I would have thought he was more likely to allow his contract to run out and become a free agent.”

In the Wolves camp, Maierhofer claims Wolves’ training regime is “brutal” after claiming could have had his leg broken.

He said: “People get stuck into you in brutal fashion during training. I need to wear shinpads all the time, otherwise I would have had my leg broken by now.

“The challenges are different to what I’m used to. We have a 35-man squad and everyone wants to get into the team.”

Must say its a shame, went to the Ireland vs Italy game on Saturday and for a big lad he moves very quickly and won everything in the air for the 20 mins he was on, looked a real lively player.

For 1.5m too would be a snip.

As for the Hoff, well having watched him in a few games now, its no suprise to have it confirmed…..he is a big girl!! For such a tall lad he wins nothing and looks as easy to push off the ball as Matt Jarvis is!

It’s encouraging our training regime includes trying to break one anothers legs, or is it more likely the HOFF is a little off the pace, a little cumbersome in his control and lacks any presence of a man so large! I wonder? One final thought, the full backs please, please, please replace Elokobi the guys out of his depth move mancienne accross and bring back Jody. I love Elokobi’s effort but he’s not ready or good enough yet! and stop playing halford yes he’s got a long throw but who’s attacking it, no one unless he runs after it and has ago himself the majority of our attacking players are below 6ft thats why it doesn’t work! Up the Wolves we will survive

Thank god for that.We need players who have premiership experience.Apart from Stoke and Burnley we have the lowest wage bill in the premiership. So much for Moxey’s and Morgan’s talk that we were going to compete .

It is a well known and widely accepted fact that in any organisation the training MUST at least parallel if not exceed the conditions likely to be found in the job.

So take the knocks and get on with it Stefan.

The rest of the team are probably working on that old English theory that the bigger they are the harder they fall!

I wish the team were as brutal on the pitch as they are in trainning!!! We need to battle for the next 30 matches to survive in this league.

    Another striker???

    What a load of tosh!

We need defenders! Our defence is the problem!

If the defence is more solid we’d concede fewer goals and therefore lose fewer games!

The rumour about Leon Best is a bit of a joke. We have Doyle, Ebanks Blake, Iwelumo, Keogh, Vokes, The Hoff that are all better than him. He would be worth a punt in the championship but not above. The Hoff just needs to adjust. I am looking forward to a 5 man midfield v everton with Milijas as the attacking midfielder, with Doyle up top on his own. See how the game goes as we have options.

I agree that this is good news. He is a good player but if we were to spend money in jan it should be on more prem experience. Campbell may have made a bad choice pre season but i think he could do a job for us and bring on our defence’s experience. we should splash the cash so that players like duff or alan smith will be tempted to join us and cement our place in the prem. Up the wolves.

I happen to think that Wolves could well be in the market for him at the end of the season, if the price is right.

“Given the player’s contractual status, I would have thought he was more likely to allow his contract to run out and become a free agent.”

Jez has obviously gone to the trouble of finding out Best’s contract situation. A simple “no thanks” covers it usually. Whether we need him of course is a different matter altogether.

‘Wolves not interested in Best’. Let us hope they are also not interested in second best, which tends to have been the problem with most of the signings in the summer.

Best is a free agent in the summer so he would be a free. I would start with Doyle and Ebanks on Saturday!

What a pointless comment for the E&S to involve from maierhoffer, is it just trying to bring criticism to a player new to this league or to the manager and his coaching staff, either is unhelpful!
Up the wolves, positive thinking! ;-)

    13) I hope you are joking Steve? A workhouse for England that does all the work to enable Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard etc to benefit but how would that work for Wolves?
We reallistically can only play one forward to most away games and then two at home, so we have enough. The defence needs strengthening in the transfer window with another midfielder. Then we will be ok.
Those of you slating Sylvan yesterday and previously Zubar and Milijas need to be patient.
We are still not in the worst three teams in this league!

Not good enough by the 3Ms. We buy all these forwards we can afford when we should be going massively into debt to build our future. I cannot for the life of me understand why we don’t buy Sol Campbell and Didi Hamaan and now Heskey is available! Get them in now and invest for the future, I say!
