Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

The top-flight’s most prolific crosser

Wolves correspondent Tim Nash brings you the Molineux man top of the charts for balls into the box this season.
Who has produced the most crosses in the Premier League this season?
Ashley Young? Theo Walcott? Aaron Lennon? Maybe Shaun Wright-Phillips, James Milner or evergreen Ryan Giggs?
Try Wolves winger Matt Jarvis. At an impressive 80 crosses, the 23-year-old Premier League newcomer has chiselled out more centres than any other player in the first eight games of the top flight this season.
It might be an impressive statistic, but Jarvis admits it could be misleading – after all, the record doesn’t show how many crosses actually went to a Wolves player.
The wide man himself admits his form is ‘work in progress,’ and therefore it’s no surprise to learn that the former Gillingham man is looking to increase the quality and not just the quantity of balls into the box.
He said: “It’s nice to be top of the list and be recognised for it. It shows I’m getting in the positions to get crosses in, but also that I’m getting the ball and providing chances for strikers and midfield runners.
“Of course it can be misleading – out of the 80 crosses, only 10 might have been any good. That’s what I’ve spoken about to the gaffer and TC (assistant manager Terry Connor) and that’s what I need to improve on.
“I need to make sure 60 out of any 80 I put in get to our men – it’s all about the quality of the crosses. There’s no point me putting in rubbish crosses, I need to make sure it’s a good delivery we can score from.
“I just have to get it into the right areas – whether that means beating the first man depends on who’s in the box.”
Jarvis admits creating opportunities is the biggest part of his game, and believes he is becoming more versatile by being able to beat his full-back on either side and whip balls in.
He said: “I need to be providing chances for people to score – that’s really what wide men are for, that’s my role in the team.
“One of the good things I’ve got is the ability to use both feet which means if I can’t get down the line, I can cut inside and cross with my right foot.
“I’m out practising with both feet all the time – that’s one of the things I still need to improve, it’s a ‘work in progress!’
“It’s frustrating for everyone when the cross hits the first man – the strikers may have made three or four runs to get in front of their man, so the forwards, myself and the gaffer are all frustrated.
“It’s something I have to keep practising to make sure I get a higher percentage to our men.
Jarvis hopes the return of fellow winger Michael Kightly can make his crosses even more dangerous, as the England under-21 international has an impressive scoring record.
He said: “Michael Kightly’s goalscoring record is fantastic – he’s good at popping up in situations like that when the ball’s crossed in from the other side.
“Dave Edwards has already scored and at 6ft 4ins tall, Greg Halford has the size to get in at the back stick, so there’s plenty to aim at.”
But if there’s one massive difference Jarvis has noticed, it’s the quality between the Premier League and the Championship.
He said: “Every player in the Premier League is an athlete and they’re all super-strong. The big difference I’ve noticed is the quality of the players, for instance their final ball.
“We can be on top for the whole game, but we’ve been punished for something from one chance they get.
“So the end product is a lot better than in the Championship.”
While keen to improve the quality of his crossing, Jarvis is also looking to become more dangerous in front of goal to improve on his modest record of four goals in 62 League games for Wolves.
He said: “As well as all my crossing and my setpieces, I’ve been practising my shooting with ‘TC.’ I’ve also got to have shots myself and get on the end of someone else’s cross from the other side.
“I’m trying to add another string to my bow as it were with the goalscoring. I’m trying to get more shots off but these damn keepers keep getting in the way!
“I’d love to score more goals – I’m sure everyone would – I just need to keep getting myself in those positions to create myself goalscoring opportunities and not allow my main duty of creating chances dip.”
But Jarvis is pleased with his contribution so far.
He added: “It’s gone well – I think I was third in the list for creating chances so hopefully that shows I’m getting in the right positions to create chances for other people.
“Hopefully that continues and we create more chances and score more goals.”
