Ikeme could be out for Murray

Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme signed a contract extension until the summer of 2012 on Wednesday.

Wolves are ready to send keeper Carl Ikeme out on loan – leaving Matt Murray to remain at Molineux and challenge for the No. 1 spot when fully-fit.

Murray has been back in full training for a week after 11 months out with a ruptured patella tendon. But the 28-year-old one-time England hopeful is edging closer to full fitness and manager Mick McCarthy wants to keep him at Molineux to assess him rather than send him elsewhere for first-team football.

McCarthy’s stance is an indication of the huge est-eem Murray is still held in at Molineux, even allowing for a goalkeeping department top-heavy with talent – and a warning of impending fur-ther competition for Wayne Hennessey and Marcus Hahnemann.

“I would probably treat Murray with kid gloves first and foremost, play him in two or three reserve games and allow Carl Ikeme to go out on loan,” said boss McCarthy.

“I would use Matt to join in training here and be around the squad.

“If we had four fit keepers, I’d let Carl go out on loan and get some football. He’d be the first one out.

“But I have not really considered what to do or given it a great deal of thought yet.”

Quality

McCarthy stressed it was still early days for Murray, especially given the keeper’s history of long-term injury, but the 2006-07 Player of the Year has lifted the whole training ground.

“He’s doing his level best to get back,” added the boss.

“I don’t think he’s anywhere near a game yet, but he’s joining in with training.

“We’re taking shots at him and he’s taking crosses and shots, so he’s making real progress. It’s great for Matt, first and foremost.

“It doesn’t matter how much running and weights you do, you want to get back playing football, which for him is catching crosses and diving, getting at people’s feet and blocking things.

“It’s great for him. It gives everyone a lift.”

Murray was injured on loan at Hereford as he battled back from a reconstructed cruciate knee ligament and last played for Wolves in May 2007.

Meanwhile, reports today linked Italian side Palermo with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.

The Serie A side are tracking the striker, who has just returned from injury.

Memo to Ebanks-blake….Grab any Palomo offer with both hands…There is no future for you at Wolves now that Doyle has arrived, and unless Wolves return to the Championship next season, you are really too slow for the Premiership, lets be fair.
Sylvan, you were great last season running with Big Chris in the Championship, its doubtful Chris will ever return to the form of last season after the injury, so I think its time to move on to a club geared to your unique style of play.

Make no mistake, Mick will go to sign another forward to run with Doyle in January, and your future here will now be always off the bench.

Good luck Sylvan for the future.

mm said,,,,It’s great for Matt, first and foremost i think its great for wolves that matt is back training,i really hope he can put the injuries behind him this time as he is deffo the best keeper we have got, henno can become the best keeper at wolves but not until he learns to command his box like matt,,,WE ARE WOLVES

is it just me that thinks a fully fit Carl Ikeme is a better keeper that Hennessey? I thought he commanded his box well and is a great shot stopper.

Mike, are you on something? SEB’s just got back from injury, and it’s important to have competition for places. Get a grip.

memo to Matt ;take it easy no deadlines, one day at a time. At 28 you have got plenty of time for a keeper to have a good career.Your time will come.

Bit harsh on Ikeme i feel but it’ll do him good to get out and play first team football as he is good enough. Murray is a great keeper, but the fact he’s never fit i think will limit his chances at us.

    idiotic comment # 1.

SEB has not been fit yet. Let’s give him 3/4 games being fit to make judgement. He needs some good delivery INTO the box…then he’ll make good. He does need a big man to create some mayhem and knock balls down…so does Doyle.

SEB has been out injured and is still getting back into it but I think he is really lacking confidence. That sitter he missed against pompey wouldn’t have helped him either. If Keogh had missed that most fans would be on his back.

Against Everton, play it steady and look to pinch it in the last 20mins:

    Hahnemann
    Mancienne (LB)
    Zubar
    Berra
    Stearman/Foley (RB)
    Kightly
    Castillo
    Surman/then bring on the Hoff
    Henry/then bring on Edwards
    Milijas just behind the striker(s)
    Doyle

    1. I would not sell Sylvan unless it was for 9mil plus a huge sell-on-clause he’s not even fit yet! He’s a natural goalscorer and they are very hard to find.

Matt Murray is a great keeper but Mick is being spot on with the way he is treating him. I am looking forward to the day that big Matt starts again for the wolves, a legend. Best english keeprr in the premier league.

With regards to Everton I think we need to get tight and use our pace down the flanks with Milijas being the play maker:

    Hennessey
    Stearman / Foley
    Zubar
    Craddock
    Mancienne
    Kightly
    Castillo
    Henry
    Surman
    Milijas
    Doyle

11 – if it’s pace you want why omit Jarvis?, I’ll just wait until I walk into the paddock & see who’s playing rather than try to read MM’s mind over team selection
