Change is needed for Wolves

Friday 9th October 2009, 9:15AM BST.

pompey4Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd believes change is needed in the team to stand any chance in the return to action after the international break.

It was a full seven minutes into the second-half of the Portsmouth game before Michael Kightly finally kicked a ball and an ironic cheer went up from the South Bank.

What was our boss Mick McCarthy thinking last Saturday? A half-fit Kevin Foley starting at right-back and a pedestrian pace Greg Halford on the wing?

Sorry Mick, but ‘Kites’ should have been on from the start, terrorising the Portsmouth back-line, not chasing the game in the second-half.

We didn’t deserve much, if anything from the game.  Even given the blind ref and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake missing a chance he would bury in his sleep, Wolves were simply not at the races.

Our seven point haul is only two points better than the first eight games from our woeful efforts in the Premiership this time six years ago.

Back in 2003 we were getting battered week in, week out and shipping in a boatful of goals.  We were rock bottom at this point in the season and fearing the absolute worst.

This time around it’s only marginally better and we are only out of the bottom three on goal difference. But surely this time around we have learned our lesson from that fateful season and have a better and deeper squad?

Perhaps the talk about this so-called ‘easy start’ to the season has just heaped too much pressure on to the shoulders of young players, who will have already been feeling the heat as it is.

Whereas in the 2003–2004 season, particularly in the first-half of the campaign, we were outclassed and outplayed in the majority of games, this time around we seem to be holding our own.

For me, there have only been a couple of occasions where Wolves have been really poor this season – away at Blackburn and last Saturday’s lacklustre effort against Portsmouth.

As I pointed out in last week’s blog, I am sure none of us want to look back at the end of a season where we have been relegated and say that at least we held our own in the majority of the games?

I’m sure we would wholeheartedly agree with Mick that our points total isn’t good enough at this stage of the season.

Mick needs to start with his best 11 at Everton and not stay loyal to players who simply are not up to the standard we need for this league.

By the time the game at Goodison Park comes around, we should have nearly a full compliment of fit players to choose from.

The noises coming from the club is that Ronald Zubar is finally ready to make his first-team debut.  When I saw him pre-season I was very impressed at his tackling, athleticism and reading of the game.

I would like to see him come into the middle of defence and I would push Michael Mancienne out into the left-back slot to replace George Elokobi.

Sorry to say it, but I’ve seen milk turn quicker than George on Saturday. He had an absolutely dreadful game and I think he needs to come out of the side and work on his fitness and distribution.

We need goals. With Ebanks-Blake approaching full fitness, he needs to be a starter against the Toffees. Where does that leave Andy Keogh though?  If you had asked me that question last season, I would have quite happily been an advocate of dropping Andy from the starting eleven.

But, Saturday’s performance apart, Andy has been one of our best players so far this season.

Keogh isn’t a natural goalscorer; he is a creative forward, whatever that means and – if we had the personnel to do it – I would love to see him playing just behind the front two. That’s never likely to happen though, we would simply get destroyed and over-run in the midfield.

In a strange way, the pressure is off the Wolves players for the next tricky five fixtures and that might work to our advantage.

No one really expects us to get much from Everton, Villa, Stoke, Arsenal and Chelsea. But I think there are some points to be had there, especially given the quality of performances we have put in against Fulham and Wigan.

Enjoy the international break and I’ll see you next week.

Interesting blog. (Also a good one, but ‘good’ doesn’t always equal ‘interesting’.) I think the views expressed mirror the assements of a majority of Wolves’ supporters at the moment:
    (1) The back-four – and the team’s defensive play – needs strengthening. The obvious solution is probably to make a change at left-back (Mancienne to replace Elokobi). But then, what about central defence? Agree that Zubar should get his chance, but partnered by Berra (in-form, but unexperienced at this level) or Craddock (if fit, brings experience and aerial strength)? Right-back: Might as well play Halford, as both Foley and Stearman seem to be half-fit/injured ATM.
    (2) More goals needed. Doyle can’t do the job all by himself. I don’t think the problem – or indeed solution – necessarily is who to play alongside him up front, but equally important: Create a balanced midfield including one or two players who can also feed the forward(s) (Milijas, Castillo?), and maybe even score a goal or two (Kites, Milijas). Simple?

Before I get shot down in flames, I am a Wolves fan through and through and go to most away games and season ticket holder at home.

The problem is we are leaking goals, really sloppy ones. I agree we have played well at times but our start was very kind with fixtures. We can play great stuff at times without putting the ball in the net and the problem we have is the defence doesnt hold up even against Hull and Portsmouth at home. We have to score 2 or 3 goals, or 6 at Sunderland, to get a win. Mick needs to get the defensive midfielders and defenders sorted out. Mancienne is a weak link at the moment, id try moving him to left back and play someone else in the middle. George is crud at this level.

I am trying to be positive and was very optimistic before we kicked a ball this season but the defending is at times a complete shambles. Its ok people saying we played well at Sunderland but think about it………we had to score 6 goals to win that game! Now the fixtures are getting tougher I just hope we arn’t completely trashed before we can sort the defence out.

I hope im wrong but in my opinion the defending is not good enough to keep us in this league.

A VIMTO FOR THE RIGHT SIDE … cheers for the blog nathan , woke up as usual thinking about the wolves . always nice to read likeminded thoughts . im 44 nearly , ive always been loyal wolves . i go to nearly every game and have done for years . i was lucky to have the luxury of richards hibbet era , and the going to games where we always seem to win , beating arsenal by 4 , united 3 1 , with our our fourth dissallowed … and then a lifetime of this trying to get back thing . Weve got some good young players this time, but for what ever reason we ve failed to sign experience . so all of a sudden confidence is low . any player will tell you that confidence is about 60% of ability . who remembers when we turned the corner at the bottom of the old fourth division . When we expected nothing . i used to sit in right side back then . who remembers that ? WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU FROM ? we re from wully vi hamperton . and when the ball went forward , we used to get to our feet and shout charrrge ! It was a laugh , but do you know what , the attude of just a couple of hundred of us , started to spread through the support and then we all witnessed that thing reaching the players and we found ourselves on our feet more often . this is whats happened at stoke . Lower expectations but more support and more encouragement . i know a lot of those fans are still at the wolves cos i still bump into some of them . the team selection is out of our hands but the true support isnt !!

I am very concerned at the next few games. We should definitely have beaten Hull, should not be losing to Pompey and we were very unlucky at Sunderland. The good news is that Blues are not doing much either and West Ham too.
On the point of Mancienne he is NOT a left back. Go on the Chelsea site or Wikipedia and it clearly states a right back ie if we put him there he would have to a Jarvis – be on his unnatural side!
We must bring Zubar in now. Saw him against Swindon and was the pick of the back four.

You took the words right out of my mouth!
This seemed to be the general opinion after last week’s game. Let’s see what Zubar can do.
And Halford needs to produce more than a long throw-in!
I’ve said it before, Keogh starts on the bench for me but comes on when we are a goal or two up so as to disrupt the opponents play. Ideally the job of a forward is to score goals, but unfortunately he doesn’t do it enough, despite having the chances. But I’d still have in in my first team plans.

I have to disagree with your Keogh comment. Sure he needs to be more effective in front of goal, but he does create chances for others and he has been instrumental in helping us win the few games we have done so far.

Agree – Zubar has to come in for Mancienne – we need someone to attack the ball, head it out and kick it out when necessary. And we have to get some creativity in midfield without losing the physical battle – that’s the real difficult part – I think we have to switch to 4-3-3 to achieve that. I think Jarvis has flattered to deceive so far – he has failed to get behind defences all season – so he’s on the bench for me,
    Here’s my team for Everton:

Why does he persist in sticking by the side of the likes of Keogh, Henry, Ward etc… Players not good enough at this level.

Come January, Wolves will be rock bottom and Steve Morgan will need to think seriously about getting in a new manager ready to spend January’ budget for the window.

mick is faced with a very difficult dilemna. We need a strong central midfield pairing as was shown by the improvement when castillo came into the side. However we also need some creativity. If he were to bring in milijas (who clearly can’t play in a 442!) he would need to go with 1 up front in a 433/451 formation. He’d then be slated for leaving out SEB! If he goes 442 and plays SEB and doyle up top there’s no creativity in the middle. it would be in character for mick to play milijas out of position on the left in a 442. (probably with mancienne out of position behind him!) Thats what my money would be on! Who’d be a manager eh!

Mancienne is a class act. He’s young yes but has suffered because he’s covering all over the place for Berra who’s pulled out of position covering for George. Don’t forget Mancienne made three fantastic blocks against a second half pressing Fulham while Berra was still on his backside. Although Berra has done well, he’s no real pace and gives away needless free kicks a bit like Collins. I’d play Zubar in centre as that’s what he is, alongside Mancienne. Now there is pace for you. Too much has been expected of poor George who needs to be rested and gather some composure. I wouldn’t be afaid to bring back Hill as he’s not that bad but we do need a quality left back.
Castillo has to play protecting the back four and I would put Milijas alongide to feed the wings. Keogh has to go down to the bench. He does make some intellegent runs, sometimes daft runs though and his pace drags defenders away but he’ll never be a consistent goal scorer and goals win games don’t they! Doyle is pretty much able to do what Keogh does only 10 times better. Seb will be the goal scorer we know him to be with the right partnership and service.

Disagree about dropping Elokobi. He rarely gets beaten on the wing and most of the sloppy goals given away are from set pieces or crosses coming in that should have been contained by midfield and then are ultimately not dealt with by Berra and Mancienne.

We need changes for our match on Saturday, and if I were Manager for that one day to give Wolves some hope of saving the game, my team would be as follows..

    milijas
    Henry
    Edwards
    Kightly
    Ebanks-blake
    Iwolomo

    Subs from:

    Doyle
    Keogh
    Hennersey

Far too many of our players are either unfit, or incapable of withstanding 90 minutes in the Premier division.
    In our game against Portsmouth….
Elokobi ( too slow and unfit )
Mancienne ( lost form and motivation, can’t cope )
    Ebanks-blake ( unfit/overweight )
Kightly ( unfit- lost confidence )
Doyle ( not 100% fit- can only play 45 min )
Milijas ( Too fast for his style of play )
Hennersey ( lost confidence mot the keeper he was )

One of the few players who is fit, keen and runs all day is Keogh, and he is out classed
and we won’t even give sam Volkes a run !!!

    Please explain Mr Mccarthy….

    Wolves ay we…

I am entitled to my opinion, I hear what your saying but i just dont think he is any better than what we have already got…

Now you will probably start shouting and screaming at me for this… I thnk that we should try and sign Sol Campbell… because i believe with all my heart that mancienne would learn loads off him… his positional play is terrible…
