Iwelumo set for reserve run out
Tuesday 6th October 2009, 9:19AM BST.
Wolves striker Chris Iwelumo will get another chance to step up his match fitness with an outing in the reserve derby against Villa.
The Scotland international made his comeback from a broken bone in his foot in a 1-0 second string against Chelsea a week ago.
McCarthy cautioned against the 31-year-old appearing at Everton when Wolves resume Premier League action a week on Saturday, after just 65 minutes’ football since damaging knee ligaments in April.
But boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed Iwelumo will play at at Villa Park tomorrow (7pm).
The manager said: “Chris is training OK, but he’s not right yet and I’m not sure if he’ll be ready for Everton.
“It’s just game time he needs now – that’s what the others have had.
“Before playing half a game last week he’s only played 20 minutes’ football in six months.”
Stephen Ward and David Jones remain the only long-term casualties with knee injuries.
McCarthy said: “Stephen is nowhere near playing- he’s probably still three months away. He’s mobile, but his knee is in a brace. He keeps as positive as he possibly can, but he’s nowhere near playing.
“Dave’s probably the same as Wardy.”
