Louise Smarting over road hogs

Sunday 4th October 2009, 10:29AM BST.

WD3440702@SMART 1 TT 02Driver Louise Yates is considering selling her small car – because she is fed up with road hogs pushing her off the road.

She today branded motorists on West Midlands roads “bullies” and said she only experiences problems when she is driving her diminutive vehicle.

Louise, aged 27, from Wolverhampton, loves her Smart Pure because it is so economical, easy to drive and zippy around town.

But she is incensed at the way that road hogs constantly carve her up because of the small size of the diminutive two-seater.

She says drivers of small cars are treated differently to those of larger vehicles and said she decided to speak out to highlight the problem. Louise, who lives off Willenhall Road with her husband Steve, said: “My problem is not with the car, which is great.

“My problem is with the many foolish people I come across. Motorists carve me up at every opportunity, push me out of filter lanes and drive right up against my rear bumper.”

Louise, aged 27, says she does not like to drive in an aggressive manner, which might lessen the problem.

“It’s not just drivers in Wolverhampton. I cover a lot of miles because of my job as a sign language interpreter and it’s the same everywhere.” She and her husband use his larger Vauxhall instead when they go out – even though it is less economical.

“I have nephews and nieces but am too scared to take them in the car in case something happens.”

Louise reckons the problem is caused solely by the size of the Smart, the smallest mainstream car on the market today.

“My husband used to have a BMW X5 and I never had any problems with other motorists when I drove that.”

She is now thinking of trading in her 2002 two-seater in exchange for a slightly larger car like a Citroen C1 or Peugeot 107.
