Council pledge on homes firm

Friday 2nd October 2009, 11:30AM BST.

A major review of the work done by Wolverhampton Homes was promised today.

City council leader Neville Patten gave the pledge in reply to a letter from frustrated tenants living in flats.

They were demanding major changes in the way they are dealt with by the organisation that manages housing stock for the local authority. The current agreement between Wolverhampton Homes and the council will be looked at again as the 10-year deal reaches the halfway stage.

Around 22,000 people are tenants of Wolverhampton Homes in the city.

Councillor Patten said: “Wolverhampton Homes does a lot of good work but we feel there are things that need to be looked at.”

Ann Guest, from the Spring Vale Estate in Park Village, wrote the letter on behalf of tenants.

She said: “Tenants have been cut out of the decision-making process by Wolverhampton Homes and feel let down and ignored.” She added: “The Flatted Estates Forum and the South West Area Forum have not met for over six months. There is no sign of the special interest groups that are meant to replace them.”

But Margaret Wright, director of performance and customer services for Wolverhampton Homes, said the claims did not match the evidence. “The result of last year’s survey showed 64 per cent of tenants believe we listen to their complaints while only 14 per cent did not.”

She said the forums would be replaced with informal get-togethers.
