An historic 18th century mansion in Staffordshire could be turned into a hotel or spa complex after it goes under the hammer at an auction next week.
Packington Hall, near Lichfield, which in recent years has been an office and industrial complex, will be put up for offers at the Bigwood auction sales on Tuesday in Villa Park’s Holte Suite, with bids set to start at around £600,000. Interest has been expressed in the listed building, with some developers looking to turn it into an hotel or spa complex.
The property, two miles from Lichfield, stands in a rural setting and was designed by architect James Wyatt n 1776.
It incorporates a detached house and six industrial units in its six acres.
Packington Hall was sold to the Bowden cable manufacturing company CTP Gills Ltd. The company occupied the house in the 1940s when its factory in Birmingham was bombed.
CTP Gills was sold in 2006 to Suprajit, an Indian engineering firm.
Bigwood director Ian Tudor said: “Packington Hall has had strong historic links with many of Staffordshire’s leading families over the centuries.
“It has been an industrial site since the 1940s and continued as such until 2007 – when CTP Gills Ltd moved to a smaller factory in Tamworth.
“The lot offers 64,420 sq ft in the factory to the rear of the house – the mansion and later additions comprise 12,580 sq ft. In addition there is a three-bedroom detached house.
“The guide price of £600,000 reflects the fact that repair and refurbishment is required. However, the mansion, part of which is listed, and the rest of the site are suitable for redevelopment.”
