Barnsley v Albion – fan’s view

Wednesday 30th September 2009, 11:11AM BST.

No effort, simple as that. You cannot doubt that our squad has more quality than most teams in this division but what we have lacked in our last two league games is pure fight and determination, writes Jarrod Hill.

I can forgive a player for having a bad game, but in a time of inflated wages (and egos) I cannot tolerate a player not giving 100%. Last night I witnessed too many players not giving their all and heads fell far too soon for my liking. At a time when we are missing a number of our better players I had hoped the players currently holding the shirt would fight tooth and nail to hold onto it.

Possibly the most worrying aspect of the last two games is that we are not creating chances; the first 45 minutes witnessed one half chance hit by Dorrans and Zuiverloon produced the worst individual performance of the season, by far.

Yes I am frustrated, up until the last two games we had had a fantastic start to the season and I am worried that the previous wins have papered over the cracks of our problems, cracks that are now glaringly obvious.

The fact we are consistently playing players out of position is baffling, I cannot understand why the left footed Brunt keeps being deployed on the right and not even switched when things are not working and even stranger is his insistence on playing Reuben Reid as a midfielder.

Barnsley beat us through sheer effort; Crystal Palace beat us through sheer determination and resilience, two important lessons that need to be heeded quickly by our boys, our quality will get us so far, but we need to earn the right to play our football.

After Saturday¹s disappointment I hoped the boys would come out and prove a point, but they looked more like sulky prima donnas than players with wounded pride.

One thing I would point out as one of our problems is our discipline; we have already clocked up 23 yellow cards and two red cards after just eleven league games. Not only may it cost us (and it could be argued it already has) in suspensions, I also believe it highlights a lack of mental discipline within the squad regarding player¹s individual duties.

Maybe I am being overly critical, maybe I shouldn¹t look too far beyond the fact we are still in the top two, but I can only tell it as I see it. Roberto Di Matteo is still getting to know his squad and hopefully things will improve quickly because in the Championship the games come thick and fast.

I was at the Barnsley game and you’ve summed everything up perfectly. Those players should be ashamed of themselves. If they do not want to wear the shirt, then they should give it to someone who does.Has for getting paid, they should all donate this months wages to Sir Bobby Robsons charity.Wages should be earned, not just handed out because it says so in the players contract. If a normal worker turns to work with the attitude our players have, they would be sacked. You could tell we was going to lose last night as soon has they walked on the pitch. That in itself is frightening.

Can not agree more. Playing players out of position has totally baffled me.
Not only Brunt, but Koren is an attacking central midfield player (AMF), always when he is asked to play out wide he struggles. So choose, either Dorrans or Koren in the AMF. Jara plays centre half for his country, so far he has played left back, out wide, and defensive midfield, while Martis is blantantly the weak link. Put him in the centre of defence alongside Olson.
Woods and Bednar can not play together, they are far too similar. If Moore is out, then give Cox or Reid a run in the team, playing off Bednar or Woods.
Hopefully the last two games are just a blip, but a third straight defeat at Preston will definately start the alarm bells ringing.

Spot on comment, Papering over the cracks !!!
We might be second in the league but we have gone backwards in playing ability from 2 seasons ago.Gera,Phillips and up to now Greening have been replaced by inferior players. I am not knocking Mulumbo or Dorrans but they are young inexperienced players who cannot be expected to be consistent every week like Greening was.Two seasons ago Martis could not get onto the bench and now he is first choice. The injuries keep cropping up on a very regular basis just like last year but under a new fitness coach !!
We lack quality experienced players but as ever they cost money and we cannot have Jeremy dipping into the 7.5 million profit on the close season transfer dealings(ok so the majority of it is coming next June from Robbo & Greening)but dare I suggest he dips into the 11 million parachute money.

Spot on. The worrying thing is every Albion fan has known for 2 years that we lack that fighting quality and have huge defensive frailties.
Our Director of Football must be brought to task for the “amazing” signings just take Reid and Cox, sheer quality these.

Jarrod, what was your view on the tackle on Bednar that got just a yellow card? The commentators and some newspapers thought it should have been a straight red. Poor referee for letting it pass but I also blame the Barnsley manager for winding them up that high. Can’t argue with the blog though, Bomber Brown and Ross told it the same.

The news that Mulumbu is now injured and out for a few weeks surely means RDM will now dip into the loan market, and quickly???!!!

I am going to suggest Gary McSheffery on loan form Blues, can play up front or out wide.

After the last 3 results I have heard that the Spag Bol, Lasagne, Rissotto and every Pizza have been taken off the shelves at Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl’s in West Bromwich.
I think that is taking things too far don’t you Terry!!!!!!!
