X Factor’s Treyc a model student
Tuesday 29th September 2009, 11:30AM BST.
Student Treyc Cohen already had the X Factor long before she made it to the last 24 of the TV talent show, her music tutor has revealed.
The Staffordshire 25-year-old was this week due to join her friends in her second year as a performing arts student at the University of Wolverhampton’s Walsall campus, in Gorway Road.
But for now her lecturers and fellow students are keeping their fingers crossed that the talent she has shown so far on her Popular Music degree course will hold her in good stead this weekend when the battle for the final shifts up a gear.
Today her course leader for Popular Music Steve Cooper revealed Treyc’s potential star quality had already been more than evident with her powerful vocals and bubbly personality.
And he revealed he had no idea she was planning to audition for mogul Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue until she got through the first round of try-outs in the summer college break.
Treyc, from Tamworth, is no stranger to tough auditions and critique as the aspiring pop star had to perform on stage as part of the application process before she was even accepted for the course at the School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure last year.
“I have taught Treyc in a couple of different modules,” said Steve.
“She is quite an interesting person to work with because she came to us as a mature student without any formal music qualifications. When she auditioned for us she clearly had a fabulous personality, great technical skill in her vocals and part of her desire was to do the degree course and broaden her skills.
“She was with us last year and did really great and it’s no surprise to us that she’s doing well on X Factor.
“We’ll have to wait and see how it will pan out for her. She was due to start with us this term and we’re looking forward to having her back depending on the results of the show.
“If things do take off for her on the show then we can allow her to take a 12-month leave of absence. She comes across on the TV exactly as she is.
“I can assure there’s no clever editing going on.
“She is really a lovely person and her confidence has clearly grown already and we wish her all the best for the next round,” he added.
Her studies at the campus based in the suburb of Highgate in Walsall involve music theory, singing lessons, theatre craft and performance as well as the history of pop music.
Viewers will next see her battle it out with five others for one of the three places in Simon Cowell’s over 25s’ group in the live studio finals of the show.
