Barnsley 3 Albion 1 – Verdict

Tuesday 29th September 2009, 9:50PM BST.

BARNSLEY V WBA 7 EB 29Albion slid to an embarrassing defeat at Oakwell as struggling Barnsley blasted another dent in their bright Championship start.

The Baggies were second best for most of the match, as their 62-year wait for an Oakwell win continued.

It means Roberto Di Matteo’s men have suffered three League and cup defeats in eight days, after staying unbeaten for their first 10 matches.

Chris Brunt scored a wonderful late goal for the Baggies on his return from injury, but by then their fate was sealed.

Adam Hammill fired the Tykes ahead on 14 minutes, when he somehow wriggled free in the box to score in the bottom corner.

Iain Hume bagged the second from the penalty spot just after the half-hour, after referee Scott Mathieson awarded the kick despite Jon Macken’s effort appearing to cross the line.

A comical own-goal from Shelton Martis on 80 minutes summed up his hapless night and confirmed the result.

Brunt pulled one back for Albion with two minutes left, lashing in a shot from 25 yards.

Maybe not unexpected after the result against Palace. Get behind the team, (yes, and individual players too). Losing to rubbish sides at the bottom isn’t going to inspire confidence, and the team will need the backing of supporters before it can start to believe in itself again.

shelton martis once again – gave away a penalty and scored an own goal and didnt help for their first goal.

now this guy played shocking in the premiership and literally everygoal we concede is because of his error.

please give meathead a run out or an emergency loan deal????

OH and call back my mate Joss Labadie to play in midfield please. He has scored 3 goals in 3 games for Shrewsbury

This is not the time to panic, but RDM is starting to show signs of going down the Mowbray route. He has got to decide who he wants to play in the attacking central midfield role, Dorrans or Koren. Koren can’t play out wide and that is what Mowbray made hiim do the majority of last season and now RDM is doing the same. Koren and Dorrans have played together in the last two matches and surprise surprise we have lost both. Koren produces his best football when he is in the centre of the park and that is when he scores his goals. Young Woods is a great prospect but he shouldn’t be playing in the same side as Bednar as they are two very similar players. Why didn’t Cox start up front with Bednar last night.
Jara plays as a central defender for Chile so why is he playing in midfield when it is obvious to everyone that Martis is the weak link in defence?
Come on RDM, learn these lessons quickly or the excellent start you made will soon be forgotten.
Come on you baggies, 3 points at Preston and all will be forgiven.

I am now getting worried. We seem to be a one dimensional team, in that we lose a few players due to injury/suspension and we begin to lose matches. The reports I have read say that Luke Moore is back to his old tricks. At Arsenal, Barnett was responsible for the second goal and Keily for the first one.
I may be harsh, I may have gotten hold of the wrong end of the stick, but we ard losing against sides we shouldn’t be losing against. I expected to lose against Arsenal, but Crystal Palace and Barnsley!!!!
What is wrong? Have we been playing crap but still winning. Have we got no back up for key players? How can we thrash Middlesborough and lose the next two league games?
I have followed the baggies since I was a small boy, my grandfather used to walk from Blackheath every home game in the fifties. I know all about dispair and about lost oppotunities. But why oh why is it that since the middle seventies we can’t seem to get a team that plays as a team and wins.

Totally agree with everyone! Martis is such a poor defender it’s laughable, Olsson is the best defender we’ve got now. Zuiverloon has impressed me a little but he needs to make more tackles. We definitely need a new centre-back or get Jara and play him at centre-back alongside Olsson just to try it. He impressed me against Arsenal and he was okay when he came on last night even though he wasn’t in his favourite position. But I bet RDM won’t play him there. Our strikers are also poor, lucky to have Bednar, Cox hasn’t settled in, Wood is a good young prospect and Moore seems to be lazy again and back to the way he was before. Can’t wait to have Miller and Morrison back. Taking ages for Mozza to come back, he was supposed to have a blister on his foot not a broken leg or something. But always sticking by the team when they need support the most. Good luck for the Preston match <3

A lot of silly, knee-jerk points being made here:

Joss Labadie- If he’s the answer, what’s the question?

JP & money- Read the accounts, then you’ll see where the money goes…..wages and salaries of players

Koren playing wide- Agreed, but what options does RDM have? TRBH made a good point yesterday re: Teixeira….is there something we don’t know about him? We have no other available wide players.

Meite and Barnett out on loan- How is this going to solve any problems? What happens when Olsson gets injured?

Kuszack- Is he really better than Carson? Is he going to stop the defensive lapses in front of him? I think not

Hughes- Is a 30-odd year old boozer who’s scored a few in League 2 gonna fire us to the Premiership?

    Kamara- No thanks, team spirit.

Jara- Yes, he’s a centre-back for Chile, but South American teams don’t generally face teams who lump balls into your penalty area. At 5ft 10, would you really play him against Jon Parkin on Saturday?

RDM was a hero 10 days ago, get some sense of perspective, this is starting to look a lot like the Wolves page.

Although Martis made his usual mistakes which contributed the team conceding at least two of the goals , the form of Zuiverloon is equally worrying. Roasted on Saturday by Moses listening to Tony Browns comments last night he again seemed reluctant to make a tackle. After appearing to have recaptured the form he showed when he first came , you wonder if he is playing with an injury. Considering the start RDM has made any criticism of him is stupid. Injuries have disrupted the team and the squad especially at full back is not deep enough.

You have been outed by post 40. I didn’t call you an idiot but said I could understand why someone else had as it was in reply to you calling a lot of players donkeys. Name calling is almost as juvenile as coming on here using a false name. Please stop it or we’ll tell your mom.

All the usual Jonahs coming out of the woodwork. I think the year we won the CCC we struggled to a lucky draw at Barnsley, alongside a few other dodgy results. Chelsea lost to Wigan, it doesn’t make them rubbish all of a sudden. It’s what football is about, while it would be nice to win every game it would also get boring after a while. I’ll tell some of you what bad is, it’s having to sell any decent player you have, it’s struggling to stay in the CCC year after year, it’s having no hope that it’s going to get any better. Some of us have been there in the past and for the last ten years I haven’t missed the bad old days.
I see people criticising the squad strength. We are missing four wide midfielders. How many players in this position should we carry, six, eight? and if we do how do you keep them happy when they’re all fit? Yes we’re short at centre half, unfortunately we had a new manager come in late, giving little time to assess the squad and ship players in or out.

Let’s all calm down a bit. None of us like losing but do we really want to sack the manager and half of the players after two bad results?

25 Bagggieboy. The answer to your question is yes.

I might change my mind if you stopped slagging the players and RDM off all the time and for once in your life talked some sense and supported the team.

We have only lost two games and we are still in second place look at all the other teams below us they also lost or drew their games as well. Newcastle could only scrape a draw at home last night.

I don’t want to see the Baggies lose just like you or anyone else especially the way we did against Barnsley.

But that is were the difference between YOU and the True and Loyal Supporters such as myself and the majority of the Baggies supporters posts begin, we DO NOT keep posting stupid comments like you do.

Yes we are all concerned with poor results, but we have faith and trust in the Team and RDM to come back to winning ways, it might not be this weekend with all of the injuries that are mounting up but be patient and we WILL come back to winning with a BANG and Lord help the teams on the receiving end.
