£1,500 bill for five skips on roadside

Tuesday 29th September 2009, 11:30AM BST.

WD3436705@SKIPS (EMAIL PICA skip hire firm from Wolverhampton has been ordered to pay more than £1,500 after leaving five large skips at the side of a city road.

Bosses at Jones of Bilston Ltd pleaded guilty by letter to five charges of depositing a builder’s skip on the highway without authority, at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court yesterday.

The yellow containers were left on the road outside the firm’s site on Monmore Road Trading Estate in Monmore Road.

The firm was ordered to pay £1,180 in court last February for similar offences.

Miss Sukhbir Rattan, prosecuting for Wolverhampton City Council, said: “An environmental protection officer was on patrol on March 20 this year and saw two skips next to the entrance to the yard.

“They were large, yellow skips. On March 30 the same officer was on duty in the location and saw three more skips.

“Photographs were taken of the skips.”

Miss Rattan continued the firm had already been warned of storing the containers on the side of the road.

“A warning letter had already been sent out to the company in December 2006,” she said.

“It reminded them to send off for a permit to keep the skips on the road side.”

Jones of Bilston Ltd was handed a £250 fine for each of the five matters, ordered to pay £377.50 costs and a £15 surcharge.

The firm was fined £750 and ordered to pay £430 costs in February 2008 for depositing a builders skip on Monmore Road and controlled waste on land at Monmore Road without the permission of Wolverhampton City Council.

East Park ward Councillor Keith Inston said today the result was “well deserved” for Jones of Bilston Ltd.

“This is great news,” Councillor Inston said. “I’ve had problems with the firm before for leaving their skips on the highway.

“It’s a well deserved result.

“I’m glad the authority has brought this to court and won the case. I hope the firm learns its lesson from this.”

Bosses at the firm were unavailable for comment today.
