Sell-out Bocelli concert scrapped at last minute
Monday 28th September 2009, 11:30AM BST.
Thousands of opera fans were left disappointed when Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli cancelled his sell-out Birmingham concert at the last minute.
Fans were already in their seats for last night’s concert at the NIA when the announcement was made that the show was to be postponed. It is the first time the singer has ever had to cancel a concert due to a throat infection.
The performance was one of only four UK dates scheduled this year. Tickets for the concert had been priced between £45 and £120.
The audience was told it had become apparent during afternoon rehearsals that he would be unable to sing. Bocelli was said to be ‘devastated’ by the decision.
A statement released by Bocelli’s management said it was with “extreme regret” that the concert had to be postponed. It has been rescheduled for November 4.
Management said the 51-year-old Tuscan, who has been blind since childhood, had been advised by doctors not to sing after afternoon rehearsals and his warm-up.
The statement said: “This is the first time that Andrea has had to postpone a concert in these circumstances and he has asked me to convey to each and every one of you who has bought a ticket how very, very sorry he is for letting you down.”
On hearing about the cancellation, the audience responded with applause, although some concert-goers were frustrated an announcement had not been made earlier and that the box office was not opened to take queries once the announcement was made.
Concert and car park tickets will be valid for the rescheduled date but anyone unable to attend can apply for a refund from their point of purchase by October 19.
Bocelli has sold over 65 million albums worldwide in a recording career which began in 1992. He famously appeared at the Royal Variety Performance at the Birmingham Hippodrome in 1999 at the personal invitation of the Queen.

Why always mention that Bocelli is blind? We all know!

Nice of the NIA to open up and sell programs and drinks when they allready new that he would not be singing

It was rather sad, but at least I can go back on the 4th. I think for some people it has been rather costly, but it was handled well I think. People said that they should have told us on the radio but too many people would have missed it and turned up on the night anyway. This could have caused a fair bit of hostility. As it was we were all very orderly and well behaved.

I knew something was wrong when the orchestra failed to appear but I never expected the concert to be cancelled. I know that illness cannot be helped but I feel the NIA new it was not going to go ahead as they had a revised date already to hand. Radio, email or text alerts could have saved many people a trip and Andrea the awful feeling that everyone was sat waiting.

Initially I thought the Indoor Arena had handled this well but now I feel ripped off for spending £6 on a glass of champagne and hanging around for an hour and a half – these food & drink outlets all knew it was cancelled and I think it has made the Indoor Arena look rather foolish, to say the least. Although I forgive Andrea, not his fault he took ill.

I think it was handled well, by telling everybody together and then offerring a new date or a refund.
Of course we were all very disappointed, and out of pocket. I’d driven 60 miles, my friend had driven down from Edinburgh, booked and paid for a hotel, but what can you do ? Not go anywhere in case of cancellation ?
Programmes are more souvenir items, so those who complain about having bought one and not used it, as it were, are just being petty.

We agree that Andrea was not to blame but we are angry the NIA could not have told us on the door, instead they allowed us through to purchase expensive hot dogs and chips plus £15 per programme then to tell us the news.
Having driven an 8 hour round trip from Norfolk we felt we had spent a day out on the A14 then to get ripped of by the NIA. Not good and we wont return to this venue!!

My partner and I together with my sister had made a trip from Devon to see the concert. We had paid in advance for a hotel and spent money on petrol to get there. We were disappointed in the NIA, having spent what we considered a lot of money on drinks and refreshments. We will, of course, be attending the Nov.4th concert as we are Bocelli’s greatest fans!

Think about it Bocelli fans this is the third concert that has been cancelled this year in similar circumstances. Not the first as stated by the gentleman on stage who announced the cancellation. My husband and I will not be attending the concert on the 4th as that incurrs more costs and how do you know that one will go ahead. We feel we have been abused by the NIA making a fast buck out of us all. Once bitten twice shy – never again will we attend the NIA
