Doyle ready to hit top form for Wolves

SUNDERLAND V WOLVES 5 GD 27Wolves record signing Kevin Doyle has declared himself ready to hit top form for Wolves – but warned the team to learn from their defensive mistakes.

The striker bagged his second goal in as many Premier League games in yesterday’s 5-2 defeat at Sunderland at the Stadium of Light – his third of the season after one for the Republic of Ireland – and was Wolves’ Man of the Match.

He said: “As a striker everyone looks to see how many you’re scoring, and it’s important you score goals, but I feel I’m contributing all over the pitch.

“I felt good yesterday. After 70 minutes against Fulham last week, I was out on my feet and really tired, but yesterday after the same time I felt like I still had plenty in me.

“It was nice to have that sharpness and feel that good, especially having come on in midweek against Manchester United.”

But Doyle warned Wolves must learn lessons in their defending.

He said: “You get punished so easily – yesterday probably harshly so – but that’s the way it goes when you play against top strikers.

“These lads might not have had a sniff or a touch for much of the game, but all of a sudden, the ball’s in the back of the net. We’re learning but we played very well and that’s what we’ve got to take from it.”

But Doyle believes Sunderland’s harshly-awarded first penalty for Segundo Castillo’s challenge on Darren Bent should never have been given, while the Wolves striker insists he should have had one for Michael Turner’s challenge on him.

He said: “I thought the decision for their first penalty was very soft, and it came when we were on top. I should have had a penalty – if it had taken place anywhere else on the pitch, it would have been a free-kick.”
