Sunderland 5 Wolves 2 – Verdict
Sunday 27th September 2009, 6:00PM BST.
Battling Wolves shipped five at the Stadium of Light but gave Sunderland a real scare in defeat.
Darren Bent’s controversial early penalty gave the striker his sixth goal in seven games and Kenwyne Jones buried a second spot-kick immediately after the break.
Wolves pulled one back two minutes later through John Mensah’s own goal and Kevin Doyle levelled after 55 minutes.
Two quickfire goals from Jones and Michael Turner sunk the spirited visitors, before Michael Mancienne’s injury time own goal gave the scoreline a lopsided look.
Wolves started well and Doyle dragged his shot wide before Bent blazed over.
But after eight minutes, Segundo Castillo brought down Bent in the area – although he got a toe to the ball – and the striker made it 1-0.
Greg Halford’s free-kick flew straight at Craig Gordon as Wolves mounted a response with Doyle looking especially threatening.
After 26 minutes Edwards spurned a golden chance to level when, unmarked, he headed Matt Jarvis’ cross wide from eight yards.
Mick McCarthy’s men were still in the game and Doyle tumbled under Turner’s challenge but got nothing. Jones then scampered up the other end and Hennessey denied him.
The Black Cats looked the most likely to net again and Mancienne’s horrible slice let in Bent but Hennessey blocked the striker’s lob.
But it was the visitors who ended the half the stronges,t as Jarvis saw Kieran Richardson block his effort and Doyle glanced a header inches wide.
Michael Kightly replaced Castillo at the break, but 70 seconds into the second-half Christophe Berra felled Bent in the area and Jones made Wolves pay again.
The visitors then made an astonishing comeback with two goals in five minutes.
Gordon parried Berra’s shot straight into Mensah who couldn’t get out of the way for 2-1 after 50 minutes and Wolves levelled on 55 minutes.
The goalkeeper handled Richardson’s pass back and although Karl Henry’s shot was blocked Doyle lashed in the rebound.
Wolves were on top but a moment of magic from Jones restored Sunderland’s lead, after drilling into the corner from 25 yards with 20 minutes remaining.
The Black Cats smelt blood and Hennessey tipped Bent’s low drive past the post after 72 minutes, but from the resulting corner Turner was left unmarked to find the bottom corner.
Richardson nodded Halford’s effort off the line and substitute Sylvan Ebanks-Blake headed at Gordon, but Wolves recover a second time and Mancienne deflected Bent’s drive past Hennessey in injury time.

Still trying to work out how we did’nt get something out of that game
Report abuse
Spirited but naive. At 2~ 2 I wanted them to go for it,but we should have tried to shut up shop.
I think the basis for the win against Fulham was the two holding players in midfield ,and I reckon Mick should have kept Castillo on,this could have provided more protection for our centre backs. But the reality is that their stikers were better than our centre backs. We must learn to keep it tight away from home.Easier said than done.

100 percent for trying, but doyle is our only hope of scoring, so we take him off to put on sylvan (no where near fit and nowhere near quick enough for this league)and the hoff who for his height doesnt seem to be winning his fair share of headers? lose to pompey and sorry to say it but season maybe over?. i hope you prove me wrong

On my way back from sunderland and it was an absolute shambles. Mick needs to go now and ince in.

the lads played their hearts out…bad refereeing decisions, clinical finishing, 2 pens against them and a lack of concentration at times. all this undone them in the end.
need a bit more cutting edge up front as well as better delivery, hopefully the returning ebanks-blake and micheal kightly will provide us with these much needed assets.
all in all, a lot of positives to be taken from this game, their is an honesty and a raw ability to this group of players, lets just hope they can add that final bit of sharpness, finesse and concentration which could turn performances like these into wins.
keep up the good work mick.

if we defend like that we are going to lose. 3 penalties in 2 weeks is pathetic. However apart from the defending we did pretty well. it was annoying to be on the end of that scoreline after the lads put so much into it.
the ref had a terrible match! If he is going to give soft penalties he has got to do it consistently. Doyle was barged quite blatantly and then so was berra. Also not sure on the rules but shouldn’t their keeper have been sent off for handling that pass back. If an outfield player handles it deliberately to stop it going in then they get sent off so shouldnt he have been sent off when hes not allowed to handle it.
Looking forward to saturday – we should beat pompey.

I’m really disappointed we didn’t get something from the game as we played really well. I don’t think I have ever seen a team play like that and let 5 goals in…
Report abuse
keeper should have been sent of for denying a goal from the backpass. Then wolves would have pushed on for a win. Keough gave the ball away to easily, should have been replaced earlier. mistake taking doyle off. mancienne is too light weight. Berra had a great game, except for pen. Still good performance. UTW

Poor ref, poor defending, time for some changes for the must win match next week. Ince in.

scoreline flatters .. hold your heads up . we played well

Effort was tremendous but too many mistakes, we look like shipping goals every game in honesty and not clinical enough in front of goal (yet) there was certainly a point there for us. Final score looks a lot worse than the reality of the game. Kighlty and the Hoff looked good and have both got to be in line to start, Jarvo’s crossing is still o where near good enough, granted he’s playing on his week side but surely they work on that in training? Ledley in Jan for that slot for me is looking essential! We’re still alright but should have had 2 more points on the board from Hull game and then we would have been sitting pretty. Next game must bring 3 points!

i just got back from roker park, why did we stop hoofing the ball and try to play football,we cant do that,we need a new keeper real quick,SEB cant cut it at this level, kites never got in the game, big george far to slow, sort it out now mick or get ince in asap.

This game brought me pride of the way our lads played in an attacking sense but then again frustration at poor defending and oh, what a shocker from the referee! First was not a pen, second pen for Wolves was and not given but yes the third at the start of the second half was. Those first two decisions in the first half were unbelievable.
However… if we play way we have against Portsmouth then surely we will win the next game, well that back four does concern me an awful lot, as a unit they didn’t work today, but hey great character come back from 2 – 0 down take that into the rest of the season then we should win more than we loose, at home especially.
There is going to be more games like this no doubt, but certainly we can stay up.
Good performance for me! Very unluckly and some poor refereeing has cost us. Berra and Keogh played particulary well i thought.
Shame today! did really well but lack of concentration and organisation at that back cost us
with out craddock in the side thats what the back four lack
hence why we have conceded 3 against blackburn and 5 today !
jody has to be back in the team against pompey
Report abuse
I see the refs havent got any better in the Prem.
Lets be honest, over all a good performance. Creating chances and plenty of posession. The result didnt really reflect on how we played. However the defending at times was concerning.
If ref’s decisions were made correctly in the first half then it would have been a totally different outcome
Report abuse
I thought we were the better team at 2-2 and I was happy with the performance. But to let in a further 3 goals ruins it.
The midfield is to easily bypassed. Jarvis needs a break, I’m a fan of his but he’s not doing the business. Jones is a better bet on the left.
Kightly needs to start. Ebanks needs to start and Keogh needs to be dropped, he offers nothing and Doyle is making him look good.
I still think Berra and Mancienne are a weak pairing. We’ve shipped 9 goals in 3 games with them as our CB partnership. Zubar deserves a chance or Craddock needs a recall.
We really should have taken a point today. McCarthy is tactically inept and got the timings of the substitutions and substitutes wrong.
Portsmouth is a must win.

Never really looked like winning but if we can take this form into our homes games and pick up points away once we start believing in ourselves and get our full strength team on the field we will start picking up good points.

This game proved that referees can have a big bearing on the outcome. Sunderland’s first penalty was a complete joke. Then Doyle is denied an obvious foul in the box by Turner. If that penalty is given, Turner would have in all probability been sent off as he already had a yellow card.
A lot of honest effort by Wolves but I still feel that the team lacks a genuine creative center midfield and Doyle needs a quality partner upfront. Hopefully, with players coming back from injury the performances will get stronger for a whole 90 minutes. The pressing game is great to see but it is doubtful the team can keep that up for a full 90 minutes against teams that will be far superior to this average looking Sunderland outfit
Report abuse
Proud of the lads again. Deserved something from the game. Worried about another soft corner goal and the fact that 3 of their goals came from bad decision from the officials! (pen, push on Mancienne and offside leading to corner). Plus pen for us so we won 3-2 in my book
Report abuse
not bothering with my thoughts on the match. i will leave that to the regular know-it-alls.
i do hope however that the fans focus more on the performance than the result. they gave it their all and should be lauded as such.
has to be said defence needs sorting, they’re all over the place, and if SEB doesnt get up to speed quickly we’re in deep deep dwang.
not the right result but plucky performance.
COME ON YOU WOLVES

Definitely a game where the result did not do justice to the performance. But what can you say about a team that concedes 5 goals in the Prem? You have to say that they are likely to go down. After a couple of good games by Berra he let us down again. Slow and just not good enough tactically. Not helped by a sloppy Mancienne.
Henry and Castillo just not good enough in the midfield.
Unlucky with both penalties but a good fight back. Doyle was excellent, Keogh A+ again for effort and looked good. Could not really fault Hennessey for any of the goals, he is improving every game.
A win next week over Portsmouth and I think our confident start can continue. A draw or defeat and we are firmly in a bottom 3 dogfight.

Here we go again. We could have won it if we hadn’t been thrashed. Wolves just cant stop letting in goals. The writing was on the wall in the pre season games where the defence was like a sieve against completely rubbish sides. Almost in the bottom three. Someone show Mick the door he hasnt a clue.

The Premiership is a cruel and totally unforgiving division as evidenced by Wolves yesterday, the better and more entertaining of the two teams at the Stadium of Light, yet, suffered a 5-2 loss.
There were a number of reasons as to why this happened, all I believe fixable by McCarthy in future games where, Wolves should come away with victories.
The Doyle/Keogh duo is a winner and the Manager must stick with and support these players as his main strike force, Edwards in support is clearly the way to go.
It is also clear that the three ‘star’ forwards Ebanks-Kightly and the ‘Hoff’ are either far from ready to perform in the Premiership, or, may never be goos enough to force their way into the team.
I thought that all three were lost in the game, and Ebanks in particular worries me that he will ever regain the form of last season. Maybe when and if big Chris returns they may once again strike up an attractive forward line, but my doubts remain that Ebanks will ever be up to the different style of football in the Premiership. He continues to play Championship football in the Premiership, is not all that adapable, and a little lazy.
Wolves will be happier with Foley back in the team and Craddock and Stearman on the bench, as while Berra has played some good defensive football, I would play Foley ahead of him every time.
Our biggest mistake in my mind was to send Folkes away on loan as he plays similar football to Doyle and Keogh, and would have fitted in well this season
After yesterdays display, all is not lost, forget the score which did nor reflect the game, and keep the Doyle/Keogh attack….its a winner
Report abuse
Great game but not the right result, it certainly flattered them. Thought we showed great spirit to get back to 2 each but I feel we should then have sat on it for a bit rather than push on immediately for a 3rd as we then got punished and were never going to come back from 2 down again. Must win Saturday now but with the same spirit and a little more maturity we should be OK.

ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING!!!!!!!!
IF THE HAPPY CLAPPERS EVER NEEDED PROOF THAT WE’RE NOT STAYIN’ UP .. WELL YOU GOT IT BIG TIME YESTERDAY. EVEN BURNLEY BEAT THEM 3-1 AWAY LAST MATCH LMAO.
BUT AT LEAST WE’RE GOING TO GO DOWN FIGHTING, WITH SOME PRIDE AND PASSION. IF WE CAN KEEP MOST OF THIS SQUAD TOGETHER FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP ASSULT NEXT SEASON, I SEE NO REASON WHY WE SHOULDN’T COME STRAIGHT BACK UP AS CHAMPIONS AGAIN.
Last season we were very fragile in defence at times (52 goals conceded)but our attacking play deservedly got us up.However it is now a different ball game 9 goals against in last 3 away games (How many might it have been had man c taken their chances as they did against man u).Unless we cut out these elementary mistakes and start to defend as a unit then i fear another Sunderland under MM is on the cards.MM you deserve another crack in the prem but you must start putting ability over workrate and favouritsm or i think your days may well be numbered.
Overall play was th best this season so far.A couple of bad refereeing decisions and a couple of bad defnsive errors was our downfall. Why wasn`t the “Hoff” brought on earlier?Out with MM,in with Jol or Grant and I think we would more than hold our own but please, not Ince he`s not ready yet.

Blimey….some commenters on here still think we are in the relatively easy area of the championship…wake up guys, this is the premiership, we are playing for 4th from bottom this year not the title so get realistic, there are going to be many more weeks like this so get your head out of the clouds and back the lads. And those calling for Mr Ince to be manager are a bit strange !!! He couldn’t cope at blackburn, not ready as a prem manager yet. smell the coffee!!!!

12 – You probably watched a different game than the rest of us, if you went to Roker Park.
seroiusly – i thought the result flattered us.
Defence was an absolute shambles – you head it away from goal to the touchline, not back into the middle.
And as for our left back – its like going back to the 4th division.
I thought going forwards we looked sharp, a little more sharpness from Seb and Doyle and we will be ok that way.
Its at the back where i have nightmares.
12 – agree 100 %. My only moan is that we really need to improve the defending on corners. We have conceded a number of goals the past few years due to us not having defenders stuck to the posts, Upson’s for WestHam and Turner yesterday so far this season, whereas Sunderland had Richardson on the line, saving a certain goal at 4-2 yesterday.
The referee was patently incompetent which cost us the match. Totally out of his depth. I suggest a new rule should be brought in whereby alleged bad decisions during the match can be viewed by an independent arbitrator with the 2 managers during half time or at the end of the match. In the match yesterday the referee failed to award an obvious penalty on Doyle. This could have been checked at half time and when the players came out, before the official kick off Wolves could take the penalty. The match could then resume.

Im still trying to get my head round the fact we have lost the game never mind getting beat 5-2!!! The scoreline totally flattered sunderland. We had more shots, more possesion, more corners which shows our dominance in the game but at the end of the day its down to goals and sunderland took there chances and we didnt! ok there 1st peno wasnt a peno and we should of had 1 1st half but this is football, we have to move on and must get 3 points on saturday! Overall i think were playin well at the moment and deserve more luck than were getting. One day our lucky will chance, no need to panic. CUMON U WOLVES

Why do people keep saying that the scoreline doesn’t reflect how we played? Of course it does. It reflects the fact that we let 5 goals in and only scored 2. Great game to watch and many positives from nearly all the games we have played this season, but you cannot defend like that in the prem. The scoreline reflects that!
400 mile round trip to watch that shocking defending.
As a unit the back 4 were awful – Berra had a shocker and was at fault for 3 of the goals, and Mancienne was not much better. Zubar has to come in alongside Craddock for the next match with Foley in at right back. Big George has also showed that he is not good enough and Hill should come in.
Up front, Doyle continues to improve but Keogh was useless again – lots of running but is never going to score any goals!!
Thick Mick should have changed it at 2-2 to close things up rather than going 4-4-2 with Jarvis and Kightly’s defending non-existent. Where was Henry for the third goal – wasn’t he supposed to be the holding midfield player covering the back 4?? And for the fourth goal Berra’s defending was disgraceful and cannot be excused.

Correction to 34: should read ” 31 – agree 100 %”!

To quote my Sunderland Pal” how we won that game was amazing, how we won by three goals was a travesty”.
He also thought his goalie should have seen red for deliberately breaking the rules to stop a goal. If a defender done this he would be sent off. Poor referee cost us the game.
1st goal – not a penalty
2nd goal – Fair enough
3rd goal – possible offside in build up
4th goal – another poss offside in build up.
5th goal fair enough.
Plus the fact we had a nailed on penalty and the keep er should have gone.
How can so many decision go against you in one game??

at the risk of facing the rath of a lot of people… Michael Mancienne is not good enough… Drop him and play either Berra and Stearman or Berra and Craddock… But Mancienne is dodgy… The only thing he has got is pace…
Kightley was non existant in the time he was on the pitch and i think i would have played Maerhoffer and Doyle up front… and used Keough as an impact sub…
That Michael Turner had a bad game and the Hoff would have roughed him up a bit more i think…
The ref was a joke…
Anyways… Im saying that we will hammer pompey on Saturday…
Long way to go… But the defence need to learn how to defend…
Oh and on a positive note… I think Hennessey is looking a better keeper and he has started to command his area…

On the evidence of last season £7 million defenders should have been at the top of any summer shopping list. Did anyone expect veteran defender Jodi Craddock to be our best available centre back by a distance? A disappointingly summer shopping spree is revealing itself as games unfold at this level. Shambolic.

What a mad game!!!
Ultimately our poor defending cost us, but how bad was the ref???
Penalties aside, they should of had 2 off, the young kid who come on at half time & didn’t the keeper deny a goal scoring opportunity???
Why did 5oyle come off??? He was THE outstanding player on the pitch & Henry continues to impress.
As well as we played yesterday there are lessons to be learned & fast.

12. Very very sad that terry from the tescos has to come on here and pretend to be a wolves fan!
I was delighted with the performance, we looked really dangerous everytime we went forward, the ref was an absolute shambles and I hope he gets suspended for what was a discraceful performance. How we didnt get 2 penalties was abysmal, their first penalty was never ever a penalty and bents goal was offside. I thought for 70% of that game we were by far the better side but as Steve Bruce said their front two got them out of jail, we were superb. Full respect to Mick for going for the win. Andy Keogh best player on the pitch again.

Football is all about opinions- I fully respect that. However, some of the opinions/ comments on here FRIGHTEN me to death!
Here is a snapshot of some of the things that have been said-
-Lose to Pompey and season maybe over!- what after 8 games? At the beginning of Oct? Unbelievable!!!!!
-”Maierhofer, Kightly and Ebanks-Blake aren’t/won’t be good enough for the Premiership!- so this considered opinion is made after SEB has made one start and one sub appearance; Maierhofer 3 sub appearances and Kightly 2 sub appearances (these don’t include the Carling Cup)Unbelievable!
- McCarthy out, Ince in!!!!- As much as I like Paul Ince, this one completely blows my brain! Absolutely unbelievable!
If these comments are made by non-Wolves fans on the wind-up then fair enough. However, if they do consider themselves to be Wolves fans, I hope they restrict them to their computers and maybe the pub because they don’t need to be at matches. Portsmouth IS a big game on Sat and Molineux needs to be rocking- it also needs to be supportive for the whole of the game, whatever happens and whatever the score.

Apart from the Blackburn game we haven’t played a game that we couldn’t have won including this one. Our players have the skill but every single time we mess up its down to silly little mistakes that is all down to our players lack of experience at this level.
We’ve signed some good players but can’t you see now that we needed established premiership players and not youth, championship or foreign players. Lets hope they make more of an effort in January.

MICHAEL M needs to be sent back to CHELSEA he is to slow at times in the legs and HEAD.The boy gets caught out to often in this league to often and he is obviously lightweight.BERRA on the other hand is starting to blossom even though he was at fault for the headed goal he is showing signs that he will improve and maintain the level required.
Keogh the always willing runner, SCORER he wont as he is to weak framed very weak in the legs and as no idea were the net is!FOR effort and even skill at times outside the box he cant be faulted BUT he as a MAJOR issue with his final ball.Jarvo needs to belive in himself he is far to on-off take control LAD you can play in this league your good on your feet start using your head for your final passes.
HENRY your looking good lad YOU are a player who is performing and are loving the challenge it shows in your play lad more of the same.

An exciting game, and deeply unlucky to concede 5.
Personally I’d like to see Doyle and Ebanks-Blake play together, Doyle and Keogh are too similar. We need the cutting edge finishing of Ebanks-Blake.
Maierhofers touch is pretty terrible at the moment. And he loses 90% of headers, needs some serious training on flick ons!! He does chase the ball well but thats not enough.

34. Feasibly and within the rules a keeper could be sent off for handling a backpass actually although it is very unlikely to happen, the rules simply state that to deny a clear goal scoring oppurtunity with foul play merits a red card, handling the ball from a back pass is foul play, and the keeper knows that, he denied a scoring chance and could have been punished such. I am not saying that it should have been a red, just that by the letter of the law it could have been a red

Doyle and Keogh look an excellent partnership and from what I see of Blake, he still looks overweight and off the pace.
Elokobi is not going to cut it at this level, he has a big heart – but no brain! Gets caught out of position too often and gives the ball away too easily.
Dave Edwards had another good game, our best midfielder for getting forward and looking dangerous.
Matt Jarvis is failing to impress at the minute, so there is no time like the present to bring Kightly in for him.

Some of the comments on here are superb. There are clearly some Albion fans moonlighting on here for some entertainment (see any comment by Bob Wolf, or anyone else using the name “Ince” at any point). But some of you so called fans sound so ridiculous it’s fantastic! We shipped five, but there’s no way the squad will leave feeling broken after that. To get back to 2-2 was a massive acheivement, especially considering the performance of that Ref. Then we got seriously unlucky with Jones’ second and after that the game was effectively over. Should Mick have left Castillo on the pitch and just swapped Kights for Edwards, it’s a fair enough question, but fair play to the lads, as the team in the second half got us back in it. We’re a good team with a genuine goal threat; we’ve got a few young players that are making mistakes, you need look no further than Mancienne who has oodles of class but he’s still learning. We are better than at least 3 teams in this Premiership, so how about some patience and a bit of faith. I saw a comment above about our season being over if we lose to Pompey this week?! Last time I checked the season finished in May, not October. Chin up real Wolves fans, if we attack like that we’ll be beat a good few teams this season; and all the rest of you morons be quiet.

If i`m right it was our championship side except for Halford & Doyle. With both wingers on we were back to 4-2-4, and for the last 25 minutes they murdered us down the middle of the pitch, where Henry was outnumbered, and the defence couldn`t cope with the quality of striker they had.
Mick still hasn`t learnt any lessons, with isolated wingers and too much space in midfield, we let 5 goals in. Why no defenders on the posts at corners, and wheres the coaching to stop opposition centre halves from scoring with free headers from corners. This is schoolboy defending, and our manager used to be a centrehalf. Sort it out Mick please.

A spirited performance but we look fly-weight. I thought Edwards, Doyle and Halford stood out – comfortable on the ball and sharp.
The left side is a worry – Elokobi for all his endeavour does not read the game well and cannot pass even a simple ball. Jarvis also appears to be off the pace and is afraid to take the full back on.
Things will improve with Kightly and Ebanks – who I am convinced will become premiership quality. However, The Hoff is dissapointing – how does this guy get the shout over Vokes – Vokes is better in the air and unsettles defenders.
All in all a mixed bag and a reality check that we need to improve immensely to stay in touch…..

Good performance yesterday but have to be very concerned about our defensive frailties. I dont think Mancienne is good enough. personally I dont think Zubar is gonna get a chance until its too late. Bit like Okoronkwo last time in the premiership.
Lee Mason is a shocking referee, but as per usual nothing will get done with him having a mare at the office. Fair enough we lost by 3 goals, but it could have been different if Mason hadnt been adopted as an honoury Mackem before the game lol

I read the comments on here regularly and watched yesterday’s game with interest. Andy Keogh receives a lot of stick, yet I thought he was arguably your MotM. The same with Berra, who seemed to have a sound game against two very good strikers.
You have the same problem that we had last year. You came up, spent a similar amount of money to us but have to play against Sunderland who have £20 mill+ worth of strikers. You have plenty of the ball but don’t score enough goals. I saw Portsmouth on MotD and Everton did exactly the same job on them that they did on us at this stage last season. Like us Portsmouth were all over them but didn’t have the quality of strikers.
It’s easy to blame your management team as our fans do with Jeremy Peace but the top strikers won’t come. This means you can only bring in the best of the rest. Not easy to accept but from your point of view I think Hull, Bolton, Birmingham, Burnley, Stoke and (despite beating Chelsea) Wigan have the same problem. For me the weekest link was Jarvis. Don’t know what his instructions were for the match but he never tracked back when possesion was lost on th left. He never moved for the ball and looked lazy. His crossing was woeful as was Elokobi.
Mancienne is definetly not the finished article, why else would Chelsea let him out on loan. Let him make mistakes at someone elses expense.
Hennessey seems complacent to me. He should have done better for the 4th goal. I think Ikeme should get a chance.
For me foley should start instead of Halford, Kightly should start and Dave Jones in for Jarvis. Not sure about front two.

The only change i’d make is to bring Foley back in. Kites looks overweight and needs reserve games. 45 mins was far too long on the pitch. Though Castillo was unlucky to come off. Not Henry or Keoghs biggest fan in the past but think they are playing fantastically and have looked better players in this division. Same too for Berra. Dont forget how well we played people. It’ll come with time lets all stick together. WTID.

I dont want to hear any more excuses on here, this is the premiership and if you dont defend you get punished. This was a prime time match with people watching all over the world, many who have never heard of us.We gave away 2 silly pens, gave one defender a free header, lacked concentration and did not defend at crucial stages of the game.We are a laughing stock.
Effort and commitment count for nothing if you dont defend. MM needs a serious rethink, berra and mancienne in my view are not a good partnership and if we continue with them we will ship goals.MM as a central defender needs to get on the training ground with the defenders and get them to defend as a unit. the Tescos had the same problem last year kept shipping goal, making silly mistakes and loss of concentration and its no wonder they got relegated. Portmouth have lost 7 games but if you look at the games several of them they have only lost 1 nil and lost 4-1 to Arsenal. They are defending better than us, but not scoring enough.I know they have no points but they have played villa, arsenal man city and I think they will win some games against weaker teams and goal difference could decide who stays up or not. A home win on saturday is important, but a draw would not be disastorous especially nil nil and we kept a clean sheet.

Yeah, yeah..heard it all before.Unlucky, unfortunate, gallant, should have got something out of the game…change the record for God’s sake. All you daft happy clappers are doing is papering over the cracks. We have bought some complete rubbish…Miljas,Hoofbooter,Halford, all passengers. Our midfield is woeful, and if Doyle gets injured we are completely stuffed as he is the only way to goal.SEB is totally out of his depth, Elokobi is slow and ponderous, even Mancienne is starting to look dodgy. I knew it wouldn;t be long before he got the dreaded wobbles. We spent too long chasing one player , and that damn work permit, instead of concentrating on the so called PL experience. We are doing exactly what WBA did last year. The gallant loser , and make some friends. It ain’t good enoiugh, and unless we get Ince in soon, it will be all over.I won;t be surprised if Pompey win at our place next week, law of averages , if nothing else, means tehy must win sooner than later.

This Sunderland fan likes Mick Mac and wants him and Wolves to be in the Prem next year.
Your team played so well yesterday, never gave up despite twice being two goals down and deserved better.
Stop all this ‘We’re already down’ business – you’re playing in the same league as Hull, Portsmouth, Birmingham and Burnley and you must have a reasonable chance of staying up if the team can keep up those levels of skill and effort shown yesterday (alright, the defence was a bit dodgy, but you’re going to get hammered sometimes; it’s only important that you get over it and approach the next game correctly).
A lot of people in Sunderland will be very happy for Mick and Wolves, when they succeed in remaining a Premier league team for 2010-11.
Well played Wolves.

48. Ron Flowers’ Medal.
You’re 100% right. Everyone should be equal, and everyone has a right to their opinion. That doesn’t mean all opinions should be treated as equal.
However, here’s a fair one from Steve Bruce, “It was never 5-2, we have to be honest.”
“absolute shambles” and “ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING!!!!!” it was not. After the match several Sunderland fans – incidentally, what good people – said that the scoreline gave the wrong impression. One said, ‘You wuz robbed’.
Let’s remind ourselves that the scoreline doesn’t always tell the truth. Remember Southampton ?
Charlie in Atlanta, “But what can you say about a team that concedes 5 goals in the Prem? You have to say that they are likely to go down.” er, OK – that means Everton, Hull (twice), Wigan and Burnley are all ‘likely’ to go down along with us. Just how many are going down this season ?

Albion fan in peace.
Wolves, like Albion before are being punished severely for every small mistake…To have in place a defence by Christmas that will give you a platform to secure vital points is dubious. Albion also lived with home draws and valiant away displays but in the end it catches up…a run of games against the big 5 and the dearth of points from that serves as a harsh lesson from all those “nearly” games….Sincere best wishes for prem survival…

1. Why does MM see fit to persist in defending corners with nobody on the posts…..it has cost us goals in the past, and it is costing us goals now !
2. Sorry to raise the Keogh thing again, but it simply will not go away….HE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. He gives the ball away 70% of the time (yes I count !!) and when he is in possession, he manages most of the time to take the sting out of the attack. Just Compare him to Doyle, who makes things happen. It seems he merits his place in the team on movement and workrate alone, and at this level that is not good enough…he will frustrate defenders, but not hurt them. Poor vision, Slow reactions, No killer pass and VERY few goals…yet he is still the fiorst name on the team sheet. I find it odd !

All the pundits on MOTD2 last night praised wolves and their qualities and we absolutely went for the 3 points. Very unlucky. Mancienne is still learning but he was quality at times yesterday. I think we will beat Pompey on Saturday although they have been playing very well. Hope Lee Mason gets disciplined for his inept display and blatently tried to keep the crowd off his back. For the pompey game, I would put Mancienne in at left back and play Craddock in the middle with Berra who is improving with every game. Kightly to start on the right and Edwards with Henry in the middle and bring on Castillo if we have a lead to protect. This season is going to be a cracker andlets face it we are better then Hull, Pompey, Blues, Burnley and Bolton and possibly Wigan who had a freak result at the weekend.

73. As many of the pundits are saying albion were having plenty of posession but no shots on targets on goals and were getting hammered. Wolves are having shots on targets and scoring but that was our first hammering when we were chasing a win. I think from the evidence so far wolves will fiish alot higher than the albion did.

We were excellent and from a point of possible victory were caught out and some how took a bit of a hiding! All the pundits and brucey agree it wasn’t a fair reflection of event!!
We need to be realistic that we are going to lose many many more than we will win this year but a point a game (which is what we have) plus a little bit more luck and settling down will bring us enough to survive this year!
Keep the faith, so many positives out of our first few games! Remember we only want fourth from bottom and we kick on from there! Big game next week and I’m confident we will come through ok!!!

The work rate and never give up attitude of this Wolves team is fantastic, but it is basics that have let us down again. I feel Mick made a mistake in not resting one or two players at Old Trafford, most notably Berra and Elokobi, ahead of this game. I was disappointed not to see anybody on the posts for Turners header, and the full backs are not tucking in to cover the centre backs, especially when Jones and Bent were running at Mancienne and Berra in the second half. This meant Mancienne and Berra had to back off, leading to goals 4 and 5 in my opinion. Time for Foley? I felt Mick should have made a change when we equalized, Ebanks-Blake for Keogh. Doyle should have stayed on. We also don’t shoot enough. We lost the ball to often around Sunderland’s box overpassing it and not taking the chance to shoot. Overall, I am still confident we will stay up as these are all basics that can be worked on. Come on the Wolves!

we were brilliant and felt proud to be a wolves fan even after loosing 5-3! I wish people would stop putting keogh down as the lad plays his heart out and in my mind is wolves best player! I know he’s not getting many goals but he plays a massive part in the team! we need to stick with keogh and doyle as the game was over when they went off! I love ebanks-blake but cant see him scoring in the prem even when fully fit. Doyle is looking very impressive and getting better with every game he plays! Something needs to be done about the refs as they are making the game unfair! Come on wolves lets keep up this heart spirit and tempo and we will stay up! If any of you boys are reading this then well done and keep up the good work!

Sorry to have to say this but yes the writing is on the wall because no WE ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

Sunderland are not in our “”mini – league”, we were playing them away, and went 2 goals down. The ref got virtually all the big decisions wrong (excepting their 2nd pen.), yet we played a lot better than them for most of the match. We are better than what the result suggests.
Anyway, what difference does it make if we loose 3-2 playing negatively or 5-2 and give it a go?
The main complaint I have is that at 2-2 we stopped playing – Fatal!
MM might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but he is the best manager we have had for decades – he deserves a full season with us at this level. Some people have short memories!

Plenty of positives from this game …and some alarming realities !! Mancienne is a liability at Centre Half – I like him as a player but please can we switch him to left back !! He has the pace to attone for his poor positional play and can get away with that out of the centre – we need the calming influence of Craddock with Berra in he centre – at least until Stearman is available again. Foley has to come back in at Right Back. Henry – please Mick – realise he is not good enough and play Jones or Edwards instead with Castillo who lookscapable at this level. Happy with Doyle and Keogh – as SEB looks way off the pace just now !! Welcome back Kights as well – Jarvo looking a bit out of depth at the minute !!

I thought the team performed with a lot of heart but quality is lacking in some areas. Mancienne looks too short at the back but I think he would make an excellent midfield ball winner with good passing ability. We have to improve the left side where Jarvis is to lightweight and Big George has serious distribution problems. Up front I thought Doyle and Keough worked some good moves, keep the faith

The buck has to stop with the manager on Sundays performance, a sheer disgrace to offer Sunderland two penalties, and the 4th and 5th goals were poor defending, nothing else.
Our Manager does not have a clue how to cope in the Premiership and never will because of his superior attitude.
We have plenty of talent at Wolves, but like a ‘ship without a rudder’ no leadership
Its well known that on the whole the players do not respect Mccarthy either as a man or his football skills, and this comes from a Wolves staffer that I have known for many years.
Wolves are not the happy club people are led to believe, and this is down to the Manager.
We must pay him off before much longer, and get someone in that the players can look up to and respect, there are plenty of possibilities, one who comes to mind would be tha present Palace Manager, Neil Warnock, who has the skills to keep our club in the Premiership.

Mancienne will be found out if he continues to face tall centre forwards. He struggled last year against Bristol City and this will be a recurring theme. He is a quality player but not a centre back. Couldn’t he play left back? George struggled and his distribution yesterday was very poor.

Do we all see a frightening trend here Blackburn score 3 Sunderland score 5 and we haven’t even played the top sides yet our defence and midfield is easily penetrated and we lack strength and depth in both areas and if we don’t get in some experienced players in these positions in the next transfer window then it will be a quick return to the Championship.

I must agree with the posts regarding Mancienne. He can do a fine job for Wolves, but at this early stage of his career, he is not a centre half.

As a Sunderland fan, I would like to say that your team has a lot of attacking flair but lacks any strong defensive ability.
Our team has not played together long and will need to gel, but Steve Bruce is trying to work from the back.
I agree the ref made a couple of clangers. But, I also thought if it had not been 1-0 so early on then Sunderland would have seen more of the ball. Notice, we did not really seem to compete until after it was 2-2 (you were all over us until then).
I cannot see Wolves going down. Portsmouth and Hull look doomed to me at the moment and I do not expect your team to be ‘the third one’.
We were lucky but, also your defence is poor. Darren Bent hasd a great return and considering he gets far fewer chances than Torres, Rooney or Drgba is scoring well.

I was absolutely gutted and amazed by the end scoreline,…we were as good as Sunderland, but the score dosnt reflect that,… my honest accessment is that at 2-2 we should have made a sub and gave them something new to think of, and maybe tactically to,… im not knocking anyone but Jarvis has been ineffective in all games with poor quality crosses, Halford is very pedestrian and dosnt read the game, we need Foley back for weekend, and also and I dont like saying it but I think maybe Mancienne needs a break too,…these 3 players need to be replaced Sat with Kightly, Craddock and Foley.

Sunderland deserved to win but not 5-2. They defended better and used the ball more constructively and that was the difference yesterday.
For most of the game we were hoofing high balls up and no-one was there half the time, need Maierhofer starting. Mancienne doesn’t seem very confident with Berra alongside him, that’s 9 goals in three games they’ve played together, need Craddock back. Kites did well and can only get better, can’t say the same for Lennon…I mean Jarvis, another stinker.
I just wished we’d shut up shop at 2-2 and try and pinch one at the end instead of going gung-ho. Hennessey may have made a few good saves but I felt that he was badly positioned for the third.
The ref without question had a stinker, first pen was harsh and we should’ve had one as well but it’s not his fault we shipped three from open play.
Pompey next week and if we don’t beat them, we might as well pack it in

A message to all the so called Wolves fans on this site.
If you are after 3 or 4 wins on the bounce then go and join the Man City bandwagon, I hear they won again tonight or their neighbours in red if you want instant success.
Otherwise buckle up and enjoy the ride because it’s gonna be a bumpy one but I for one have faith we will finish the journey in a good enough spot at the end of the season.
A reality check which some have already mentioned. Games like this one will not be a rarity for us this season so get used to it or get lost.
The team we played yesterday spent about 12 million on one player and we gave them a game!!

65. Sensible, rational comments from an Albion fan, lol. Can’t disagree with anything you say.
Wolves fans, get a grip. This season’s all about being better than three other clubs, nothing more. And get used to seeing a few more ‘hard luck’ stories unfold as the season progresses, too. Getting the odd, undeserved walloping is to be expected. We were playing Sunderland, not Southend, ffs.
Maybe Mick was a bit too bold and rash in chasing down a win at 2-2, but on the whole I’d rather see my beloved club be POSITIVE, thanks. Games are there to be won, and we need WINS to survive. Better to win one, lose one than draw TWO.
We’re young, inexperienced and faw at this level, but I’m proud of my club. Look where we were just 3 and a half years ago when Mick inherited pre-season Hoddle’s MESS. This is massive progress we’re seeing. if we have to accept being a yo-yo club for a few seasons, so be it. Ultimately, Wolves WILL become an established, Premier League force. BELIEVE.

What you say is true up to a point. I’m not saying this to have a go but you got up with what you call your ‘young and hungry players.’ None of these with the possible exception of Hennessy are attractive to PL clubs at this stage in their careers, they only want ready made first team players. The players we lost, Gera, Phillips etc are such players, although as has been proved, mainly as bench warmers. Which brings us back to my original point, it’s a massive job stepping up and judge your management at the end of the season not now. Burnley have brought in players like Tyrone Mears and are doing well at the moment but it’s a long hard season, remember Hull last year. All the best.

I completly agree with 74 about Keogh, I would rather see Doyle and EB running at the defence than Keogh trying his little flicks that are non productive.
Tacticly we are inept Holford stood still and should have headed the corner before it resached the Sunderland player, he was ball watching. No persons on the post basic school; boy errors.
Don’t forget when Conners was coach to the reserves we finished bottom, he and MM now appear to be trying to do the same.
I was optimistic before the season started but fear the worst. Some of the signings are a joke.
