Set piece is so key for O’Neill

Saturday 26th September 2009, 11:00AM BST.

Martin O'NeillMartin O’Neill believes Villa are beginning to become the set-piece threat they used to be with Martin Laursen in the side.

Former skipper Laursen regularly caused havoc in opposition defences from free-kicks and corners but Villa’s threat from set-pieces waned in the second half of last term when the Danish defender’s injury curse struck again – this time forcing him into retirement.

Villa have already scored three times from free-kicks and corners this term – against Fulham, Liverpool and Birmingham – as well as signing towering centre-backs James Collins and Richard Dunne.

And he is optimistic they can be a set-piece force again.

“We missed Martin Laursen in the second half of last season,” said O’Neill.

“In the game today set-pieces are winning World Cups and vitally important games. It is an important part to be able to execute and try to defend them.

“I’m hoping through the course of the year we can improve on last season and I’m sure we can.

“Can Richard and James chip in with goals like Martin used to? That would be the proverbial bonus.

“Richard Dunne has had a whole career in the Premier League and has done very well.

“James Collins is only in his mid-20s and is strong but can also use the ball.”
