Wolves boss puts faith in Doyle
Saturday 26th September 2009, 11:02AM BST.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy goes into the clash at former club Sunderland insisting £6.5million man Kevin Doyle can outgun £10million Darren Bent.

Doyle looks in his best form since joining Wolves for a club record fee in the summer after getting off the mark for his new side in last Sunday’s 2-1 win over Fulham.
But Bent is on fire after grabbing five goals in his first six games after ending his Tottenham nightmare and McCarthy is well aware of the 25-year-old.
“I tried to sign him when he was at Ipswich,” said McCarthy.”But I think it had already been done and he was going to Charlton.
“Darren is a good player and a very good striker. He works defenders with his pace and he’s good in the air.
“He’s in some good form at the moment – he’s playing week-in week-out which builds his confidence and he’s a handful.
“But I think Doyle is as good as him, absolutely.
“He’s done it before when he scored 13 goals in the League for Reading in their first season.
“He’s going to be excellent – he’s a very good player and I really think he can be first- class in the Premier League.
“I’ve been delighted with him – firstly, his workrate and endeavour are as good as anyone’s, but he’s got a great touch too.
“When he came on against Manchester United the other night, he made a difference to us with his movement and his pace.
“I feel for him because he hasn’t been fully fit, but he’s getting there now.
“He can call himself a Premier League striker – he’s scored goals and he’s played well. All the others are trying to earn that right.”
McCarthy has no bitterness as he returns to the Stadium of Light tomorrow, despite being sacked in March 2006.
Subsequent bosses Roy Keane and Steve Bruce have been backed with multi-millions, while McCarthy was handed just £5m to build a team to survive in the Premier League.
“Results weren’t good enough, but I left on great terms,” he said.

How can some fans not like this bloke. His man management is second to none. He has a team that plays exciting attacking football. They bust there gut for Mick. And yet, we get some dumb ass who thinks it right and correct to critisise.
I am all for constructive critisism, but frankly the facts not opinions are, Mick McCarthy is the best manager we have had for over 30 years. THAT IS NOT AN OPINION! THAT IS A FACT!
If you are anyway offended by this, then please go and support someone else because you are clearly bonkers ;0)

‘best form since joining the club’ – who writes this rubbiah? I think he will prove to be a very good signing. Even less chance of 3 pts than last week – so fingers crossed.

I’ll admit that having always found Mick Mccarthy a likeable character I was not impressed when he was first brought to the mol. However he has been fantastic for the Wolves & created an exciting young, hungry team who play their hearts out for the jersey they wear. Michael Kightly could turn out to be one the greatest buys ever for the club, especially at £25k. I’m really pleased with the signings we have made this season & truly believe that come May we’ll still be in this league.

i agree 100% mate the best manager we have had since bill mcgarry and i have been a season ticket holder for over 20 years

Mcarthy is not a good prem manager.
Golden Blood is obviously from another planet, that being zanussi! Get back to your knitting, you know nowt about football.

No 9 The best Manager Wolves had prior to the current one was Ronnie Allen, he signed some cracking players who Bill McGarry inherited.Ernie Hunt Derek Dougan Dave Wagstaff Mike Bailey.

1 The jury is still out regarding Micks managerial ability at the highest level. His current record of 4 wins in 41 matches only 1 at home is hardly awe inspiring. The signings made the season have still to make a real impact but yes i agree that the signs are promising.A tough couple of months ahead so lets see how we are doing come the new year.

1. totally agree :)
10. he has only managed roughly half a season in the Prem at Sunderland and spent 5 mill i’d love to see how many managers could survive on 5 mill bare in mind that includes transfer fee’s/ wages agents fee’s, Mick did sign some good players for Sunderland..Whitehead..Lawrence who are both very good Prem Players for Stoke now but thats not enough to keep you up with nomore investment on some better quality of player..im shure if he had the backing he’d of done a far better job there…The jury is obviously still out on weather he can hack it in the Prem but time will tell
However if you can name a better manager that WE’VE had in the past years do speak up..cuz thats what Golden Blood’s point is he’s OUR best manager we’ve had…nothing about being a Prem manager

Mick is a bit like Frank Sinatra,he does it his way, only he is probably a better singer. So far so good, but best in 30 years,I think we need to wait a bit on that one.Graham Turner did a good job ,getting us up two divisions and to my mind there was not much wrong with Dave Jones.

1. I totally agree and well said.
10. You obviously come from that well known footballing family that knows everything about football “The OConnors”. I dont suppose Des is a relation. You are much more of a comedian than him though.
I look forward to a quick witted burst of football knowledge in the style of your namesake.

NO.1… I SUPPOSE YOU ALSO THINK NEIL COLLINS IS BETTER THAN MANCIENNE, AND KEVIN KYLE WAS AS GOOD AS KEVIN DOYLE.
AGREE WITH 10. DES OCONNOR.. GET A LIFE MATE!

I’m very pleased with Mick. He has his irritating stubborn ways…like sacrificing the result v Blackburn to discipline his own players, but he’s assembled the best squad playing the best footie I’ve seen in my 31 years supporting them. (26 consecutive season tickets since 1980)
Mick’s spent an enormous 18M but its far less than the average Premier clubs have been spending. Remember thats not even 18M on an existing Premier league squad…its to create one.
30 yrs ago John Barnwell spent 1.5M on Andy Gray for a British club record, probably the equivalent of spending 40M on a single player now, at a time when there were very few foreign players playing in Britain back then. Err, there was Raphael Villazan though!
Nowadays, Mick’s side is having to compete against clubs with unlimited resources that systematically buy the very best players in the world.
A win for us tommorrow would put us 8th in the Premier League, 2 places behind Man City. So who’s got the better manager?
Simon :)

12. I dont understand why people keep bringing up records such as that. Its irrelvant, different team and he had no money. If you want to say anything do it on his premier league stats with clubs that actually made an effort to stay up.

No.12 and others. I dnt understand why people insist on bringing up irrelevant statistics about mick. Sunderland had no ambition or money, if you want to criticise do it on the stats of a club that actually made an effort to stay up. From where im looking this season doesnt look too shabby so far considering some players are still gettig fit…. or learning English ;)

What people are seeming to forget is, in the days of money and flash signings we did not have a no nonsense manager, now we have with less money so to speak and we are better than ever, we owe an awfull lot to MM, and so may it carry on for super mick

He is ‘getting there’ but for how much longer. For me he’s done ok but still to prove he’s worth £6.5 million.
Fight, fight wherever you may be.

called this one wrong mad mick, enjoyed the game.

12,Hasswolf post 1 opened this debate by quoting Facts not opinions. You cannot have a defence but no prosecution, the Facts i have mentioned are totally relevant and as shown again yesterday MM has a long way to go to convince me he has the mettle to cut it in the Prem.Had Man city taken half of the sitters they missed then our goals against column would already be starting to match the disasterous effort of Sunderland under MM.facts
