Win it for Mick urges Edwards
Friday 25th September 2009, 10:08AM BST.
Wolves midfielder David Edwards has revealed a ‘win it for Mick’ mentality is driving the players on to make it back-to-back wins at Sunday’s clash with Sunderland.
The squad returned to training today, having dusted themselves off from Wednesday’s Carling Cup exit at Manchester United ready for the rigours of the Premier League again.
Sunday’s game on Wearside will be the first time boss McCarthy has returned to the Stadium of Light in a competitive capacity since he was sacked as manager there in March 2006.
The 50-year-old Yorkshireman had a rollercoaster ride in his three years with the Black Cats, leading them to the Championship title in 2004-05 either side of a play-off final defeat and ultimately unsuccessful relegation battles for the club after cruelly being denied the funds to keep them up.
Edwards said: “The boys on the pitch will be trying to win every tackle and header for his cause. He’s got a point to prove up there.
“He did so well to get them promoted and it would be nice for him to go there and snatch three points off them.”
