Swinging sixties raise £370 for Macmillan

Friday 25th September 2009, 11:30AM BST.

Oldbury’s Roaring Sixties pensioners club have raised £370 in a charity raffle to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The group sold tickets around the Harvills Hawthorn estate in West Bromwich and 30 winners were drawn at the Myra Harris Centre, in Brickhouse Lane, Oldbury.

Prizes donated by members of the club included men’s and women’s watches and the draw was made by Insp Akeel Najib, of Wednesbury police station. Val Bowen, event organiser, said: “We were all at the club from noon-5pm to enjoy coffee and cakes, then we held the raffle.

“The main prize was a mobile phone. There were also dressing gowns, tins of chocolates, flowers, haircuts and all sort of things.

“This is by fourth year we have held a charity raffle and this is the most we have ever made.” Anyone interested in joining the club can call 0121 5321632.

Val added: “We are planning to set up a luncheon club at the centre after the kitchen has been refurbished.

“The estate was built in 1947 and a lot of the people that moved in then are still there now, in their 70s, 80s and 90s.

“The club will run on Mondays and Fridays and will give the elderly people chance to enjoy a cheap lunch and good company.”
