Swine flu on rise in schools

Friday 25th September 2009, 11:30AM BST.

swinefluRising numbers of swine flu cases are being reported at schools after pupils returned to the classroom following the summer break, figures showed today.

Hand gels are being introduced at schools in the West Midlands, after health bosses revealed at least 66 schools across the country had suffered swine flu outbreaks since the start of the school term earlier this month.

Health bosses expect are expecting a second wave of swine flu, and said today that the number of cases across the country had almost doubled in a week, from an estimated 5,000 to 9,000.

But they admitted data from schools was not systematically collected and that the expected number affected was higher.

Bosses at schools in the region today said they were prepared for a second wave of swine flu.

Mick Murphy, headteacher at Claregate Primary School in Chester Avenue, said: “We’ve got a pandemic flu policy, which we’re ready to put into action, but to my knowledge we’ve only ever had one reported case.”

Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson said while the number of cases was still relatively low, the signs showed a second wave of swine flu could be on its way.

Meanwhile, a swine flu vaccine to be used in the UK has been approved by European regulators, it was announced today.

The European Medicines Agency has recommended to the European Commission that Pandemrix, made by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), be granted a licence for use across Europe, including the UK.

Another vaccine intended for use in the UK, made by Baxter, is still being considered by the European Medicines Agency.

The European Commission will probably rubber-stamp the decision on the GSK vaccine in the next few weeks.

GSK has not yet delivered stocks of its vaccine to the Government, a spokesman for the Department of Health said.

Some stocks of the Baxter vaccine have already arrived.

If this is the major problem it supposed to be, wouldn’t it have been a good idea to keep the schools shut. These places are obvious breeding grounds for diseses & one of the easiest ways to stop flu spreading seems obvious to me.

Schools closed – no swine flu
Schools open – increases in swine flu
It isn’t rocket science is it? The best way to have prevented the spread of swine flu would have been to close schools at the time when ‘medical’ experts believe it would be most prevalent – not because Ed Balls and the Government believe it wouldn’t help. Seems the evidence is saying otherwise and it is what we have come to expect from this government. Finance before social health and well being.

so long as everyone uses the kill it catch it bin it, and wash there hands frequently there shouldnt be a problem.

My daughter and a group of friends went out bowling, the following day I was contacted by one of the parents to say there daughter had the `swine flu’. None of the other children contracted this. Its all down to common sense.

I think what we have to remember is this is no different to the normal flu sympton wish that we get each year and no-one goes on about shutting schools then do they.

More scare tactics from the Government. Can’t eat chicken because of bird flu, can’t eat beef because of CJD, can’t eat pork because of swine flu, what’s next – fish flu?

There is no way I am taking any of the Governments vaccines especially this latest swine flu vaccine that is untested, they are not using me as a laboratory rat or guinea pig. The vaccines have an extremely high mercury content, I still remember the swine flu vaccine fiasco in 1976, the vaccine did more damage to people than the actual flu.

I don’t want to alarm anyone, there’s a new flu on the way.

It comes from sending troops to foreign soil with inadequate kit, claiming excessive and frivolous expenses and lying through your teeth at every opportunity.

Thankfully it seems to be limited to Westminster at the moment and only affecting MPs.

    It’s called weasel flu.

I tried to call the swine flu helpline but all I got was “crackling!”.
