Olsson poised for new Albion deal
Friday 25th September 2009, 11:30AM BST.
Albion defender Jonas Olsson is poised to sign a two-year contract extension as the defenders at the Hawthorns were warned of a new threat to their places.
The vice-captain will sign an improved Hawthorns deal until the end of 2012/13 season, replacing a current contract that was due to expire at the end of next season.
Olsson said: “I had two years left and will sign for an additional two. There are just one or two things left to sort out, but it should happen soon.
“I really enjoy it at the club and have got a great deal. I have an important role in the team and it feels good to have the support from the new manager. I feel that I am one of the cornerstones of the team.”
Chile international Gonzalo Jara is standing by for his League debut against Crystal Palace tomorrow, when he is likely to fill in at left-back for the injured Joe Mattock alongside Olsson.
But Jara, aged 24, has played for his country at centre-back and right-back and fellow Baggies defender Gianni Zuiverloon is expecting a concerted challenge from the Chilean.
Zuiverloon said: “I think he is a very good player. He is a Chile international.
“Competition is always good for you. If you have competition you will train and play better to keep your position.
“It is always good to have competition and it’s even better because he can play across the whole back four, or as a defensive midfielder as well.”
Zuiverloon, who will keep his spot at right-back tomorrow, reckons Jara has settled well to life at the Hawthorns, including a debut in the Carling Cup at Arsenal on Tuesday.
The Dutchman said: “He is a happy guy. He is always laughing and making jokes and I think the team also likes him.”
Zuiverloon has been part of a clear improvement in defence under new head coach Roberto Di Matteo. The young defender has enjoyed his first taste of Championship action.
He said: “I actually haven’t played many games, but I played against Newcastle and Middlesbrough, which were like Premier League games and weren’t that different.”

He is integral and definitely deserves a new, improved deal.

Agree totally Nedball also i think when the left sided injuries are cleared up i can see Jara forming a central defensive partnership with Olsson,he may be a bit on the short side for a central defender but he looks so comfortable on the ball,he had a real good debut at Arsenal,he just could be the missing link……………..BOING BOING

He is one of, if not the best defender we have had for some time and he deserves everything he gets.

Fantastic news. I feel certain we’d have had some big offers in January otherwise, he’s single-handedly put a stop to our shipping goals.

2 – I think you’re right mate.
Olly can win everything in the air and Jara will be the pace to cover the runs behind and sweep up any knock downs etc.
I think their games could really compliment each other and forge a very good central defensive partnership.

You cant just reley on Jonas Olsson to win all
the headers, you need 2 big tall centre halfs in
this league, also Shelton Martis has done nothing
wrong and would be harsh if he got dropped.

DLB – I wasn’t suggesting that we only allow Olly to win headers, it’s just that with good central defensive partnerships you tend to have one of them that attacks the ball and another to sweep up after them. (generally speaking)
Chelsea have Terry to attack the ball and Carvalho to sweep up behind him (generally speaking)
Man United have Vidic to attack the ball and Ferdinand to sweep up after him (generally speaking).
Liverpool have Skrtel to attack the ball and Carragher to sweep up after him (generally speaking).
Martis has played well this season, but he’s still prone to making mistakes and giving goals away. No-one’s saying that this change will happen next week, just in the long term, both myself and Baggieno1 think that Jara and Olsson could be a good pairing at the back.

Olsson is a man to build a team around. The spine of Carson, Olsson and Bednar is big and strong. Martis is a fine player, (except for maybe the first few minutes of any game while he settles). Young Barnett made the sort of error against Arsenal we got used to last season. A classy chest back to the goalkeeper that didn’t come off, when a whack into row Z is the order of the new regime under Roberto. How to keep the best of bits of Mowbray and change to the pragmatic approach of RdiM we are seeing in action now. Let’s hope we can set a new record for games unbeaten, although taking anything away from the ‘team of 54′ always hurts me personally. I worshipped that side.

Nedball
Chelski,ManUre,and TheScousers,also have top
quality full backs who can also attack the ball
which takes some of the pressure off the likes of Ferdinand,Vidic, and Skrtel,
have you ever seen Zuiverloon,Mattock,or Cech
win or even make a header.
If RDM plays Jara and Olsson together in the
Championship then your`e just asking for trouble, maybe in the prem but not the fizzy.
If Jara plays anywhere then it must be
Left-back to replace the hopeless Mattock.

Great news if it happens. Typical no nonsense defender who scores goals

Jonas deserves a good deal and I am glad he is getting one. I reckon Jara will turn out to be a really good signing and it sounds like he is good in the dressing room as well. 3 points tomorrow against Palace.
