Old Trafford trip whetted Jones’ appetite
Friday 25th September 2009, 9:41AM BST.
Wolves midfielder David Jones has revealed how a trip to his old stomping ground of Old Trafford has whetted his appetite for the Premier League.
The 24-year-old schemer stepped in for only his third appearance of the season at Manchester United in the Carling Cup on Wednesday nght, in an unfamiliar left midfield role.
But Jones, who captained United’s youngsters to the FA Youth Cup in 2003, is hoping his appearance on familiar territory is a springboard to more action after figuring for just 44 minutes in the top flight so far.
He said: “It was nice for me to get 90 minutes. Hopefully I’ll get some more playing time soon.
“Going back to United and playing in a different role was enjoyable and I thought I got on the ball quite a lot.
“I came inside quite a bit from the left and found some gaps, because I’m not a traditional winger like Matt Jarvis. I enjoyed it and hopefully I’ll be able to push on further to get on the pitch in a Premier League game.
“I was happy to go back and play at Old Trafford, but frustrated that we didn’t push on more. It was a missed opportunity. You’ve got to be ruthless in front of goal and they made it count for their goal.
“I felt disappointed and a bit flat because we had some opportunities. I had a few shots and Kevin Doyle had a few as well.
“And it wasn’t just shots on goal – there were other occasions when we could have been a bit more clinical with our final pass.”
