Albion blog – Injury pile-up

Friday 25th September 2009, 9:27AM BST.

West Brom Albion versus Ipswich Town FC, Albions: Roberto Di Matteo.Roberto Di Matteo faces his first managerial problem this weekend as he decides who will replace the injured and suspended members of the team, writes Jarrod Hill.

The unavailable list continues to grow, particularly on the left hand side of the team and now includes Jerome Thomas, Marek Cech, Chris Brunt, Joe Mattock, Ishmael Miller, Neil Clement, and James Morrison.

The latest addition to the list (Jerome Thomas) probably cost us the opportunity to beat Arsenal on Tuesday night.

Even after his needless sending off we played well and created chances and it’s a case of “what might have been”, had we kept all eleven players on the pitch. His petulant push in the face of Jack Wilshere was always going to be a straight red card, but I would ask what was the difference between what Jerome did compared to that what Craig Bellamy did to a fan in the Manchester derby?

I hope young Jack never gets a proper slap as his head might actually drop off, yes I was quite disappointed with his theatrics. Yet the team’s performance was still encouraging in the face of adversity, and I must say I thought the Emirates stadium was simply awesome.  But tomorrow sees us return to our home and the continuation of our fight to get out of this league.

Crystal Palace are like many teams in the Championship, and by that I mean Jekyll and Hyde. Neil Warnock will have them in our faces from the first whistle and we must be ready to match them for effort before being able to play our game.

So let’s take a look at RDMs options going into a game with so many players missing. Jara made his debut on Tuesday and looked comfortable at left back, and I expect him to continue in that role on Saturday and I am sure he will be looking to secure a first team place.

I am expecting Filipe Texeira to fill in at left midfield and Koren to step out wide on the right. The problem is neither player prefers to play out wide but it’s a case of doing your bit for the team, and both players have the quality to be able to do a job out on the wing. I must admit for the first time this season I have a few fears about tomorrow’s game, our shape this season has been very much down to us playing old fashioned wingers and I just hope we don’t play too narrow tomorrow with our “stand ins”.

It’s only up front where a decision is to be made, the defence and midfield pretty much pick themselves with Carson, Zuiverloon, Martis, Olsson, Jara at the back and a midfield four of Texeira, Koren, Mulumbu, and Dorrans. I hope RDM resists the urge to try Reuben Reid wide right again, as he has been less than impressive when played as a winger.

In attack I would go for Moore and Bednar, and I am expecting RDM to do the same, in fact it is the most confident I have been for years and years of actually getting the team selection spot on!!!

I am not so confident of naming the subs though, but I would like to point out to Roberto that I am left footed and available for tomorrow.

I’ve only read the first few lines of your blog – I’ll read the rest in a minute – but you’ve said the same as me on Wednesday.

What was the difference between Bellamy and Thomas?
Surely the FA set a precident with Bellamy so we should appeal the red card?

We could use the same “self defence” line that both Bellamy and Gerrard (in the bar) used – “I thought the guy was going to hit me so I defended myself first”.

    Grrrrrrrrrr!

Jarrod – I think you’re spot on with the team for Saturday and I share your concerns about the lack of genuine wide men. Man for man, I would say Teixira and Koren are better players than Brunt, Thomas or Cech (not that they are bad players)but, as you say, the team has been much more effective this year with two wide men in it. I’ve still got a nagging doubt about a striker to play alongside Bednar but for the moment we don’t really have a lot to complain about.

I totally agree with your team selection Jarrod. I would like to see Jara play alongside Olsson when either Mattock or Cech are fit to take their position as Martis can be unsure at times. I definitely think we will miss Brunt, Mattock, Cech and Thomas as they’re quality players. Jerome was just starting to show how good he can be and we are very short of out and out wingers. However, Koren is 100% committed and always gives his all for the team and Teixiera can beat players on his day. Dorrans and Mulumbu have been nothing short of brilliant this season. And it’s weird how we spent less than half a million on these players and then we had Borja Valero costing us nearly 5 million who was very poor most of the time. I still believe we can win the game tomorrow as we have enough quality. Good luck Lads <3

Jarrod, due to the small size of our squad (could this be our eventual undoing?) the subs pick themselves: Kiely, Meite, Barnett, Reid, Cox, Wood and one of the kids. Who else is there?

I agree that the team pretty much picks it self
for tomorrow,I noticed that Elford-Alliyu wasnt
in the reserve side during the week so I reckon
he will get a place on the bench.
Albion urgently need a few loan players in
so I`d ask Villa if we could take Shorey
    and Gardner for a month.
    Albion Team:
    CARSON,ZUIVERLOON,MARTIS,OLSSON,JARA,
    TEIXEIRA,MULUMBU,KOREN,DORRANS,BEDNAR,MOORE.

Maybe with a lack of options out wide we could go 4-3-1-2??

I’d consider playing Tex behind Moore (possibly Wood though) and Bednar.

Play Mulumbu as the holding midfielder with Koren and Dorrans being a bit more advanced, so effectively like a diamond.

    Just a thought??

I`d probably go 4-3-3 due to lack of midfeild
options with Chris Wood playing just behind
    Moore and Bednar.
You cant really go into a match with no midfeilder
    on the bench.

    Possible Albion Team:

    Carson
    Zuiverloon Martis Olsson Jara
    Teixeria Mulumbu Dorrans
    Moore Wood Bednar
    Kiely,Barnett,Meite,Koren,Reid,Cox,Elford-Alliyu.

I mostly agree, but wonder whether it might be worth trying Dorrans out wide in order to allow one of Koren or Tex (depending on side) to play in the middle.

With our injuries how about loaning Reo Coker from Villa?
I doubt whether he will get a game at the moment!!

    10. We have an injury crisis in midfield and you’ve put Koren on the bench? Glad you ain’t our manager.

Also people saying we have no wide men, Koren, Dorrans and Tex have all played many times on the wing either for us or previous clubs. In fact all 3 were originally signed as wingers!

I hate to disagree but isn’t 4-3-1-2/4-3-3 playing right into Palace’s hands?

Palace and our friend Mr Warnock will undoubtedly come and compress the game, sit narrow, four banks close together and make it difficult to play through. By playing that formation aren’t we conceding before a ball’s been kicked that we’re gonna try and play through the middle of a crowded area?

Whilst it’s obvious that neither Koren or Teixeira is gonna charge to the byline, at least holding a wide position stretches Palace out a little bit and gives Dorrans, Mulumbu, Moore and Bednar a bit more space?

Bomber- Fair point on Reuben Reid, but being the only senior player in that 16 to be blessed with any sort of pace, may he hold the key out wide tomorrow if it’s 0-0 after 70 mins?

Hopefully it doesn’t come to that!! Come on you Baggies!!

Good suggestion – Dorrans signed as a left winger from Livingstone – he scored plenty of goals out there too – could be a good shout that!

14 – I don’t necessarily think it’s playing into Palace’s hands. I know that they have 2 men mountains at the back in Leon Cort and Clint Hill, who will win the majority of long balls and crosses into the box, and I think that we’ve seen Tex and Koren play wide enough times to realise that they are both much more effective when playing more centrally.

I’d much rather we played to our own strengths and use Koren; Tex; Mulumbu and Dorrans in areas where they can hurt the opposition instead of trying to stick with a formation and go for the ‘square pegs in round holes’ that we have mentioned on these blogs before.

Like I said though, it’s just an idea I had and I respect your point of view too mate.

Bomber – I’ve raised the same suggestion of Reo-coker with Villa friends. As you point out he ain’t going to play again anytime soon and will surely jump at the chance to get out even if for a short period just to let the dust settle a little. Would easily do us a job at this level.

I cant see Warnock coming to the Hawthorns just
to sit narrow and defend,he`ll be up for this
one and will want to win in style,Palace have

    16- Cheers Nedball

I generally agree with you as you’re normally one of the few voices of reason on here. I can see your point and we all know Koren doesn’t excel in wide positions.

I just fear we’ll get sucked into a scrappy game that Warnock will revel in if it gets too packed in the middle of the park. It’ll be much easier for them to defend if we can’t get turn them around facing their own goal, but like you say, do you think about formations or players? It’s an interesting one anyway.

I’m sure we’d both happily play 3-6-1 with Meite as a lone striker if it meant 3 points!!

I hope Palace come to try and out-football us tomorrow!! I just think they’ll sit but I agree with you that Warnock will be up for it!!

    Bomber

What would Reo-Coker bring? He’s a sitting midfielder by trade, I certainly wouldn’t swap him for Mulumbu!! Think it’s pace/directness and someone to open the game up that we’re lacking without Thomas/Morrison or someone who can create/score a goal from anywhere in Brunt.

Besides, and I don’t know if anyone else agrees with me on this, one of the first things I ever learned as a child Albion supporter from my Grandad was “we’ve never had anything of any use from Aston Villa”!!!

I’m not as old as some of the posters on here (where’s Cyrille when you need him?) but the likes of Ron Saunders and Andy Townsend seem to back this theory up in more recent times. I hope Carson and Moore go on to break with tradition. Anyone got any more examples?

Think Leeds United and Johnny Giles. Giles always reckoned to ‘get his retaliation in first’. Wouldn’t wash these days though and Thomas will serve his 3 match ban for saftness in the face of the enemy. Roberto needs to impress upon him that beating the player until that player lashes out makes far more sense. Thomas is and can be a great match winner for us if he keeps his cool. He’s good enough for the Prem. without a doubt but needs a temperament to match his skill.
