Library to close for big revamp
Thursday 24th September 2009, 11:30PM BST.
Wolverhampton’s landmark Central Library will close for six weeks for a £932,000 overhaul, it has been announced.
Workers will move into the city centre library next May to strip out and replace wiring, resulting in the temporary closure of some rooms. The Snow Hill building will then shut down completely for six weeks over July and August next year while a lift is installed.
The revamp of the library, which includes rewiring personal alarms, is expected to be complete in April 2011.
Stock is also being moved around to offer “a more logical approach” to users, and the library will be redecorated. If the project proved popular, it could be extended to other libraries in Wolverhampton.
As part of the revamp of services, Pendeford Library in Whitburn Street, will open on Sundays as part of a £5,000 six-week pilot scheme starting in October.
A check-and-send service for bus pass applications is being introduced and libraries are also getting a new computer system for stock. A report to the council said the project would be “noisy and dirty”, forcing the closure.
The library service made budget cuts of £157,000 this year, which will increase to £266,00 in 2010/11.
