Man United 1 Wolves 0 – Verdict
Wednesday 23rd September 2009, 10:00PM BST.
Wolves were edged out of the Carling Cup after holders Manchester United turned on the style in the second-half at Old Trafford.
A moment of free-flowing football split upon the defence for 10-man United net through striker Danny Welbeck net in the 66th minute and won the game, despite the home side playing a man down.
Left-back Fabio saw red in the 29th minute for hauling down Michael Kightly when the Wolves winger was clean through, after the ball had landed kindly for him to break through in a tussle between Stefan Maierhofer and Wes Brown.
From the ensuing free-kick, former United youngster David Jones lifted a ball that was headed for the far corner, only for former Albion goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak to wonderfully tip over with one hand.
Jones had an even better chance in the 45th minute, when a wayward Gary Neville header dropped right on to his advancing foot unmarked in front of goal, but the midfielder could only volley over the bar.
And the 10 men of United came out galvanised after the break and, with the assistance of goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, struck the woodwork.
Nani’s 65th minute cross evaded the head of Welbeck, instead hitting the chest of a startled Hahenmann and onto his near post.
And United went one better a minute later with the only goal of the game.
A neat three-man passing move between Michael Carrick, Michael Owen and Welbeck saw Owen return the ball to the young forward, who picked his slot and stroked it past Hahnemann and into the bottom far corner.
But Wolves were inches away from forcing an equaliser with 10 minutes to go.
George Elokobi’s cross into the box was met with a sweeping volley from sub Kevin Doyle, which had the beating of Kuszczak but landed narrowly wide.

I don’t think Michael Kightly deserved the Zoological tendencies of Manchester United.

What a load of rubbish. Why the hell didn’t Mick McCarthy bring on keogh and doyle at the start of this ridiculous game. The game only livened up in the last 10 minutes of the match, what was Maihoffer supposed to be doing, did he do anything, lots of wolves players panicked and didn’t know what to do with the ball except give the ball away. They had an hour to prove themselves and should have dominated, taken control, seized opportunities, created chances, they didn’t. Mick should let rip those players who didn’t do well, they let the team down and he should let them know they must do better, these were not a bunch of amateurs playing they were Manchester United, you don’t give the ball away and panic. Better luck, Sunday, God help us.

Before Kick off I had little expectation, but when that piece of filth fabio tripped and then physically grabbed Kights to the ground he wasnt the only one who saw red.
So yes, cheating scum down to ten and by the end of the half we were looking strong, and I started to believe.
It was then obviously disappointing to taste defeat but the one two for Wellbeck was pure class it has to be said.
Doyle, Mairhoffer and Berra were superb and Jones, Big George and SEB had a few inspired moments… BUT it was our saviour, our one and only, MICHAEL KIGHTLY who shone above all. Oh how we have missed you. All is forgiven, please please please dont injure yourself ever again. 11/10 and MOTM by a country mile. Pace agility and creativity… the lot !
There were some strange decisions by Jones, and ofcourse his howler infront of goal, Milijas once again looking decidedly average but the only real negative was Hahneman – I can some his performance in three words USELESS, SUICIDAL and USELESS – is Ikeme still injured? We surely cant be relying on this buffoon as backup.
Anyhoo – Ad Mant, siginng out – a bit bummed but im sure we’ll pick ourselves up for Sunderland on Sat

good game. Controlled it for large periods. Plenty of play in their final third but
no real good opportuntities.
Encouraging display following on from Fulham albeit with many changes to squad.
Eating my words about Berra and Craddock, Berra has been great last 2 games although pace
let him down when Wellbeck turned him for the goal.
Fair result even against a 10 man side. But they have won their last 14 cup games at home!
I think Elokobi is going to be the player of the season. It might be tough to hang on to him
in January window. Very hard to find a left back that can consistently put crosses in at pace
and get back all the time. Controlled Nani throughout. He is impressing me every game.
Milijas looked less than committed. Glimpses of a good player but jury out on him.
Doyle looked sharp again after coming on late.

i cant help but be really disappointed at this result, with the team we put out, and the team united put out, i feel this is a real blow, we shud be doin much better than this. Hopefully we can concentrate more fully on the league now, tbf we had our chances this game, but never took them, and unfortunatly united’s reserves punished us.
movin onwards and upwards in the league

Decent performance but feel as though it was a chance wasted to get one over em up there as we had an extra man for an hour and they did put out a fairly average team – by their standards. Oh well, back to the more important things like the Prem. Berra looked solid again which was a bonus, Kightly impressed early on and Doyle had our best chances when he came on. Still not too sure about SEB, doesn’t look right and could do with shedding a pound or two!

Don’t you either read the previous MM quotes or have little understanding of tactics and football management?
MM clearly explained his tactics before the game in the E&S.
“It (these games) also gets players a game that otherwise don’t get a game.”
“For instance, if Stefan, Michael Kightly and Sylvan don’t get a game tomorrow night, when I need to call on them they won’t be ready because they haven’t played at that level.”
All true Wolves fans are disappointed at the result, but these shallow, inane comments do nothing to support the team. What do they do for team morale? Do you think that your comments may chip away at the confidence the team / MM at the next game. Will you have helped them?
Try looking a little deeper next time.

Elokobi was skinned by Nani on numerous occasions in the first half, got better in the second half. Disappointed with Milijas, apart from that a really good performance, especially Kightly. You feel that if they “turn up” on Sunday should come back with a share of the spoils.
No disgrace losing to a very skillful and useful Man U second string, I enjoyed the game I loved it when Elokobi decided that he had had enough of Nani skinning him and gave him a bit of physical he didnt come much after that, Berra is getting “berra” each game – great to see Kites & SEB back cant wait for sunday – I dont like to lose but if we do and put that amount of effort in every week I wont be moaning (too much)

Ad Mant? wot a load of rubbish!
Mairhoffer and jones were useless but the worst player on the pitch by a country mile was george elokobi, all of their attacks were channelled down the right as they quickly discovered that our left back and left midfielder were a pair of donkeys!
People seem to have mixed comments on here about Jones and Elokobi.
Personally I thought Jones had a really good game, bar not hitting the target infront of goal. Kightly was exceptional. milijas looked tired and a bit lazy coming on a sub. Doyle was excellent but the weak link for me was Elokobi, granted we seemed to offer little from the left wing he was caught in forward positions and infront of Nani quite often. He did win the physical battle with Nani however

Wake up people. What do you expect for a friendly?
These boys came from these situations:
Hahnemann – One previous game.
Foley – half a game this season and first game back after getting a knee injury.
Berra – hardly played for the first team in recent months.
Craddock – first time back after injury.
Elokobi – Didn’t play last year. Only in because of Ward’s recent injury.
Jones – Not played seriously for months.
Castillo – Second game.
Milijas – Settling in with new club.
Kightly – First game since March.
Maierhoffer – had a few minutes before this game.
SEB – returning from hamstring injury – first start.
Doyle – hardly played after injury and joining new club.
Did I miss anyone?

At the end of the day there is no doubt in my mind that Kites would have scored. We were playing a very experienced Man Utd side and wit was great to see Foley, Kites and Sylvan back. Kites can be a big threat in the top flight. I thought Jones and Elokobi had very good games and I agree that Hahnemann looked a bit shaky.
Things are looking good for survival!

14….spot on !! My thoughts exactly !! Doyle reminds me very much of John Richards and I think he will be just as good for us. SEB is finding his lungs and legs again and Kightlly – inspiration about to happen ;-) Im quite happy !! Another learning curve for us – MM was quite right in his assesment of the performance – we gave them far too much respect and didnt believe. Lesson to be learned = we need to go to places like Old Trafford to win matches – not be just part of the occassion for the home team !!

Whilst the experiment of playing those who have had few opportunities is fine, it is not helping in continuity and the team playing as a unit. I can only repeat that after passing the ball, some players stand still and gaps are left as the team attack. It is called ball watching
Milijas is not a defensive mid fieled player, his style is to play in the spaces and set up the attacks, in old money, he is a touch and run player.he then relies upon his colleagues to make ready to receive the ball. Hence is the Wolves problem. Henry is suposed to be the tiger and win the ball and try to give a decent pass from time to time. He just appears out of his depth?
There are too many of the Wolves players who stand and stare, building castles in the air
Too many Wolves players are slow thinkers and go there when thay should have been there yesterday. Wolves had an extra man and you would have thought it was Man Utd who had the extra man. It is obvious E Blake is not match fit but he does have movement.
Swisswolf failed to recognise that Nani jas been a Premier League pakyer for a while and is now a regular for Man Utd, Elokobi shut down Nani and still managed to be our best attacking player.
The team worked hard, they are young, there are some good players but it is up to the coaches to get the best out of the players.

Oh my goodness – here we go again! People on here are so quick to jump in! At the end of the day, we turned up to the game and we had a go. There were plenty of people who were willing to write us off before the match, thinking we would get hammered. Yes we lost and we had the 1 man advantage, but we looked good at times. And, more importantly, this was the Carling tea-cup people. Take the game for what it was, a warm up for our future matches. And to all of those people who are criticizing Elokobi – you really should go to specsavers!!

15. What are you on about Carrick alone cost what all our signings did this season, as did Nani, as did Valencia who came on as a sub. Owen one of the greatest strikers this country has produced, Neville one of the finest right backs to have played the game in my opinion, it’s hardly a reserve side those guys who i have mentioned will all play 25+ games for United this season easy. They must have had 200+ international caps on the field. I thought we did pretty well a bit more conviction and I think we would have taken the game. Also I think Kites would have scored and we would have gone on to win. Class goal from them but should not have let a team a man down pass round us so easy.

funny how people see individual performances differently. in general i thought our passing lacked accuracy and crispness in comparison to Man ure.how many times was the pass half a yard away from perfect requiring an extra touch?

When you are a Team that has the class of Man-U you can afford to put out your “second string” as it is called because they are as good as most in the Premiereship. When you are a newly promoted team you need to put out your so called first teamearly in the season to get them used to playing together.MM failed to do this and his comments after the game made me wonder if he is as knowledgeable as he tries to make out.I think not.Again I will say GO NOW MICK AND GIVE SOMEONE CAPABLE OF DOING THE JOB A CHANCE .

SOME STRANGE COMMENTS ABOVE!..WE LOSE TO A 10 MAN RESERVE TEAM, AND WE’RE LOOKING GOOD TO STAY UP.
ELOKOBI WAS BRILLIANT, EVEN THOUGH NANI MADE HIM LOOK AS USEFUL AS A TRAFFIC CONE.
THE YANK IN GOAL LOOKED LIKE AN EPELPTIC ON ACID WHEN THEY ATTACKED.
THE ONLY POSITIVE FROM LAST NIGHT WAS THE FACT IT DIDN’T COST US 3 POINTS. OH WELL, ROLL ON SUNDAY. LET’S HOPE WE DON’T MESS THAT ONE UP!!

Hey no.3 Charlie. Where you watch the games in Atlanta?
3 starters from sunday, not our first team. The rest were players coming back from injuries and fringe players needing games. Lets be honest they would of all played in the reserves for match practice and this is exactly what it was, a glorified reserve game at a big venue live on tv! Sunday is more important- I would of lost 20-0 last night to get a 1-0 win on Sunday. We are getting a cracking squad lets get them all fit, I’m predicting a 15th place finish.
Bit gutted we didn’t hurt United when given the best chance we’ll ever have but proud that the lads weren’t overawed.
Half the team played on Sunday (how many of the United players played against Citeh?), four were back from injury and several squad players haven’t been playing first team football.
I thought Jones played well, always seeking the ball but needs to work on his finishing! Berra was solid again. Elokobi looked vulnerable to the pace of Nani until he got physical, then he was fine. Milijas looked sluggish and slow to react. Foley, Kites and Ebanks looked short of match time (obviously). Doyle looked spritely when he came on.
What annoyed me was the sycophantic and biased commentary from Sky – but what do you expect? And how did Welbeck get man of the match?
Shame we didn’t make more of the opportunity but key players got a good run out and we have to realise that while it would be nice to have a cup run our season’s aim is premiership survival.
Rant over…

Come on lads, let’s look at the positives – it was a decent warm up for Kightly and SEB.
If we’re honest with ourselves, who wants to progress in that meaningless, energy sapping cup?
We’ve got serious business to concentrate on – staying up.

I must have watched a different game as I thought Elokobi played really well. He frustrated Nani on so many occasions and actually shone as one of the top 3 performers. Oh and yes Nani spun off him a few times but what do you guys slating him expect, it’s his first season at this level.
no point saying how good or bad Wolves were. Object of the game is getting the ball into the back of the net. Even the Sky commentators were saying that Wolves attack fizzled out at 25yds from goal. Personally, could’nt see us scoring until Doyle came on. Ebanks Blake might have been good in the Championship, but too slow in the big league.

Strong team on paper but an obvious exercise in getting fitness / games under their belts.
SEB nowhere near ready yet. Doyle + Keogh up front for me next match. If we are going to launch it, then put The Hoff in because he looked a little wasteful on the ground.
Edwards + Henry in the middle.
Jody + Berra commanding, great positioning. That’s the back 2 for me next match as Mancienne needs to take a breath.

having sat and watch the game at Old Trafford last night, the team did well, George had little or no support on the left side as we were playing with 3 central midfielders. The space was there and the game was crying out for Jarvis.

AS usual completely mixed and sometimes extreme comments. Lets not forget though that this was a chance to get several key players some match fitness. I thought SEB and Kites linked well and I am waiting to see SEB and Doyle play together as this is surely our first choice combination although they will need a few games together to get it right. We set out to stop Man U playing and I thought we did a good job of that – that is why when they went down to 10 men the game hardly changed – we weren’t dominated like sections of the media portrayed and we didn’t play a team full of kids.

I would take a point on Sunday but think we should attack them and stop them playing (like sunday) Mancienne needs to play as I feel he has the pace to watch Bent. Keogh is playing very well and suited to the premier league my team would be:
Hennessey (best game for wolves last sunday)
Halford (good game v fulham long throw ins)
Berra ( best game for wolves last sunday)
Mancienne (pace for bent)
Elokobi (hit the winger early)
Jarvis (get the ball in earlier)
Henry
Castillo (those 2 stop them playing)
Kightly (replaced by edwards)
Keogh
Doyle

Isn’t it funny how we view the same thing in different ways.
Some saying how they thought Elokobi played well, personally I thiught he was clueless as to how to deal with Nani, I have it on ‘good authority’ that he was still twisting about looking for Nani on the coach all the way back down the M6
I thought Berra & Craddock were v solid.
Hannemann was too casual too often.
I thought we passed the ball well when Utd let us, i.e. when it come to the last 3rd of the pitch we were lacking the killer ball too often we didn’t get it past the first defender.
But the real bonus for me was the minutes on the pitch for the lads that needed them, Foley, Kites, SEB, The Hoff, Berra, Craddock & even Doyle who I think just looks better & better.
I also think McCarthy’s comments after the game were absolutely spot on, now it ain’t too often we can say that!!!

The Hoff did nothing last night apart from run around like a headless chicken. His positioning was poor and the only thing he did that is worthy of mention is to flick on a few long balls to a colleague.
Hahnemann was a liability, Castillo was invisible and Milijas didn’t look like he was up for it.
Kightly needs to find his left foot and use it occasionally and he and SEB need to play a few games in the reserves to get their fitness up.
Doyle looked the best player in our team last night, although I think he thinks he’s a bit special.
Just my opinion.

i dont see why anyone is complaining about elokobi. granted, most of uniteds attacks were channelled down our left side, but a world class manager like sir alex, who lets face it, knows damn right that jones is no left mid, would surely instruct his team to attack down our left, as there would be little protection for big george. So of course they would have some luck down our left, but i felt that big george did well the whole game, and nani had little to offer against him. I remember one cross of note from the lad…all others were next to useless, or blocked, due to the pressure big george put him under!

Clearly, our biggest worry after watching Ebanks Blake short performance last night is will he ever be good enough for a regular spot in the Premiership. granted it was his first game for some time, he is not fit, is over weight, and looked lost without the player he performed so well with last year, big Chris.
To add to that worry, I will be surprised if Chris will ever regain his Championship form, and will struggle this year.
I predict that neither Ebanks or Chris will be regular first choice players for Wolves, despite how well they performed in the Championship, and we will be looking for a new forward in January.
1.Doyle last night showed that he was worth every penny of the 6.5 million we spent.
2.Keogh is having a purple patch, runs well with Doyle, how long , who knows /
3.Elokobi- Berra-Ward-Stearman will be o.k
4.Castillo-Hough o.k given the opportunity
5.Kightly- class player, not match fit yet
6.Foley and Jarvis. will survive
The rest of the squad will be a toss of the coin to see if they are Premiership class.
I predict that Volkes by mid season will be a regular first choice player…Coventry on loan – What a waste !!!!

why moan about last night…this wolves team always seem to learn from mistakes and the biggest one is to get over the inferiority complex…virtually all positions in the team are covered to have a tilt at staying in the division and I’m pleased that even when we play poorly e.g. blackburn, we are creating chances….hopefully match sharpness to doyle, SEB and the hoff should sort this out. not ruling out keogh who i think can be useful away from home using his energy to provide impetus up front whilst supporting the midfield.

Here’s what I thought about last night, from a self confessed armchair supporter who’s never been to a match but enjoys following footy on TV and as, Black Country in exile, particularly ‘my team’ the Wolves:
As we more often than not lose when on telly I settled down to wacth with my heart in my mouth, as time went on I calmed down, at least we are not embarassing ourselves I thought, and after all we’ve beaten them before.
I thought we lacked the sharpness of the big teams when we had the ball, our players seemed to get the ball then look around for far too long for options, you don’t have the luxury of time against such opposition.
SEB didn’t impress me, most of the time he seemed to give the ball away when he got it.
Elokobi did impress me, I think he has a good work rate and closed Nani down for a good precentage of the time, he can also seem to supply balls to a players feet well.
Kightly and Doyle were our best striking options, pity Doyle wasn’t brought on earlier.
Hannehman – OMG get rid!!
It’s a shame that we couldn’t have won against 10 men but still. I feel that if we had more finesse when we had the ball we’d have done better.
I do think that we have enough on our plate this year without having to take part in a cup we are not going to win.
And that’s the opinion of a rank amateur Wolf!
Thanks for reading, first time I’ve commented as I don’t have a lot to add!

after reading some of the criticism of Elokobi i have to say he didnt do too badly. He struggled for pace against nani but kept valencia quiet when he came on.
You also have to realise that Elokobi was on his own on the left during most of the game, which is only going to make it harder for him deffensively. No disrespect to jones because he had a decent game, but he came in the middle far too often and narrowed our play. Even though Jarvis isnt a very deffensive winger, he gennerally stickes out wide and that would have helped Elokobi tremendously.
Ebanks Blake didnt do too much in the game, but to say he gave away the ball every time he got it is nonsense. From what i saw of him he managed to controll most of the balls that came to him really well, which is good news considering hes been out for a while.
Kightly looked a handfull at times, although he gave away the ball a few times, but you have to remember the lads been out for 6 months. I think he would have scored if he hadnt of been bought down in the first half.
overall not a bad performance, cant wait to see the likes of kightly and blake back at full pelt.

Just a comment from a long distance but you WEolves fans need to chill a little – you are in the Premiership – you are holding your own right now – you lost at Old Trafford to a team stacked with internationals some of whom are worth more than your squad – be grateful for even bieng in the same league and focus on staying where you belong and understand getting better in this league takes a number of seasons – look at Fulham.
You have a good squad with good players and almost no Premier experience on any area of the pitch – soak up the atmoushpere and enjoy the experience.

Some people are never satisfied!! Expected to be laughed off the pitch at Man U but I was really pleased with our performance. All the lads can hold their heads up high. I think it’s really exciting to have an excess of quality players to choose from and the committment that they are showing is great. It must be really boring supporting the top clubs and not having the excitement of expectation of are we going to win.

For any fan, it hurts to lose any game, against any team, in any competition or format. Let’s be realistic; how much further would we have progressed if we had beaten Man U? Not much further! This is all still a different new world for us and we shouldn’t expect the team to run before it can walk. As much as we’d love it to happen, we can’t expect the lads to win every time they kick a ball – not at this level, and if you had asked all Wolves fans at the start of the season whether they wanted to stay in the Prem or win the Carling Cup, I know what my answer would have been. It’s over and done with. Time to concentrate on the League again and rightly so. Getting into the Prem and staying there year in, year out, is harder and more prestigious than winning a Cup anyway.
One life, one club. Come on you Wolves.

54 – Wordsley. I’m an overseas-based Wolves fan yes, but born and bred there and an ex-season ticket holder. When back in Wolvo I get along to every game I can (home & away) and will be there in October so can at least get to the Pompey game, possibly Everton and also doing Eng v Belarus (even tho thats basically a friendly now). We get all 380 premier games live here so I can see all 38 Wolves games this season, would rather be there but this is the next best thing. I feel I can comment based on the above, hope you agree. And yes, get behind the team as you say, we will be OK in this league then. 16th or above for this season I think.
