As a retired Fire Officer with 25+ years service I can only agree with the flat owners. Fire escape routes must be kept clear of all obstructions.Just imagine a fire at night no lights thick smoke and panicing frightened people escaping along the corridor, one person falls over an obstruction or trips on a door map, they are quickly followed by other people behind them falling over them, the bodies soon pile up quickly, many people have died through crush injuries whilst trying to escape a fire, because someone has fallen over.

jeffb: We mostly have a carpet-sample type mat. May I suggest you have little experience of evacuation procedures in all properties and perhaps watch too many films (possibly based in Tettenhall at the Olympic Torch “they never go out”).
There have been fires, very rare in high-rise blocks and they’ve been dealt with quickly and efficiently. None caused or exacerbated by doormats. No doormats have impeded evacuation.

During a fire most of these flats have a “stay put” policy so who is going to fall over the mats anyway.

The main problem is the low rise flats where people sit on the landings and smoke, some communal areas have had weight lifting equipment, mopeds, tables, chairs and fridge-freezers blocking access.

door mats should be glued to the floors so noone can trip over them.
