Cancer patients face wait for treatment
Thursday 17th September 2009, 1:00PM BST.
Almost three quarters of cancer patients are waiting more than a month to be treated at West Midland hospitals following referral by family doctors, it emerged today.
Over three months, 547 people suspected of having the disease were sent to specialists, but only 157 were treated within 31 days.
Some patients waited up to 100 days for treatment, although not serious cases.
Revamped government guidelines aim to ensure people suspected of having cancer by their GP should wait no longer than a month.
The NHS Cancer Plan states: “Where patients wait longer, this should be because of the needs of the diagnostic process or their personal choice, not because of in-built delays in the system of care.”
Sue Hartley, director of performance for Walsall Manor Hospital, said: “The new cancer waits targets were introduced this year and we have been working hard to meet their requirements.
“Although we are meeting the majority of them and we are very pleased with our progress, further work is being undertaken to ensure that we meet them all.”
Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust spokeswoman Helen Eden said 90.4 per cent of cancer patients had been treated within the government’s separate 62-day target.
“We take cancer waiting times very seriously and recognise that it is important to diagnose and treat people who have cancer quickly, particularly because it is a disease that causes a lot of anxiety,” she said.

And Gordon Brown has the audacity to talk about the wonderful state of the NHS thanks to him! Ask anyone the vast majority will agree the service from the NHS is WORSE now than ever. Gordon PLEASE admit youself to a secure ward and call an election. We need change NOW!!

If they reduced the amount of administrators, accountants and other pen pushers and increased the number of front line staff we could get back to what the NHS is supposed to be about – providing health care. Gordon Brown – you’ve had your chance time for change.

My mate Dave had to wait over 6 months to see a specialist and by the time he did it was too late.
God bless you Dave.

What a shambles, we waste millions on pointless wars but can’t even care for our own properly. I know where my X is going at the next election, sorry Gordon you’d be better as a double act with SUBO Susan Boyle.

More and more vaccines, more and more additives and artificial sweeteners in our foods and drink, more and more processed foods in our diets, fluoride in our tap water, chem trails in our skies, more and more pesticides, is it any surprise more and more people and getting cancer in this day and age?
I agree with number 5, the information in Rick Simpsons documentary is life saving, watch it.

Agree with all feedbacks, but that’s once you have got to the hospital, ever been turned away wih a ‘Stomach Migrain’ which was BowelCancer…. now that still hurts knowing the young man had been seeing his GP for over 12 months and they said it was ‘stress’ sad to say he did not stand a chance once they decided to operate, GP and Sandwell leave a lot to be desired.. still heart breaaking now, hope patients in future who are really worried ‘demand’ a better service than is being given…
