Walsall Council spend despite cuts

Tuesday 15th September 2009, 10:55AM BST.

walsall-civic-council.jpgAround £50,000 has been spent renovating Walsall Council’s chamber – despite jobs being axed to save money.

It emerged that the cash has been spent on new microphones and screens in the main meeting room.

A full council meeting heard last night that job cuts and redundancy packages were costing the cash-strapped authority £600,000.

But council chiefs insist it will help save around £2.5million over the next three years.

The controlling Tory group was asked to reveal the cost of the re-organisation of staffing levels.

Leading councillors were also questioned on the projected costs for the next year. Councillor Chris Towe replied that the cost for workers leaving in 2009/10 would be £600,000.

But this would be offset by a saving of £2.5million. The figures were revealed after it emerged last week that a £5.6million overspend was predicted this year.

A pay freeze and cut in working hours are among the measures being considered to help claw back as much cash as possible.

Jobs have been shed, library hours cut and Walsall Illuminations scrapped as part of efforts to save money.

And the £50,000 outlay on new microphones and screens has been dubbed a “waste of money” and “insensitive.”

The Tories defended the spending last night.

Council leader Mike Bird said: “It is deeply embarrassing at a development control committee meeting when microphones don’t work, when talking about millions of pounds of investment.”

Since when did a few microphones and screens cost £50,000? Its another fine mess at Walsall Council. They’ll be digging the new ring road up soon!

If Cllr Bird thinks it’s embarrassing when a mic doesn’t work, fix the mic. That’s fine. Don’t spend £50,000 on fixing it for God’s sake!

I seriously, seriously hate Walsall Council at the moment. Not the people that work there (the ones who aren’t off sick) but the decision makers. They obviously cannot get their own house in order.

I visited Walsall Council House in the late 1990s and was shocked at the state of the building and furnishings. It was terrible and gave a very poor impression of the borough. Cllr Bird has a point.

This is the reason I don’t pay council tax, the council do not know how to spend money appropriately, they only know how to throw money away and spend it as fast as possible on the latest hi-tech gadgets or pathetic pieces of so called art that costs millions, only to be left abandoned and in serious need of repair after only a couple of weeks.

perhaps the microphone is for the X-factor party, that is being organised for the workers at christmas.

my son works there and all he has done is print off flyers, for this, for last three weeks.
Maybe MR Bird is doing Simon Cowell

£50,000 for microphones, yet when all the old electrical equipment went missing, including laptops, flat screens and projector. no one was investigated, they never lock up stuff, because its not them paying out of own money to replace it.

It’s cost that much because they just use a small network of suppliers. My wife was a purchaser there and when she complained, that her manager, had all his mates has suppliers, she was sacked.
How can u justify paying £1000for goods that available elsewhere for £100.
