Uni’s no show in ‘unfair’ leagues

Saturday 12th September 2009, 10:19AM BST.

Wolverhampton University has pulled out of national league tables, claiming they are unfair and misrepresentative.

The move follows successive appearances near the bottom of the annual educational guides.

The university does not appear in the latest list, due to be published tomorrow, which sees Warwick head the local league table, followed by Nottingham and Loughborough. Birmingham University comes fifth regionally, Keele seventh and Staffordshire 12th.

Wolverhampton University last appeared in a league table in June, in which its overall position had improved. But staff have vowed it was for the last time.

University spokeswoman Emma Kilvert said: “These tables disadvantage universities such as Wolverhampton and do not represent a fair picture of our strengths.” She said a recent audit by the Quality Assurance Agency found “broad confidence” in the university’s academic standards and more accurately represented its strengths.

Mary Fulton of the Sunday Times Guide, which is behind tomorrow’s league tables, said: “Wolverhampton University has not published its performance data and therefore cannot be included.”

Rich – Great, i’ve just enrolled on a course within the built environment! Very disappointing to hear this. As a paying ‘customer’ i will expect full value for my money. Without league tables there will be no indicators for future students.

Without league tables there will be no indicators for future students. Only one student gaining a first. Is this due to lack of staff input or student input? I will be interested to see the calibre of students enrolled this year.

Can Wolverhampton still consider itself a university if it’s not prepared to stand and be measured with the other 120+ ?

Many “students” who attend this University have arrived via the GNVQ or similar system. This is based mainly on coursework – copied from colleagues, plag1arized from the internet or from previous year’s students who have the solutions. Some successfully applying for courses are functionally illiterate and cannot be bothered even to use a spellchecher. If I were a youngster from Grammar School, I would be absolutely brassed off to know I had slogged hard to gain good “A” levels only to find I was sharing a classroom with morons who had gained entry by the above means.

I used to work there so I know they took the bottom of the pile. The English was very poor and I used to despair at those ‘students’. They should have remained a Polytechnic!

    When they were up...

When they are moving up they are upbeat about tables. With a reversal of direction they lose interest……..

At least it contributes to the government target of getting 50% of kids into uni. Who cares if they learn nothing useful, and squander three years that could have been better spent gaining experience in a real job.

I have been to Coventry and Wolverhampton…

The quality of students at the latter often leaves a lot to be desired.

As for the course..and probably all Msc type courses I was bored a lot especially in my final two years. I prefer practical skills over research any day.

my son goes to the Uni and I am very underwhelmed by it. One term last year he was actually getting less than 11 hours a week tuition. I think the most he had was about 16 and it wsn’t like he had a huge workload to do in his own time. When I enquired who i could speak to, to investigate whether thsi was offering “value for money” – I was told to contact the department head – is a Turkey going to vote for christmas then? – needless to say the department wouldn’t agree it should be offering more tuition for the fees they charge!

Its not really suprising is it? Wolverhampton creates a university just to obtain city status!!Its actually a glorified Polytechnic and nothing else!!
