Housing minister John Healey has given approval for work to begin on the first major council house development in the borough in 30 years.

Twenty-eight large family homes to house 111 people will be created in Bearwood Road, on the site of the former Bearwood House tower block.

Latest figures showed that 8,847 people were on the waiting list for a council home in Sandwell.

In total Sandwell Council wants to spend around £50 million on 1,000 homes and is preparing a bid for a second wave of building.
