September jobs around your home

September jobs around your homeCeiling roses can add a stylish finishing touch to any room – the lightweight, easy to fit polystyrene ones are just the job as all you need is adhesive.

Most ceiling roses, however, are a heavier fibrous plaster or a lighter hard celular resin/polyurethane.

Ask a professional to install the heavy solid plaster roses, which can cause great damage if they fall down.

Turn of the electricity at the mains before ensuring that the ceiling is flat and clean.

Find the joists using an electronic joist detector or by tapping the ceiling, which should enable you to hear where the joists are. If there aren’t any joists, use screws suitable for hollow walls.

Fix a polyurethane ceiling rose to the joists in four places, an equal distance apart so that the rose’s weight is evenly distributed.

To ensure a neat finish, the holes should be countersunk, and don’t forget to drill one in the middle of the rose for the light flex.

Apply generous amounts of a suitable adhesive to the back of the rose, pull the flex through and screw the rose into the joists.

Finally, wipe off any excess adhesive from the rose and then fill the screw holes and any gaps with flexible filler.

Restore the electrical connection and give the rose at least 24 hours to set before painting it. Some roses come ready for painting; others will need to be primed.

In your garden, September is a good time to plant daffodil bulbs and autumn onion sets, and lift and move evergreen shrubs that have outgrown their spaces.
