Wolves swoop for loan man Castillo

Monday 31st August 2009, 11:00AM BST.

segundo-castilloWolves have sealed their eighth summer signing with the season-long loan capture of Ecuadorian World Cup star Segundo Castillo.

And they are believed to be close to a similar deal for Austrian giant Stefan Maierhofer.

The club also have the option of signing Castillo from Red Star Belgrade on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old, who trained with Wolves last Thursday, has experience of the Premier League, having played eight games for Everton in a season-long loan last term.

Castillo also has World Cup experience, with 90 minutes against England in Ecuador’s 1-0 group defeat in Stuttgart in Germany 2006 one of 42 caps or his country. He has now flown out for qualifiers this week against Colombia and Bolivia.

Although primarily a defensive midfielder, the international star scored 11 goals in 66 games for home country side Espoli, before netting the same number in 112 outings for El National where he won titles in 2005 and 2006 to earn his move to Red Star that year.

There, alongside Wolves midfielder Nenad Milijas, he scored eight goals as Red Star secured the double in 2007. He has notched 15 in 48 league games in Belgrade.

Castillo joins Milijas, Marcus Hahnemann, Kevin Doyle, Greg Halford, Andrew Surman, Ronald Zubar and Michael Mancienne – also a season’s loan – as a new arrival.

The new signing said: “I’m very happy to be joining Wolves. It’s another chance for me to prove myself in England. I know Nenad very well and that makes it easier.”

Milijas believes Wolves have another quality addition with the capture of his former Red Star team-mate.

He said: “Segundo is strong in defence and good in the air from free kicks and corners.”

Maierhofer could be next in, after Wolves boss Mick McCarthy watched him play for Rapid Vienna against Villa in the Europa League last week.

The manager wants a target man and the 6ft 7ins front man fits the bill.

Chief executive Jez Moxey confirmed there could be more transfer activity before tomorrow’s 5pm deadline.

He added: “There could be lots of things happening – in and out – or nothing at all.”

Looking at the size of him he should be what we need.

Coz in the first half an hour on Saturday, when we were on the back foot we looked a bit vunerable against their height & strength.

Get this striker in & cover for left back & we’re sorted.

Hmmm! The jury’s out on this guy. Yes he has Prem experience but he didn’t cut the mustard last time around – I guess we can now rule out Ledley coming our way? Can’t help thinking we are taking a big gamble on Maierhoffer, who has no experience of English conditions so is not expected to make a sudden imapct. Jermaine Beckford would be less of a risk, is a natural goalscorer and would proabaly cost less. I hear that we are competing with West Ham for an even taller guy, Zigic from Valencia – guess we will have to wait and see on all of them.

Could be a good signing, need one of these new “reducer” types. For all Henry has started well, over 38 games i wouldn’t think he’d be up to the standard of a team wanting to stay up. The two big issues that no-one seems to mention on here are that we are in desperate need of a left back, and that Milijas is the new Silas, looks woefully off the pace. I’m sure Peter Lorimer could come and ping a few from 25 yards. He had a bright 5 mins against West Ham. Need to pick up points while we’ve got this easier run of games.

Am I the only person worried by the potential signing of Maierhofer. In my opinion we’re chasing his signing so that Halfords long throws will have a target. And judging by Halfords performance on Saturday his throws are the only reason for his starting birth.

Having Maierhofer in the team will just encourage the defenders to resort to booting the ball up the field which will be easy pickings for experienced Prem defenders. And its awful to watch and wasn’t working in the second half of last season against inferior Champ defenders.

Stoke seem to score from a Delap long throw once per match. We’ll probably do so once per season but Mick will see this as justification for persisting with it. And that in itself is a joke. Ain’t he got any initiative of his own. See’s it work for Stoke so tries to copy it to the letter.

And all the people giving Hennessey stick for Hulls goal are idiots as well. He gets on my nerves because he hesitates and doesn’t come for balls pumped high into the box. But on Saturday he was beaten by a brilliant cross. Hunt got the ball up and over him in such a short distance. If anything the blame lies with Mr Halford again who let Hunt breeze past him and didn’t even try to recover and block the cross. And as for the defenders behind Hennessey – you try defending a ball like that with an inrushing attacker. It was a fantastic cross. End of.

See what your trying to say, but a target man doesn’t necessarily mean Route one. As long as Jarvis can start hitting the target with his crosses (Kightly back too) then think back to the Waggy/Dougan/Richards days. Centres rain in, MichealMyershoff knocks it down to SEB and/or Doyle and it’s a great way of opening up even the best defences. Sam not ready yet, or maybe I’m being a bit unfair.

The market remains open and we have, and will continue to use it just like every other club. Despite all the championship managers on here, we were never going to sign Michael Owen, we have spent, considering signing on fees etc, beyond 20mill and stuck to the philosophy and principles the club put in place three years ago, and has seen us return to the Prem.
