Byfield calls for Saddlers response
Monday 31st August 2009, 10:55AM BST.
Walsall signing Darren Byfield has called for his new team-mates to rediscover their confidence and ability.
The striker made his Banks’s Stadium return in the goalless stalemate with Gillingham on Saturday, as the Saddlers extended their winless run to five games in front of just 3,331 fans.
It was Walsall’s lowest league attendance since 3,319 turned out to see the 1-1 draw against Colchester in the third tier on 20 October 1998.
Byfield, who returned to the club after signing a five-month deal on Friday, believes his colleagues need belief.
He said: “Everyone needs to believe in themselves. The gaffer and Martin O’Connor spoke to them at half-time.
“They know about the ability the lads have – it’s about instilling that in them and going forward.
“It’s a case of when one goes in and we get the three points the lads will be very confident.
“I’ve only trained a couple of days, but it’s about getting a couple of wins and confidence will be sky-high, then we’ll see a decent Walsall side.”
The 32-year-old’s deal could be extended until the end of the season and he has vowed to give his all to the cause.
He said: “You can’t relax in this profession, you’ve got to be at it every minute of every game. Everyone has to impress.”

Nice to see you back Darren (tongue in cheek), didn’t anyone else want you???

Aren’t all these players fantastic players in words? Pity it’s on the pitch where it matters (and constantly fails to live up to the promises).
Last week we had Sam Parking Space promising to be our goal saviour this season. Shame then that I, sitting in the stand, got closer to the goal than concrete boots.

ANY IDEA WHY WE HAVE REPLACED A LAZY FORWARD WITH LOTS OF ABILITY WITH A EVEN MORE LAZY FORWARD WITH FAR LESS ABILITY????

Got to change things round.
Give Nicholls and Weston a game tonight.
Till struggling to get into game, don’t know whether CH has told him he must stay out wide?
Westlake done well in defence, but doesn’t get forward and cross the ball as well as Weston.
3.Tinned – Love the Sam Parkin’ Space gag!
Why have we signed Byfield if he isn’t match fit, he goes on about being a professional, well what has he been doing in pre-season, surely he should have kept sharp so he could get signed?
(Oh sorry of course, we won’t have thought of that! We will have just signed him cos he’s been here before (ala Ricketts) and scored at the Millennium………did anyone check his fitness?)
Well throw him in tonight and make him run!!!!!!
