Bednar opens heart on drugs shame
Monday 31st August 2009, 10:58AM BST.
Returning Albion star Roman Bednar has opened his heart on his drugs shame and pledged to prove he is a “good person.”
The Baggies striker, who scored twice in a 2-2 draw on his return to League action at Sheffield United, admitted he feared a possible backlash from fans after he admitted possessing and using cocaine.
But supporters have welcomed the forward back from his three-month ban and Bednar has promised to repay them with his actions and goals.
He said: “You always wonder how people will react to you, when you do stupid things or make mistakes.
“But I don’t think I am a really bad person, although if I say that people will laugh.
“They will think that a good person wouldn’t do what I did, but I think I am a good person. I will show it with my behaviour and on the pitch.
“That is the most important think and that’s how I will prove myself. I don’t really want to talk about how I feel or what I expected from people, this is how it is and I am very grateful.
“I was a bit scared at first because you never know how people will react, but I was hoping that they would stick with me and they really have.
“That’s just great and I thank them for it.”
Bednar admitted he was unsure about his Baggies future, after the Sunday newspaper sting that caught him buying drugs outside his home.
But he joked that the stress of the police and FA investigations helped him stay in shape during his enforced lay-off.
The forward said: “I did a bit of running and because of stress you don’t get fat.
“It’s true, I ate dumplings every day and I didn’t get fat, as it wasn’t an easy time because of what I did.
“I couldn’t even go for a holiday. I was stuck in one place just wondering, thinking and waiting for hearings and the police.
“It wasn’t easy and I didn’t really want to work. My mind wasn’t on it and I didn’t know what was going to happen.
“I know what I did and it wasn’t up to me whether I would be here or not.
“But people stuck with me and that was really important.”

Might have expected him to say how it happened, how long he had been into drugs and what he might do in the future. Hardly “Opened his heart” just being thankful he still got a job.

Roman, I wasn’t happy with what you did, but you have apologised to everyone and I believe you wholeheartedly when you say that you are sorry.
Also the drugs work that you have said that you are going to do, to try and stop anyone else making the same mistake, is excellent news and I applaud you for making that commitment
I can imagine the strain that you and you family have been under during the past few months, it couldn’t have been very nice and it must have been extremely stressful. But one thing that it has shown is your strength of character.
So don’t keep letting it get to you. It’s time to forgive and forget and get on with your life.
This is a new chapter in your life, all that I can say now is just forget what has happened get on with your life now and enjoy it. Therefore all the best Roman,
Baggie68,

Regardless of how Bednar got into the drugs scene, what is evident is that the newspapers, quite rightly in my view, act as the public guardian for the public heroes. Yes, it’s great being famous and highly paid, but with it comes a duty to your adoring followers, a moral duty. The newspaper staff also have to eat, they know what sells, SCANDAL and Public Heroes. ‘Twas ever thus. Put both together and every hack in the country wants a piece of the action. The Beckhams have made millions and try also to be squeaky clean. So they should. Kids are watching too besides adults. Betcha Roman won’t risk it again while he’s still working in the public eye and if he’s any sense, he’ll not risk it again ever.
