Wolves 1 Hull 1 – Verdict
Saturday 29th August 2009, 5:30PM BST.
Wolves could not find the second goal their play warranted and were forced to settle for a point against Hull at Molineux.
Mick McCarthy’s men were forced onto the backfoot from as early as the third minute, when Geovanni was on hand to bundle in Stephen Hunt’s choice cross, but Richard Stearman equalised 44 seconds after the restart to earn a point.
The right-back crept round the Hull defence to clip in Jody Craddock’s head-on from Michael Mancienne’s centre circle free-kick.
And Wolves had plenty of chances to win the game after that, with Andy Keogh the biggest culprit in heading and pulling wide two excellent play through’s from George Elokobi.
In fact, the home side had ample opportunity to equalise in the first-half as well, with Keogh again fluffing his lines from Greg Halford’s free-kick and then when his drive was saved by goalkeeper Boaz Myhill.
Phil Brown’s side also had defender Michael Turner to thank in the 80th minute, when he somehow managed to clear Kevin Doyle’s point-back effort off the line.
Sub Sam Vokes – on for Keogh – also should have won it at the death, but headed Matt Jarvis’ cross wide.

Disappointing result though in many ways expected.
Wolves need to win these type of games. Two points lost.

One word – Rubbish.

Excellent second half but missed gilt edged chances are likely to cost us dear! We cannot afford to fluff chances like keogh did today but can’t give the lad too much grief cos he has been excellent this season!
Doyle looked fantastic and the prospect of having him and SEB up front is really exciting!
Two points dropped but every point is valuable and I’m really excited that we don’t look out of our depth in this league! Onward and upward!

Good result. Have not seen it yet, its being repeated at midnight east coast for all the Wolves fans in the US (on Setanta).
Spurs did us a favour to beat Blues.
Respectable position after 4 games.

Lots of chances but not being put away. This cannot continue.
Is reducing the pitch to the size of a tennis court really wise? We play with wide players, who are will not have chance to operate before they are jumped on, just so that long-throws are easier?
Could not get there today, sounds like we will need the luck as the chances are coming.
For those who said we would not hack it I believe we are doing well, maybe need a little more experience but as it goes I do not think anyone should be upset with the start.
However it s the finish we need so keep going and back these guys to the end.

Henry and Doyle were top class, Wolves should of won and spurred a host of chances including that chance right at the end.
They will have confidence going into the next game
Report abuse
A game we might have won but one where if offered the draw at half time we would have settled for.
As always under the MM reign though we still need to bring in a left full back worthy of the name. Today at times Hunt had 20 yards radius of space around him. Maybe we can move Mancienne to LB once Foley recovers and put Steers back to central defence.
1 point is not enough from home games like this – Keogh proved again that he is not good enough, we need players who can take chances at this level.
Ebanks and Doyle to start together against Blackburn.
The kind of game we need to win but another demonstration that there are no easy games at this level. Overall the four games have been encouraging and lets not forget the start we made last time when we were at this level when we were conceding 4 or 5 goals a game. There is more to come from Milijas and I think Zubar and Surman will also play their part. Most of all look forward to SEB and Kightly returning.

Need 2 make our chances count! Kevin doyle looked really good 2day. Least we got a point, although we should have had all three! Onto the next game to try and get the full three points. Cmon wolves :)

We looked shell shocked for large parts of the first half ,but credit to them for the much better second half showing.
In the end we were unlucky not to win.But we clearly need some more quality before the transfer deadline. We do not want another season when we make a profit but get relegated.
Apart from one howler of a backpass, I thought Mancienne was excellent. Henry also. Doyle also looked dangerous. First half we were poor, but took the game to them in the second. Unfortunately, there were too many basic mistakes at crucial times. Also, Hull were constantly time-wasting to slow us down. Pity Sam was not given more than 3 minutes. We will hammer them at the KC, no problem.
Frustrating result, in my view Hull were rubbish, I’ll be surprised if we see a worse team this season, debatable to say Stoke and the Birmingham. Anyway our visitors today played out for draw in the end and we had chances to win this game. Hopefully we won’t be looking back on this fixture thinking 2 points dropped, Doyle looks a quality player, and Mancienne stood out by a mile, he was the only one looking comfortable on the ball in our bad start.
Stearman also had a good game and nothing much got passed big George. Perhaps if Vokes was brought on earlier he might have got up to the pace of the game too take that header.
However we can’t be giving the visiting teams’ early goal leads especially the better crop of the premier league. But again 4 points from the opening 4 games, that’s a better start to the last time around. If our young players improve as the games go on we might be okay. 17 spot will do.

What’s rubbish??? You? The team? The club? The fans? The ref? What???
We were poor today for 30 mins but then battered them for the rest of the game & should have won comfortably.
And yet again we are left to rue missed chances which is hardly surprising with all the injuries to our fire power.
Manncienne, Henry & Doyle(M.O.M) were outstanding today.
If we keep playing like this, with a couple of new additions & our walking wounded returning we will be fine.
Mid table finish!!!

went to match today ,not bad game, deserved more than a point in the end for a good second half performance.my only concern is jarvis.he does the hard job of getting the pass making a run ,put just not putting a quality cross over.4 games now and still not delivering the perfect ball.think its about time surman had a chance.henno still needs to command area ,i thought he was at fault for goal.any cross that passes your 6 yard box much be claimed by keeper.good 2 week break for players now plus a chance for injured player to get fit.heard on grape vine a player was at wolves on wed having a medical ,not sure on name but def foreign watch this space.

Should have won by at least 2 clear goals.
Jarvis, Halford, Milijas cannot cut the mustard.
Keough is worth his place as a 100% annoying irritant to the opposition.
Hennesey should have got a hand on Hull’s cross that opened the scoring, but it should not have got to that stage. I expected us to give the high-tempo start, but Hull had done their homework.
Golden missed chances cost us 3 points – very disappointing. At the end of the season, we may look back on this game and rue its chances.
Edwards should have replaced a tired and inspiration-less Milijas. He really needs to get sorted or sit on the bench.
If there are no quality players coming in before Tuesday, I will blame the management and owner because this will be a very difficult and relentless season and they always knew it.
As supporters, we must do our bit, but we can only do so much!

Does anyone else think that Hennesey should have done better for Hull’s goal. It just seems time and time again he doesn’t command his area.

No 2 were you actually at the game? It was a fairly poor first half but overall we dominated and should have won the game. A good performance second half but wasted chances cost us the game. We dither too much when we have shooting chances and that really needs addressing. I thought Mancienne was outstanding. Shame he is only on loan. The future looks bright. Bit hacked off that the Fulham game has been put back to the Sunday!

Two points lost in my view but we did enough to win but again lacked a cutting edge in front of goal cannot fault the endeavour Keogh brings week in week out but he is not the one we want the half chance’s falling to hasn’t the killer instinct or confidence to put these chances away I am sure if they fell to Doyle or SEB then I am sure they would put them away giving us a better chance of winning these types of games. Overall an encouraging performance.
Too many chances were wasted today, and Hull were second class especially during the second half. The conceded goal was soft, with woeful defending all round. But I’m still optimistic, and will keep my torch shining!

I would suggests sending videos of Ashravin’s striking abilities to Keogh. Sadly, he can’t even muster a decent powerful shot at goal nad it’s matches liket his that we need to win to keep abreast in the league.
After yesterday’s match and with MM playing Jarvis instead of bringing Surman, i guess the only way to improve is to bring in the Rapid striker and the CM Castillo if we are in anyway serious of building up the team.
MM pls heed the calls! The fans have suffered enough.
Just look at the amount of chances we had?
Doyle was decent upfront but sure needs a big man to partner him. Soory guys,Not Keogh.
Jarvis ,Henry Wayne and Keogh are just fringe players to me.
God helps us when Chelski comes around.

4 games in and all ive read so far is “hard luck stories!” lets just be honest,..that is all were going to have all season judging by the games ive watched so far(all of them),…as ive said before and it really gets me angry when i look over and see smug Moxey sitting by Morgan,..that the promise, but lack of investment will see us struggle all season. …sorry but were punching above our weight at the moment.

My comment- Keogh, gives 100%, has undoubted talent but is not a striker! he had several chances which meant 1 point instead of 3.
I hope to see Doyle and SEB together and then the points will increase.
I think that reducing the pitch size has turned out to be an “own goal”. The flowing style of football that we played last season just cannot happen, so why bother with wingers?
Just so that throw-ins can reach the penalty area? We haven’t had a chance yet from such a long throw-in!
No disrespect to Hull but we should be putting teams like this to the sword – Keogh on for too long – we needed to bring on Vokes for longer than a few minutes towards the end of the game
Keogh does alot of running but as a striker really needs to score more often than he does Possession and effort isnt enough to win games – clinical finishing does
Cudda wudda shudda But didnt – Hopefully a couple of quality additions are en route Molineux – we need these additions imv before the Jan window
Up the Wolves!

Jermaine Beckford in NOW NOW NOW before the lack of goals come to seriously haunt us, he would seriously shake Doyle and Keogh up. Our inability to win our home games so far, particularly Hull is very worrying even at this early stage. It may come to the point when we play bigger opposition like Man City to say oh, we played well but we still lost – that’s no good! We need to try and get something from every game, if Burnley can do it so can we.
Get Ledley in also and we can all relax Mick. Deeply worrying that we seem to have been linked with no one other than Harper.
Fight, fight wherever you may be.

I think we all knew that this was going to be a tough season with questions being asked of our young squad and would they make the grade? Well most of them have. The effort and industry of keogh has only been undone by his shots to goals ratio. Now how long before we have to replace the effort with an end product.
I think Bob wolf, though harsh with his critisism of keogh, is acually correct about his lack of prowess in front of goal.
Hopefully the performances and work rate will continue throughout the season but with the addition of quality finishing soon.
I’m sure Mick has the answer.
Keep the faith.

IN defence of Hennessey, wasn’t he supposed to be covering his near post and the looped cross was a good one,out of his reach. Although when I saw it live I did originally think the keeper was to blame. Equally Halford got skinned and Mancienne, I believe, was beaten at the far post. Mancienne played very well and I am sure his pace has saved us on many occasions, but he does have a weakness in the air in our box.Fot the first 20 minutes Hull were pumping a lot of high balls up to Mancienne, to play on this weakness.Halford’s first touch is not Prem standard, but he gave us an outlet by winning the ball in the air everytime. But we need someone who can win the ball in our opponents penalty box.The clock is ticking sort it out Jez,no excuses this time.

Henessey is always blamed for not taking crosses. For me, too many defenders get in front of Hennessey .If they are in that position, they should be heading the ball away. Also please note, when these type of goals a scored, we never have a defender covering the line, it happened again against Hull. It was Stearman’s side again!
The forwards got a goal and one goal will win a match and we only made a draw. Players are still standing and watching their colleagues play, yes Keogh does miss chances but he always suports players with the ball, what other players are doing that? Several players should be charged admission. Yes Jarvis does not always deliver, but who is there to help him out? It is a team game. Who ever plays, they have to have the ball passed to them when they want it, not when the player in posession wants to give it to them.
Again Hennessey’s clearances did not go to the Wolves players. He kicks the ball up field, the opposition collect it and it is back in the Wolves’ half, come on Wayne, start to watch other goal keepers start the attack from their own six yard box.

Hennessey has never commanded his box like Murray did. Pity cause he’d have stopped hulls goal if he did. Elecobi / Mancienne to choose for MOM After Hulls goal they were amazing. Doyle looked really sharp and with SEB they gonna scare the life out of defences. But the problem I can see is how we gonna get the ball to them? Apart from Elecobi n Jarvo on the left wing there was very little of quality coming from anywhere else. Need big chris back or a Big Proven Scorer. Millijas passes were sweet but he’s still not on the pace. got caught with the ball too many times.
12th man was scarily quieter than usual ? Think we we’re all living on our nerves

Before the season started, I decided to compile my own league table based on the following criteria:
Against the top five, expect to get no points.
Against the next five (Villa, Spurs, West Ham, Everton and Fulham), expect to get one point at home, none away
From the remaining 10 teams, expect to get 2 points at home and 1 point away.
In total, the sides in the bottom 10 list are targeting 32 points by my calculations – and 36 points should be enough to make you safe from relegation in reality – so the comparison isn’t miles away. This way, it kind of negates the timing of when you play the big clubs.
What it shows so far, is that we’re bang on track with what we should have expected, dropping a point against West Ham, gaining 2 points away at Wigan and dropping a point yesterday.
Of the bottom 10, the table currently stands as follows:
Burnley +4
Stoke +2
Sunderland +2
Wolves 0
Hull 0
Birmingham 0
Wigan 0
Blackburn -1
Portsmouth -2
Bolton -3

In defence of Jarvis, at least we have a player who can take the ball from our half deep into the oppositions to relieve the pressure. Yes, admit the final ball at present is poor but should improve. Compare his runs with the likes of Keogh, Halford, Henry who cointinually turn on the ball. No criticism of them because they have all started well.
Not sure of elokobi, a bit like Ward, pulls out the spectacular because he lacks basic defending skills e.g. poor positioning and first touch.
Like the plan B with the long throw but it started to appear a bit more of plan A yesterday?

I think some of you seem to forget it’s only the start of the season, your already critisising the players???!!!!! All of our squad haven’t experienced the Premier League before, and I personally think we have been extremely well. 4 points is not bad at all, and at this stage last time we were in the prem, I don’t even think we had any points on the board? And all of you critisising Keogh, can you remember when he scored the winner at Wigan? Gave us our first win this season and our first ever away win at Premier League level? However, I thought we played well yesterday, deserved the win. Mancienne was absolutely breathtaking at times and Doyle looked dangerous throughout.

I was pretty impressed by our performance, albeit against one of the most impotent teams in the league. They were well marshalled by Turner and Boateng. I thought we reverted to long balls too early, and by turning over possession so easily we never quite built up enough pressure or mommentum.
My one gripe was also the 12th man! I really don’t like the away fans taking over the south bank. NOT because we lose the voice of the south bank, but because of the way they stand up all the bleedin time, spout their moronic abuse at everything and anything, swear profusely, and spoil most of the enjoyment for the rest of us who wish to support our team a little more maturely!

Why must we always point the finger at the GK? I completely agree with 39 & 40. They are spot on. Week in week out people come on here and bash the lad, however no one ever questions why the ball got there in the first place. Why was hunt allowed time to pick out the cross, why was some one like Geovanni allowed to head the ball in so easily? (His heading ability has been questioned on MOTD a number of times.) Then we need to start asking why werent the chances we had put away rather then squandered?
The lad is a talent and i think people need to support him rather then always blame him first…Should he be called Scapegoat instead?
Let get behind ALL players rather then always come on here and blame them.

The good thing about this game was that we managed to come back from a goal down. The downside was a failure to convert chances, in the championship chances come more often and missing a few doesn’t matter so much. The difference between the top and the bottom teams at this level is the ability to convert chances and half chances. It was aparent in the pre-season that we had trouble scoring and that will be our downfall if it continues. Lets hope that when Doyle has shook off his rustyness he starts putting the chances away. I would have took 4 points fron 4 games before the season started though.

Actually 1 point per game is not relegation form. In 4 of the last 5 seasons, 38 points is comfortable survival. The year when that wasn’t the case was 2007 when Sheff U went down on goal difference. The days of needing 40 points are gone – probably because the gulf between top and bottom has grown.
51. seattlebaggy
Wolves are 13th. That would be an excellent finish for us. Our next 4 games are against sides who are 18th, 15th, 9th and 20th. Every chance of maintaining mid-table.
If you were actually paying attention you might have noticed that Doyle hasn’t been fit, and we’re missing SEB, Kites and Looms, too. The jury is out on whether our strike force is good enough – but even limping along has us in mid-table, so the signs are good.

Baggies fan here. My opinion for what it’s worth. The doom and gloom merchants are as wide of the mark as the ones who think you’re doing okay. You can’t judge this early in the season. Just look at Hull last year, November, talking about Champions League, April fighting to stay up. At the end of the day it’s a scrap at the bottom and the fighters usually stay up. Have you got the bottle? Time will tell.

Writing ‘FACTS’ at the start of your message doesn’t turn your opinions into actual facts.
In my opinion, your first ‘fact’ is nonsense. Most fans here just thought our start would enable us to get some points on the board – and we have – as opposed to say Portsmouth and Bolton, or us in 03-04. And are you really comparing us to Man U ? Please get some perspective.
Plus:
No-one claims that Keogh is a natural goal-scorer, but given how many goals we scored last year, you might give Mick some credit for knowing what he’s doing. Do you not think that this year’s slow start might just have something to do with the injuries to Iwelumo, Kightly, SEB and Doyle ?
Hennessey doesn’t look like a fool when he comes for the ball. In fact when he comes for the ball he looks fine. The problem is that he doesn’t do it often enough. If he was partially to blame for Hull’s goal on Saturday, then it should be shared with the rest of the defence who let both Hunt and Geovanni do their thing unimpeded.
And finally, Wolves don’t always start poorly under Mick. As often as not, we start really well. Where were you at the start of last season when we blew teams away in the first-half ?
There you go. Opinions. We’ve all got them.

Keogh is really an Alan Smith in the making-he is not a clinical finisher, but can still offer a lot-play him deeper.

In my opinion, and I have one like every one else, tomorrow will decide our fate. With the team as it is at this minute we will not score enough goals to keep us in the Prem.Tomorrow we need some inspiration from the top ,to sign somone who will turn the chances into goals.

68 you must be joking he cannot tackle is too light weight and his strike rate is poor for a forward even last year it was pathetic. But MM thinks otherwise. However he is than Smith who hasn’t scored for 2 years. He is not good enough for the premier league.
