Roadworks for new superstore to begin
Saturday 29th August 2009, 11:30AM BST.
Months of roadworks paving the way for the creation of a new Sainsbury’s supermarket in a South Staffordshire village begin next week, developers said today.
Workers will be moving into busy Bridgnorth Road, Wombourne, on Tuesday to make improvements to the junction with Heath Mill Road industrial estate. The work, which is expected to continue until the end of the year, will be carried out in preparation for the opening of the village’s new Sainsbury’s store on a former factory site.
As part of the road project, workers will be carrying out road alignment and resurfacing works and eventually installing traffic lights.
It is hoped the project will be finished before the Christmas holidays, ready for the supermarket to open its doors in spring next year.
Three-way traffic control signals will be in place to manage the flow of vehicles during the roadworks.
The temporary signals will only be operated Monday to Friday during off-peak hours between 9.15am to 4pm.
Sainsbury’s project manager, Coryn Martin, said: “We are very pleased to be starting work on the road junction, which shows that the development is progressing smoothly and on time.
“Sainsbury’s contractors will be working to a strict code of practice and that disruption will be kept to an absolute minimum at all times.”
A bus hopper service will be laid on to shuttle customers between Sainsbury’s and the centre of Wombourne village.
