The wife of a Black Country soldier who was killed in Afghanistan is planning to run the London Marathon to help raise funds for other war widows.

Rachel Horne is applying to take part in the race next April to help other widows to get away on holidays or short breaks.

Her 27-year-old husband Jonathan, known as Jay, died after an explosion in Helmand province on July 10 while carrying a wounded comrade.

Rachel, aged 25, of Tipton, was taken away on a short break to Whitby, North Yorkshire, with others earlier this month by a small group set up by the Army to help relatives of fallen soldiers.

“It was a lovely break and I would like to show my support for what is a great idea,” she said.

“It is not a registered charity yet and needs all the support it can get.

“If I am given a place, then I’ll start training.”

Cpl Horne’s mother, Jane Whitehouse, of Delves, Walsall, said: “We will all be there to give Rachel support if she does get a place.”

Some of Cpl Horne’s family will be attending a fundraiser at The Orchard pub, Thorncroft Way, Yew Tree estate, near West Bromwich, tomorrow from midday to 9pm. Live music, food, raffles, stalls and a bouncy castle are among the attractions.
