Kightly close to comeback

Saturday 29th August 2009, 11:30AM BST.

STOCK 7 GD 23Injury-troubled Michael Kightly is on course to make his Premier League bow after the two-week international break.

The England Under-21 winger, desperate to complete his impressive jump from Non-League football to the top flight, is set to return to training with the first team squad next week.

And, if all goes well while the domestic programme gives way to the World Cup qualifying schedule over the next fortnight, Kightly is hoping to be back in manager Mick McCarthy’s plans for the September 12 clash at Blackburn Rovers, Wolves’ first game back after the break.

The former Grays midfielder, regarded as one of McCarthy’s finest signings in his three years at Wolves, has learned from his past impatience to get back into action and has vowed not to return until he is fully recovered from the “niggles” that followed his absence because of a broken foot suffered in behind-closed-doors game with Shrewsbury in March.

“It has been frustrating but at the end of the day you’ve got to look at the bigger picture,” says Kightly.

“The gaffer pulled me just before the start of the season and told me he wanted me fully fit for most of the season.

“And by that he means 100 per cent fit for all the games I play rather than trying to get away with being 80 per cent fit.

“No disrespect to the Championship, but you can perhaps sometimes get away with not being right at your best. But if I want to have any sort of impact in the Premier League I’ve got to be at 100 per cent every time I step out there.

“That’s not just about me and my own performance but, more importantly, the team.

“It’s not going to do anyone any favours if I’m not having the impact I would like.”

Wolves’ September programme begins at Blackburn and is followed by a home game against Fulham.

And Kightly is keeping his fingers crossed he will be on McCarthy’s team sheet by then.

He added: “Blackburn is a nice goal to be able to set myself. It all depends on how training goes, whether I feel good and then it’s up to the gaffer whether he thinks I’m looking good enough to be involved.

“Hopefully if I come through I’ll be in with a shout maybe of being on the bench but as I say that’s all up to the gaffer.

“I’ve done some double sessions and trained with the reserves yesterday and again today.

“If all goes well then hopefully I’ll be ready to train with the first team next week.

“For me it’s good that there’s now a two-week break, it’s come at the right time. It gives me the chance to get another good couple of weeks under my belt.”

I well remember our last great winger Waggy getting injured badly with his knee and even for those days was rushed back to play at home against Cov when just before half-time he was hit full bloodied clearance at the back of the said knee he was then out for a very long time and let me tell you Wolves suffered so as much as Kites wants to return and as much as we want him back PRUDENCE

Be great to have Kites back of course but we still need an impact player like Ledley in midfield. Also Beckford would shake our attacking corps up, our lack of goals from chances created in the Prem. is becoming a major problem. All a bit worrying that we appear to have been linked with no one!

It’s going to interesting to see how Mick slips Kites back in once he if fully fit- in alot of our home games I think Mick is going to go for it at 4-4-2, with his posittion obvious, but for some away games, I think Kits could cause havoc playing a free role. Just sharing a thought as I had nothing better to do.
