£174m hospital building filling the skyline
Saturday 29th August 2009, 11:30AM BST.
Futuristic glass frontages have appeared on the Walsall skyline as the town’s new £174 million Manor Hospital hospital takes shape.
These pictures show the latest stage of development at the Moat Road site, where the new landmark buildings are expected to open next year.
The revamped site will have a new wing for women’s and children’s services, a treatment centre and a training complex for the teaching of hospital staff.
Bosses say first class facilities for patients and staff will be created inside the new hospital, with landscaped grounds outside.
David Lawson, commercial director for the hospital said: “There are significant visible changes on site each and every day now.
“As we move into autumn, the roofing will be finished and the escalators installed. Pathology lab furniture including benches and cupboards will be arriving and the internal decorating plus electrical duct and pipe work will continue.
“In patient areas, the ensuite facilities will be installed and around the whole site, work on the staff, patient and visitor lifts will be completed.
“At the end of September, the final crane will be removed. The biggest of the three that has dominated Walsall’s skyline for a number of months, will be dismantled.
“Hospital teams are going on site visits which gives them an insight into how the new buildings will look, which is helping to further build on the excitement that the Manor’s new hospital is nearly here.
“It is just nine months, 257 days until the first group of staff move into the purpose-built facilities and just 12 months until the buildings are fully occupied.
“From May, some staff, patients and visitors will start benefiting from what promises to be a new hospital for Walsall with first class facilities.”
