Reprieve baths plea by Labour MPs

Friday 28th August 2009, 11:30AM BST.

coseleybathsLabour MPs have increased the pressure on Dudley Council over condemned Coseley Baths, issuing an 11th hour plea to the Conservative council leader to save the pool.

In a letter to Councillor Anne Millward, Dudley North’s Ian Austin and Pat McFadden, MP for Wolverhampton South East, say they cannot stress strongly enough how unpopular this decision is and offer their full backing to residents. “We share their view that the baths should not close and are asking the council to think again,” the letter to the council said.

“We appreciate that the council may consider this an issue that is already decided, but the strength of opinion in the local community and the fantastic campaign run by local people show how much the baths are valued by the community in Coseley and further afield.”

It is an MP’s job to stand up for local people, they add.

The two MPs list a number of flaws they perceive in the council’s argument for closing the pool in Pear Tree Lane.

The authority says the building needs £2 million of repairs including £1 million of urgent work to make the roof safe.

Mr McFadden and Mr Austin cite the six-figure bill for demolition as comparable to the cost of the roof repairs.

They invite Councillor Millward to consider bidding for a share of £25 million Government cash under the Free Swimming Capital Modernisation Programme.

The council says it may enter the scheme, but Coseley Baths would be omitted from any application and a new leisure centre planned in Bilston, Wolverhampton, will meet residents’ needs.

Mr McFadden and Mr Austin ask why residents of Coseley, who pay their council tax to Dudley, should be advised they have to use facilities provided by another authority.

Dudley Council’s deputy leader, Councillor Les Jones, said today: “Nothing has changed that would alter the position on closure, which is scheduled for Monday, August 31.”

Councillor Millward was unavailable for comment.

If Ian Austin and Pat Mcfadden can secure for Dudley’s residents the kind of central funding that the Government gives Labour-controlled Sandwell for instance (an extra £60 million per annum), then I’m sure Dudley Council will happily build a new baths for their electors in Coseley.

Incidentally, your readers might care to know that the amount of money that Mr Austin’s pal, the Prime Minister, is having to borrow this year to finance this government’s reckless decade-long spending spree (£180,000,000,000) is enough to build a new primary school, a new swimming baths and a new hospital in every town in Britain – including Coseley – and still have enough money left over to offer every council taxpayer in the land a rebate on their bill.

But hey, guys, it’s only public money!

    Where there`s life there`s hope.
We thought this too in Brierley Hill, even till the last day.
    But Dudley is Dudley.
The argument is that it has got too big to serve the needs of its local communities.
Which is a good reason for going back to what it was like before.
The Metropolitan borough system in the Black Country has caused too many short circuits and absorbtion into Birmingham would be worse.
I think our MPs should be campaigning quite simply for the end of Dudley Metropolitan as it exists. And basing the area on smaller towns. As before.
Even if nobody agrees with me I am entitled still to my opinions.

Ray says its only public money…and so it is…but it is money that can go towards retaining a facility that provides exercise and gives young people somewhere to go…the costs of keeping the facility must be measured against the cost of obesity to the NHS, and the cost of increasing street crime instead of channelling youthful exuberance into sport. As this penny pinching council continues in its destructive path we will no doubt see other facilities closed or presented to their friends in the private sector. But its strange how we never heard “hey its only public money!” when the Dudley councillors awarded themselves a 25% pay rise this year!!!

The MPs say the £1,000,000 cost of roof repairs is “comparable” to the six-figure sum for demolition.

No wonder the country’s finances are in such a mess!
