Smikle eyes another goal-den season
Thursday 27th August 2009, 8:45AM BST.
Kidderminster attacker Brian Smikle admits Harriers’ prospective new attacking system will suit him down to the ground – as he is looking for double figures again this season.
The wide man got 10 goals going forward last season in a breakthrough campaign for the former Albion youngster, who was rewarded with a new one-year deal in the summer.
And Smikle got off the mark for 2009/10 in Saturday’s 3-1 win at Grays, forming part of an attacking trio that saw the left-winger and David McDermott on the other flank supporting lone striker Matthew Barnes-Homer.
Now manager Mark Yates has to decide whether to stick with a winning team and formation for Saturday’s visit of Altrincham, or bring fit-again forward Robbie Matthews into the side.
Smikle will have his eye for goal either way, as he looks to better last term’s tally.
He said: “I thought I had a great season last season, so I am just trying to carry on from that with goals and performances.
“Goals change games but they also change players as well. Last season definitely opened up my perspective on the game and my final ball has improved as well.
“I just think to myself that scoring or getting an assist is my main aim. I’d like to pass the ten goals I got last season and look at 15 – maybe even more than that.
“But maybe I’ll leave it to the strikers to get up to 20!”
