A customer services manager at a West Bromwich firm has been awarded more than £26,000 after a tribunal decided he had been unfairly selected for redundancy.

Following a three-day hearing at Birmingham Employment Tribunal, chair Mrs Ann Coaster believed someone else could have lost their job instead of Paul Munn at Glasstox Ltd in Pennington Road.

Mr Munn, of Bromsgrove, made compensation claims for unfair dismissal and breach of contract against the firm which deals in vehicle glass. He alleged the merit scoring system had been carried out unfairly.

He employed for £35,000 a year and had been able to get another job as a despatch operator for a much lower salary.

Mr Geoff Crute, representing the firm, claimed Mr Munn lost his job because of a redundancy situation following re-organisation.

Mr Crute said the firm had offered him another job, without response, and added that full consultation had taken place with him.

In closing, Mrs Coaster ruled the tribunal decision was that Mr Munn had been unfairly dismissed, because the merit marking had been inconsistent.

Mr Munn was awarded £26,147 for unfair dismissal but his claim for breach of contract was dismissed.
