The Wolverhampton-based company revealed a rise in profits of 92 per cent to nearly £52 million.

Business is booming in the Middle East, with the biggest Carillion project being the Marina Hotel in Abu Dhabi, which F1 Grand Prix cars will roar right through the middle.

The 500-room hotel complex incorporates a giant glass canopy, resembling the iconic Selfridges building at Birmingham’s Bullring, that spans the racetrack.

It is part of an ambitious £20billion marina development and accompanying Formula 1 raceway circuit, which is due to open on October 30  – just in time for the Adu Dhabi Grand Prix the following month.

The main feature of the project’s design is a 723ft expanse of steel adorned with 5,800 diamond-shaped glass panels. The complex also boasts an artificial beach with glass floating suites, the first floating hotel suite in the world.

The Carillion contract is valued at £250million.

Chief executive John McDonough said: “We are absolutely thrilled with the results. In the current climate they are exceptional.”
