Deeney close to new Walsall deal

WALSALL V SOUTHEND 3 TS 15Walsall striker Troy Deeney has revealed he is close to signing a new deal to keep him at the Banks’s Stadium.

The 21-year-old has been in talks with the club for almost two months, but is set to end speculation by penning a two-year contract next week.

Deeney’s deal expires at the end of the season and the club are desperate to tie him down. Now they look likely to secure his future.

He said: “We’ve been trying to sort a contract out at Walsall for seven weeks and hopefully everything will be sorted next week.

“It’s looking like it’s going to be done and dusted soon, it just needs a few tweaks.

“If it was between me and the gaffer it would have been done at the weekend he asked me, but agents want to get the best for me and the club want to get me as cheaply as possible.”

The parties have been negotiating in recent weeks and, while Deeney admitted the club’s first offer wasn’t good enough, the young forward believes they are close to reaching an agreement.

He said: “They did offer me one and we didn’t find it acceptable, but now they’ve offered another one and we’re trying to work towards that.

“It’s a case of negotiation and seeing where we come to. All I’ve said to my agent is you do your job and let me concentrate on mine. It’s a case of both parties giving a little bit.”

The hitman was last season’s joint 12-goal top scorer, when Wigan and Norwich both had him watched and Deeney reckons he owes it to his three-month old son Myles to get the best deal possible.

He said: “That’s the main thing, to make sure things are sorted for me and him. Then I can concentrate fully on football rather than thinking ‘if this isn’t going to happen now what’s going to happen next year?’

“I’m still 21, it’s my local team, I enjoying being here, the lads are a good laugh and I enjoy playing football.

“I don’t want to move to another club and sit on the bench for two years.”

    Fair play to the lad.

The club shouldn’t be held to ransom but should recignise the workrate and honesty this lad brings to the team…..an all too rare quality these days.

Let’s hope this is sorted soon and Troy can start banging in the goals to justify his new contract.

Deeney can score goals – but like all good strikers needs the crosses – last year they came from Zaboob in the main. This year he is playing wide again compared to Sam Parkin and we do not have a good crosser of the ball despite two “wingers”
Now Byfield has signed – smacks of desparation – hope Im wrong Chris despite poor goalscoring record recently and at 33 over the hill – his pace used to be a huge asset to him. So we now have three or four (Nicholls) strikers -but still no one in midfield or out wide who can deliver that essential cross or pass which all strikers need. How shortsighted that we let Zaboob go without a fight. I also hear that the Club paid a handsome signing on fee to Jabo but then only signed him for one year which enabled him to walk – what a failed policy.
As I say – hope Im wrong but the service has to be dramatically improved if we are to score goals from open play.
