Cox targets goal glut after first strike
Thursday 27th August 2009, 10:59AM BST.
Summer signing Simon Cox is targeting an Albion goal rush after opening his Baggies account at the Hawthorns.
The £1.5m forward bagged his side’s Carling Cup winner last night in the final minutes of extra-time to break his duck after a frustrating start to life at the club.
But the 23-year-old insists he will not be content with just one goal.
He said: “I’m not going to rest on that one goal. I am obviously going to try to kick on from here. Hopefully, if I can do that quickly enough, I can keep getting goals and put myself up on that goal chart.
“I could probably have scored a hatful in pre-season but they don’t mean anything. Goals like last night put us in the hat for the next round and if you score in the league it means points.
“I’m happy now I’m off the mark and hopefully more will come. It was good to get off and running and hopefully I can kick on.”
Cox has found himself on the substitutes’ bench for every Championship match with Luke Moore and teenager Chris Wood preferred in attack.
But the former Swindon man has vowed to stay patient.
He said: “As soon as I came in it was always going to be a fight to try to get a starting place for the Newcastle game.
“The manager told me early on that he wasn’t going to go with me and obviously I was disappointed, but I got on for a little bit of the game.”
