Brunt signs new Albion contract
Thursday 27th August 2009, 11:29AM BST.
Albion winger Chris Brunt has committed his future to the club by signing a new three-year contract.
The Northern Ireland international has effectively agreed a two-year extension to his current deal with the new package, including a further year’s option in the club’s favour.
Brunt’s current deal was due to run out in the summer of 2011, but if the Baggies activate their option he is now tied to the Hawthorns until 2013.
He said: “It’s nice to be rewarded for the progress I’ve made here and I’m delighted to have signed a new contract.
“I’ve enjoyed my time here. It’s been great for my career and I feel it’s been relatively successful.
“Winning the title was a terrific experience and although last season ended in relegation, on a personal level, I still enjoyed my first season in the Premier League.
“The fans have made me feel really welcome from day one, so I am looking forward to making further progress this season and hopefully getting back up.”
Brunt, currently sidelined by a calf injury, signed from Sheffield Wednesday two years ago for £3million and bagged the goals against Southampton and QPR that sealed promotion to the Premier League and helped clinch the Championship title.
The 24-year-old then enjoyed a successful second half of the top-flight season and ended as the eight-goal leading scorer.
Head coach Roberto Di Matteo said: “It’s always a big bonus when one of your core players commits his future to the club.
“Chris is a talented player who is definitely part of our long-term plans.”
Brunt sat out last night’s 4-3 Carling Cup victory over Rotherham, but striker Roman Bednar returned to action after his three-month drugs ban and received a warm welcome from the fans.
Borja Valero also made a rare start and his exit is currently no closer, despite reports in Spain claiming he is close to a return to Real Mallorca on loan.
The Express & Star understands there has still been minimal contact with the La Liga club.

Is this the first signs of the squad buying into what the new manager is trying to acheive?

This is excellent news but it raised another thought. Why have we only signed Youssef Mulumbu on a one year contract with another in the club’s favour, when it’s normally three and one? The way he’s playing it won’t be long before other clubs are sniffing round. Should we not be trying to extend this contract already? Can anyone throw any light on this?

Very heart warming win; nice to see that resilience is in our armoury this season also.
Chris brunt had loads to contribute last night, and I do pray he does not get ‘bagged’ by a premier outfit.
Its been a winning start in all things for the baggies so far, LONG may it continue..

A few weeks ago I was expecting CB to go in fact
he did intimate he was a life long Rangers fan
they probably took a look at him and didnt rate
him. Personaly he dosnt get involved enough games
pass him by. Has anyone seen him go by a defender ? maybe he should play inside no not in
the dressing room. Re last nights match I know there were a lot of changes but we might have
expected the fringe players to push their case
not so in fact any scouts watching would have
seen nothing. I hope Im wrong but Cox looks a bad buy and I expected more from Reid.
We must endeavour to get the sleepwalker Meite
Valero Barnett off the books asap. Bednar a month away from recall. However if we were due
a bad performance better last night.

He said he fancied a move to Rangers but had no interest from the premier league at all and lets face it he has not got the pace to play regularly at that level but will be good for us in the championship. Cox was poor last night and there are still a number of players not good enough in the squad. Big test this weekend.

If last nights line up consisted of our mainly second string players then god help us if we get many injuries this season. The defence was abysmal, like watching last season again.A win is a win i know that, but we won’t get away with it in the CCC battle. We need some experience in that damn defence,to cover the inevetable injuries we will pick up.

Nice to see you are looking at all the positives no8……

I think this is great news,to tie him down for three years which will bring him up to 27 should benefit both him and the club, and at least it will ward off anymore poaching of our players from Woy Hodgson and Fulham.

I am a CB fan big time. He can rival Beckham with his centring ability and look where that got Becks! Also he has a really decent shot on him and I’ve seen him slip past defenders regularly too. Get Morrison back, Thomas in full flow, we’ll have the wingers to rip teams apart. Cox is a poacher, pure and simple. If he develops like Johnny Nicholls did we shall all be happy. Johnny fed off Allen, Lee and Barlow, he knew where the net was, but the rest of his game wasn’t especially brilliant. Part of the jigsaw though that makes a team. They don’t all play alike, nor do they need to as long as they are good at what they do.

This is very good news! This is even better, we’re getting rid of Beattie at last. What a jerk, I simply hate that guy. He DID NOT belong to West Brom. He’s an absolute disgrace. Ciriooooo.

i was at the game last nite and i thought beattie played well scored 2 good goals and he never stopped running so your comment no 19 is a bit below the belt calling the bloke a jerk at the end of the day he plays for albion well did and no matter how bad they play we shud all still get behind them boing boing

I hope we don’t live to regret Craig Beattie leaving as we did with KP, especially if he scores against us with goals like that for Swansea.
It is my belief that the reason he was not very good for all you CB knockers was down to TOMO’s management and not Beattie’s skills.
You could not fault the cracking goals that he scored on Wednesday night, if he had stayed I think that under RDM he would have improved considerably and turned out to be a top scorer for the Albion.
C’mon you Baggies!!!!!!!!!!!!

good luck craig you deserve one last big pay day and another shot at the championship, thanks for all the memories god bless you and your family, aye boing boing they’ll be a welcome in the hillside

The knockers shoved Beattie out. He could not have failed to hear the howls of derision when he failed to trap a wild pass, twice, not once! Yet he scored two smashing goals and worked his whatsits off. He’ll love it in Swansea, Mumbles, Three Cliffs Bay, fresh air and a fresh start. Score one or two down there like he did Wednesday and they’ll be singing in Welsh Choir style. Good luck Craig, you never got a fair chance up here.

But how can you support such a Club like West Brom? Thats what he told me when I met him while on training camp in Malta! he was dead serious. How can I ever accept such an idiot to play in our famous blue and white?

Well come on then Alfred, spill the beans. Verbatim matey, or if not, word for word, Lol.
We need to know when our loyalty is misplaced.
There was recent manager whose name escapes me, probably didn’t deserve it either. Sir Terry, Jodie hasn’t dumped you, she’s just getting a bit of experience with me so she’ll be up to your standards for a lovely lady.
