Boss praise for Bednar after return
Thursday 27th August 2009, 11:06AM BST.
Albion boss Roberto Di Matteo praised striker Roman Bednar after the Czech star made his long-await return from a drugs ban.
The 25-year-old played for more than an hour in his first appearance for more than three months and the head coach was pleased with his forward’s contribution.
Di Matteo said: “I think Roman did well. He has been out for a while, so it was a good game for him to start and get his match fitness back. I think he will get better with every game now.
“He is part of our plans.”
Summer signing Simon Cox snatched the late winner for the Baggies to avoid a penalty shoot-out.
Di Matteo is hoping the former Swindon striker’s first Baggies goal will prove to be a shot in the arm.
He said: “Strikers need goals to boost their confidence, so we hope that it will be the first of many to come from him.
“It is a long season so we will be patient and hope to see more goals.”
The head coach was impressed with the battling qualities of his side, after they went 3-2 behind in extra time.
He said: “It is always interesting to see your team play. A lot of stuff I liked and some I didn’t, as we conceded some sloppy goals.
“But on the other hand we showed good character and reaction and we kept going.
“Physically we were very strong in extra time and we kept going to the last minute. There was a sense of enjoyment at the end, rather than relief.
“We wanted to get through to the next round. Unfortunately we couldn’t do it within 90 minutes, so we had to go to extra-time. We are pleased we won eventually.
“We knew it was going to be a difficult game. Rotherham are in good form and have started the season really well.
“They play some good football as well and if you’re not on top of your own form life is difficult. The players that played are not fringe players. They are part of a group trying to achieve something and it’s always interesting to see them play in a competitive game.
“It was interesting. There were a few players I was very pleased with.”

I ama great Bednar fan and I can see Roberto likes to encourage his players, but last night I thought Roman was way off colour. He tried hard enough but the timing was all shot to bits. The defence we used was a reminder of why we are playing in The Championship this season, awful!! The midfield was frequently overrun by what is, in all honesty, a very good 4th Division side. Beatties got two crackers but did the fans warm to him? Hmmm. Once a Black Country man has a ‘down’ on someone, he’s very unforgiving. All-in-all, a bit jammy and thank Heaven Kiely made that super save in extra-extra-extra time.

I dont think Roman Bednar is anywhere near ready
for the first 11 yet,RDM should give young
Lateef Elford-Alliyu a game or two, cant be no
worse than Cox or Beattie.
possible albion 11 for Sheff Utd:
Carson , Cummings , Meite , Olsson , Mattock ,
Martis , Dorrans , Mulumbu , Cech , Moore ,
Elford-Alliyu .

Give him time as he is proven at this level, the amount of competition we have up front will keep all the stikers on their toes and give us another few games and we’ll be flying.Once we have got all the injured players back no 1 will b able to touch us.IN ROBERTO WE TRUST!!!!!!!!!!

Big mistake sending Beattie packing I think. The guy has some great goals in him and will really do well in this league. A mixture of strikers/forwards is vital here and I am saddened to see him leave. Bednar had better step it up – and fast.

thought there was only Dorrans who came out the game with any credit. i dont know how a lot of people on here said that Cech was a good player and better than robinson !! the player is rubbish !!

I also think Beattie will come good. He never got many chances to show and the fans got on his back too. He’s done well when out on loan. Colin rated him at Palace and whatever we think of Colin, he knows how to make ‘em play. Cech isn’t a BAD player. Nor is Meite. They both think they are too good for us! Barnett’s confidence seems shot to bits and as a pair they just didn’t gel. Barnett is still young and with an experienced man alongside, talking non-stop, he could improve greatly, but not with Meite.
