Striker boost for McCarthy

Wolves are in line for a double striker boost ahead of Saturday’s key visit of Hull.
Record signing Kevin Doyle is inching towards his first Premier League start for Wolves in Saturday’s Molineux clash, while fellow front-man Sylvan Ebank-Blake is also in the frame for a return.
Record £6.5m signing Doyle, whose campaign was abruptly halted by a hernia problem, completed his longest stint so far on the pitch after getting an hour’s action under his belt in last night’s Carling Cup tie against Swindon.
Everything now will depend on Doyle’s reaction in training for the remainder of the week but with Ebanks-Blake set to also be available this weekend, manager Mick McCarthy is getting closer to being able to work with his ‘dream team’ attacking spearhead.
Ebanks-Blake has not played in the last three matches because of a hamstring problem and McCarthy is stressing that he has not yet returned to full-time training.
“I would think Sylvan could be available on Saturday – I wouldn’t want to put it any stronger than that,” said the Wolves boss after watching his shadow squad drag the club into a rare Carling Cup third round spot via 120 goalless minutes and a penalty shoot-out.
“There is no way Kevin is going to be 100 per cent at the moment because that only comes with games and more games. But is there a chance he could start on Saturday? Yes, there’s a chance.
“Everything now will depend on how he goes in the next few days.”
But other changes may be in the air too as both Greg Halford and Stephen Ward are still recovering from injuries sustained against Manchester City. One of these could be George Elokobi starting.
While Wolves were clawing their way past Swindon, Doyle’s former club were being KO’d by Barnsley amid continuing speculation that midfielder James Harper will be at Molineux before next week’s transfer deadline passes.
Reading manager Bren-dan Rodgers was asked about the 28-year-old midfielder after the match – a £2m deal has been agreed but not activated – and said he “expected to hear something before next week.”
